I'm looking for the name of a particular name and many google searches later I've got nothing. It was notorious for the fact that after you died a few times you had to buy a new cartridge because the "princess" of the game actually died forever. I believe it was based in a submarine and was from the 80's.

Nope, but I remember an NES game with a submarine that would stop you halfway through the plot and demand a code from the back of the book. If you didn't have that - get anudder.
The one time I actually called a gaming/cheatcode hotline was to get that damned code. Cost me like 3$.
