I've been waiting to get some information on Planetside 2 ever since Smedley posted a twitter saying that his next message would relate to "Planetside". He then said, "You will like".
This left everyone on the Planetside forums speculating as to what it could be. After all, Planetside really hadn't gotten any attention at all from SOE managemet for YEARS. So then the next post he said that he was excited to unofficially announce a project called "Planetside NEXT". At the time, it was planned to be a graphical update to the original Planetside, but that wasn't known.
Now it's been a year or so since those tweets, and images of vehicles/troops have slowly started to surfance. Then just a couple days ago, the official trailer and website launched. That's a brief recap of what has happened so far. Now I was watching a recent pannel interview, they were talking about BFR's, and how they won't go down that path again.
They also mentioned releasing a 3 year plan before launch, in order to garner community feedback and craft the future plan to suit the community better. It really seems to me so far that SOE understands the mistakes they have made in community relations, and are striving to fix this with the newly revitalized Planetside IP.
I do believe the original Planetside was a very good mmofps, and was ahead of it's time during a period where it garnered less success than it could have if it released later. Yet to this date, I have not seen anything like it in the mmofps community. I wouldn't consider anything else out a true mmofps as they pretty much all go by lobbies, with battles under 64 players.
Anyways, my main point of discussion, while reflecting on SOE's history is the poll below.
Comments
None of the above...
I think it will be a large success and then more than likely drop to moderate numbers. The original was a classic and I think that not only is the genre screaming out for a massive scale mmofps, but the genre will actually pull in that direction over the coming years.
But with SOE in charge you can be fairly sure that whatever can possibly go wrong, will. Which kind of tempers my enthusiasm for it.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Yea you gotta be concerned when sony is calling the shots, i feel like they're trying to make it to much like BF/COD clone, just with thousands of people, i really liked how uniqe the original was in terms of combat.

Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.
If it's p2p 100k-300k subs as with the old PS people didn't like to pay for a fps then the skill based bit will lose a lot of people ( good thing )
If it is f2p and is as large or even bigger then PS is now i can see it being a big hit BUT knowing $oe they do this it will ruin the game some how with their greed.
Now that i think about it 100k subs maybe pushing it i don't recall what PS was at in its prime but it is a fps after all. Maybe if they pull off a good game with so many people sick of the endless themepark mmo's it will pull a lot of people in making it a hit. I'd bet on one thing a large group of the old PS players will come back even if it is to just try it.
I'm excited to be honest, although I've never played the first game, in fact I haven't played any SOE game at all so take that as you will^^ I just liked what I saw from that short trailer and the fact that it all seems to happen in a large scale and in a setting that is not overused like the endless modern military manshoots. On the other hand I've heard nothing but bad things about SOE, I guess there is a first time for everything
Head over to youtube and type in planetside (;
-Here is a taste of it. View distance is sort of low though.

Mostly air, but htere are HUGE land battles and base raids in the first one.
For land, for power, forever!
I was a Vet of the original planetside from launch, played for I believe about 2 years, left then came back a few years later for another year or so.
The problem as I see it is that they have said they aim to update it to be more in line with modern shooters. Do you know what that means? 2-3 shot kills with most weapons, fast paced combat. Say goodbye to the old planetside and say Hello to PlanetCoD.
What I loved about Planetside was the ability to think about the combat, it wasnt just peak out your head and BAM HEADSHOT your gone. I also feel they are taking out the heart of the game with "squad spawning" and having specific squad leader certifications. What is the point of an AMS if you can just have your squadmates spawn on you near the entrance to the base. Remember how crucial it was to hunt down and destroy an AMS and how it could single handedly turn the tide of battle?
They also said they are adding a permanent base for each faction on each continent. Half of the fun was defending your home conts (which I know dissapeared with AS) but there will be no pride in defending your home cont, and the satisfaction of locking an opponents.
I may be a little overly pessimistic here, but im afraid we are going to get Call of Planetside, not Planetside 2
Some was gathered from summaries posted here on MMORPG. The stuff about the removal of Home conts and permanent bases I read here:

