The announcement made earlier today of the new agreement between CCP and Nexon to bring EVE Online to Japan has created quite a stir in the MMO journalist pool. MMORPG.com's Garrett Fuller has a few thoughts about the announcement and the potential for even more coming from the two gaming giants. Read on!
The news broke today about CCP and Nexon teaming up to bring EVE Online to Japan’s marketplace. It is something that has been a long time in the making and these two powerhouse MMO studios working together could usher in a change of global partnerships for the industry. With CCP centralized in Iceland and working primarily with the North American and European markets, it only make sense that they would partner with a major Asian company to bring EVE to the East. Working with Nexon the partnership creates the perfect platform for players.

Fukushima, now NeX. Ouch. NeXon?
Appropriate. o_O
Yep, because the asian markets enjoy item shops.. No matter how expensive and rediculous the prices..
Thats where the money is, in the MMO industry..
That's a very good point. Asian markets love 'dem cash shops. Great timing with the NeX, CCP. Genius, in fact.
If this is on the same server, this could be more bad than good. IMO EVE should have 2 servers, one for east one for west. That way they can milk the eastern market with the F2P cash shop bullshit they love, and keep our players content. :P

Always hating on instances in MMOs! Open worlds, open PvP, territory control and housing please. More persistence, more fun.
"EVE's design and quality have always been the best"
Yeah right.
"Everyone likes Nexon"
Uh-huh.
Why is there no link to the original press release, by the way?

We share a server called Earth, why not share a server in EVE too. I like the idea of japanese tourists onboard a space station someday.
Nexon Dont have the balls to support eve! That's my opinion!
How do you say monocle in Japanese?
Hmm, didn't EVE once open in Japan ? Can't quite remember what happened. So this is a re-launch ?
A depressing day for game players with ethics
I always thaught CCP was for gamers and not ruled by the almighty doller, how wrong can i be
Nexon = poor customer service, only in it for the money
I have no pre existing thaughts on nexon that they are not for gamers, i know they are not, but CCP jumping into bed with them?
IT'S A SAD SAD DAY
Where r the publishers by gamers, for gamers?
This article is misleading, Japan isnt getting its own server they'll be playing on tranquility.

Localized services for Japanese players will enable them to access the game in their native language through the Tranquility server, which currently plays host to over 350,000 subscribers from around the world in three languages: English, German and Russian.
"We are pleased to have this opportunity to be a part of CCP's ongoing plans to provide premium services to their subscribers," said Seung-Woo Choi, Nexon Co., Ltd. "Our shared commitment to quality and excellence is the ultimate cornerstone from which to build an even greater gaming experience for Japanese video game enthusiasts."
While CCP will continue to develop and manage the game, EVE Online will be added to the ever-expanding portfolio of titles available through Nexon's portal site, utilizing Nexon's billing system and supported by the company's expertise in the areas of regional marketing and promotion.

Great news for CCP! I do hope they bring the Japanese players to Tranquility, that will be awesome. The Chinese were put on their own server for reason. Maybe there were just to many of them for Tranquility to support?
I think it has more to do with political censorship in China. The Chinese government didn't want their citizens fraternizing with all us evil Capitalists. I think you'll find it was the only way to bring EVE to China officially.

Regarding EVE China, yes censorship is a part of it, but a small one. The big thing is that businesses, especially internet services, have to be operated by Chinese and must fall under government regulation. Even Google's operation in China was a subsidiary.
Technically, there is very little stopping westerners from playing on the Chinese EVE server - in fact there are over 500 players from TQ setting up base on there right now. The game's operators are at a loss what to do with them since there is little in the regulation about foreigners. For the time being it is increasing interest in the player base so they get optimistically ignored.
The Chinese EVE server (Serenity) has 8k-10k max population - they could all join TQ if they wanted to without major issues.
I'm looking forward to seeing another culture driven group come into the game as we've seen with the French, German, and Russian players already. Things will get interesting.
Stop fear mongering. The only way this affects you is that you will be playing with new people from a different part of the world. That's it.
lol. I don't think you have ever played a single nexon game. I think they do have a sorf of uniqueness to them there is no way that the company has great customer service and their products are junk. You can head to any maplestory fansite and read about the game having rampant exploits every 1 - 2 months.
Good thing this is still a CCP game, and not a Nexon game.
This is nothing new really.... I live in Japan and have many Japanese friends and had been playing for about 6 years, until I just recently quit. The Japanese players have made their own Wiki Site with everything translated perfectly even with how to work around the bugs that exist. http://wikiwiki.jp/eveonlinejp/
The only thing this looks like is that Nexus will keep the translations up to date on the client. On the test servers, Japanese has been an option for many years. The translation was not perfect, but not too bad. The only thing is that they are turning on the option really it seems. So, I take it Nexus will sell DUST 514, advertise for Eve Online, and keep the translation and support for both games up.
Really a lot of news here, other than they support Japanese officially now. Did I miss something?
Bad move to put Japanese gamers in a separate universe. Put them in a universe that's theoretically the same but very distant, but over time let each side encounter each other, and treat the other like an invading alien race that can't be communicated or negotiated with.
And how about the war of lag? eve hardly manage 700 player's battle in same system! if the half of the are connected from asia and the other half from euro and america? Ppl will start to whine about lag!
Japanese players will mostly be in a very different timezone to the EU and US players. Even assuming that we see a huge influx of Japanese players into EVE, which I doubt, there's no reason to worry about lag.
Indeed, the timezone factor will make Japanese TZ PvP corps a valuable and sought-after resource for 0.0 corps. It's also good news for the Australians, as they'll have more people online to play with and against.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
That is so the Chinese government can stamp out anything they don't approve of very quickly. It has EVERYTHING to do with censorship.

I don't think it will do well in Japan. Not because EVE is a bad game, but because the Japanese tend to be insular with what games and companies they support. They only really play Japanese games made by Japanese companies. If it was Square Enix porting EVE to Japan, then it would have a chance. Nexon ian't even a Japanese company, it's a Korean company.
This is a good idea, but I'm not certain it'll work just because of the Japanese mindset.
Correction... Nexon is an Korean company that doesn't like Europeans playing their games... (Vindictus)
