I was wondering if you guys can suggest an MMO for me. I am new to the genre.
I played WoW for a bit then got bored. I am currently playing Rift and think the PvP is bad and am not ready to repeat motions in another gear grind.
I am looking for a game that is very competitive in the PvP. I looking into League of Legends and it has the level on compete I want in terms of leagues, but doesn't have the character personalization that I enjoy in an MMO. I am looking for an open world PvP game that has very competitive PvP leagues or BGs. I want to pick my gear and weapons and have some level of gear hunt, but I don't want that to be the whole point of the game.
Any suggestions?

Age of Conan Unchained is decent, its FFA style of play allows for tons of open world pvp and they have PvP lvls where you can only get pvp gear based on your pvp lvls. They have Minigames (like wows battlegrounds), and they have an open world PvP area that groups try to control. Also they have PvP seiges that you can join if your in a guild or be hired as a mercenary to help one guild, basicly 1 guild sets up a seige to take over the other guilds castle. Its overall a pretty fun game was bad at launch but now they re-launced it as a F2P so you dont have to pay anything there are a few restrictions, but not a lot of them matter as you are lvling up.
The only problem with AoC is that it doesnt have any sort of pvp ladder so its not an esport and cant really be played on a tournament lvl of compition, but its still a fun game over all.
League of Legends is a great game I like it because I can play it in between things because the games are so short and I can play it competitvly with their ranked system. But I cant play it for hours on end like MMOs
truth be told it's hard to beat AoC as a F2P. it's just an awesome game. however, know that you will never be competitive in AoC pvp unless you get the premium subscription.
wait for GW2
IMHO your problem is that you are looking for 2 things which are mutually exclusive. Openworld PvP and Instanced E-Sport PvP do not mix well. The first requires a thriving population in the world while the last one sucks people in queues for instanced events.
The only game that I have experienced which successfully combined the two was Dark Age of Camelot, but that is because the battlegrounds were persistent, meaning there was no timer or score. Also they were inferior to the Openworld PvP which revolved around territorial conquest and capture of relics from other realms which would give your entire realm bonuses.
From your description however, DAoC may not be what you are looking for as it certainly doesn't feature "league" PvP.

I don't mind paying a subscription I just want a competitive PvP environment with a nicely customizeable character. I will try AoC.
Do you think GW2 will have a gear grind? Do you think the PvP will take skill?
Gear grind, could be. But they said they will have servers with max lvl characterfor their arena type of PvP which they are targeting for esports.
I kinda wanna play AOC, but don't really see a point to pay subscription when my most playing time is spent in starcraft 2. How bad is it for pvpers in AOC who doesn't pay subscription, is it worth it ?
I agree with what was said good and bad about AoC. I would also recommend Darkfall.
It is not everyone's cup of tea since you can loot people's gear etc. when you beat them. It is also not the most popular game in part because of this. It is also a grind, not a gear grind, but a long skill grind and many of the maxed out vets just AFK'd their way there.
However, the PvP does take skill and it has an open power system that is fun (even if the lack of skill cap, makes it less diverse ultimately). The world is well designed, and if you can't find any PvP the PvE is actually some of the best.
Don't believe the people that say you can quickly compete with vets. But also don't believe those that say there is nothing you can do about getting ganked by vets. The truth is somewhere in between. I for one got stupidly rich my first week by just organizing 4 or 5 noobs to go hunting for "people in shiny armors, bark bark." We didn't win all the time, but we had so much freedom since we had nothing much to loose and the loot we got from the vets we were able to beat was pretty ridiculous for our skill levels.
The community is strange. It definitely attracts a certain basement dwelling bunnyhopping exploitaholic crowd, but it also attracts an old school crowd that likes real immersion and skill.

They will be no gear grind in GW2 to pvp, since the toon are leveled up (gear and levels) when you enter pvp zones, so there is no grind needed to pvp, it also offer both arena type and open world maps. Gw, the first one, is renowed to have one of the best pvp skill wise, just hope they will reach the same quality for GW2.
Never tryed AoC, good luck with it.
edit: I don't recommand Darkfall because they will relaunch the game in few month and nobody is sure if you will grind for nothing or not, the game is heavy on grind too, you won't be able to pvp on a competitive level before few months.
Guild Wars sounds exactly like that except for the open world pvp, which it has none of. It does have extremely high character customization and competitive leagues. The gear hunt is optional; stat-wise the really rare gear isn't any different than normal gear but it's something you can get to show off. And if you're interested in GW2 you can unlock titles and gear for that game by playing GW.