Although I did just read the clarifiaction of squad spawning saying it would be on a cooldown and not at all a primary method of spawning, so that does make me feel a bit better.
As far as the 2-3 shot kill/headshot issue. In several places they have mentioned they want to put PS2 in line with modern FPS games, and most modern FPS games feature 2-3 shot kills and one shot headshots that can easily be accidentally pulled off even with random fire.
Hopefully though, the final product will pull it all together and make a successful Planetside 2.
I can't give my opinion or else the moderators here will give me an infraction (watch me get one anyway), but I do hope to God it does well. If it's anything like the first one but a little more modernized then it might be my next new source of entertainment.
Hmm a modern fps can mean a lot of things i think but i do agree i hate the 2-3 kill bit most have. Snipers however i always hated not having a head shot
Not even being in beta yet i'd say its to soon to worry about anything it will all change in some way or form in the end
Ugh, Call of Planetside would suck.
I liked being hit a few times, finding cover, healing up, then poking head up again to shoot, getting hit a few times, finding cover, healing up. That provided static gunfights, where in Call of Duty people run around like meth addicts and knife each other.
Counterstrike, and the Battlefield franchise does the same thing. If we are to reference faster death, then I'd sooner associate the gameplay to the likes of Battlefield 3, but vaster.
If planetside 2 is a well made COD clone thats an open world with thousands of players.. COUNT ME IN!
Remember Old School Ultima Online
It won't work. Vehicles are overpowered in these FPS.
No more AMS? Permanent base for each faction on the continents? Well that sucks. As you said, having to actually hotdrop from homebase into a continent was one of the coolest things about PS. Having to go and find the snicky little bastage and his AMS and take it out was another. Proper use of AMS could make our break taking a base.
I don't play them so not sure how you mean OP but if you get shot in the face by a tank and live something is wrong there.
It means vehicles are overpowered, tempting everyone to hang out in the area where the vehicles spawn. (battlefield 2)
Ooooh ok yeah they did that in PS a lot to its what i liked to call OS bait lol
its not 3rd person its a mmo with skills... no OP from vehicles...

Ironically after reading the title of this thread the first question that came to mind was, how concerned would people be if it wasn't SOE who was releasing this game? The scecond question was how much does NGE have to do with that concern?
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
No. In Planetside half the infantry didn't hang around the vehicle spawn waiting for 1 overpowered tank to spawn, and shoot each other when another hopped in.
...and there's nothing lol about OS, CUD abilities destroyed the game.
Sadly even here at 2011, i still feel like planetside is ahead of its time. WoW has Raped and pillaged the minds of our youth for so long, a game with this level of complexity would surpass there abiliys to understand.
On the other hand i feel that they might develop a better planetside this time around... It seems like they have learned from there mistakes, but this is SOE probably the biggest failure of a gaming company out there. If this game was developed by another company i would be happy to say it would be a huge sucess.
Did you start player later on in the games life? as when i was playing seeing 15-30 standing there was the norm. Been shot at to when some randon person jumps in a squad mates veh and boots him.
OS were a joke they only killed the stupid so no it didn't have anything to do with PS downfall. BFR's in a way did only as to many people were to lazy to learn how easy they were to kill or just not willing to work as a team.
Do you guys really think that vehicle balancing or people waiting at the vehicle terminals was a problem in PS1? I played both when it was first released and occassionally after that and I didn't hear much complaining. There has always been some things overbalanced, but in general vehicles were not.
In fact, I liked how in PS1 there was a sort of 'primary fight' and secondary fight. So if you were in a tank, there were fights going on all around you, but enemy foot soldiers were only easy to kill if they were exposed. The smart ones saw you and used trees, etc for cover. If you were air, you couldnt take down foot soldiers very easily because you would have to stop too long to do it and anti aircraft would take you down. If you were a sniper, you were primarily concerned with enemy snipers, and if you focused too much on trying to kill enemy soldiers it was not only very difficult because if they were good they would hide or dodge you, but the enemy snipers would take you out if you did not attend to them first.
So although you are in a massive battle, only about 25% of your enemies are really a threat to you, and they are your primary concern. Depending on your role, the enemies that are a threat may or may not be the enemies you are targetting to kill. It added a lot of depth to the gameplay and allowed the battles to be massive without making them overwhelming or overly confusing. I could see people fighting everywhere, but I didn't have to 'worry' about all of them.

AMS are still in.
You have permanemt base on each continent ie- Continental sanc. It's the same thing really, minus load screen and wait times. Waiting 10 then 5 minutes to arbitrarily drop into another planet/continent was not what I personally considered one of the coolest aspects, and continental sancs were actually removed based on player dislike of it.
You can still hotdrop into action.
