So, yeah, this forum base is always complaining about the lack of a new fantasy sandbox when it's sitting right in front of them in the form of a FREE open beta. Why not go give it a try?

I had a look at it two weeks ago or so.
It's incredibly ugly. Usually not a big turnoff but erm. Graphics-wise its in the mid 90s. I only got to see the starter area though because...
It's empty. I walked around for a while and found absolutely nothing. I climbed up a boring hill without trees, saw that there was nothing on the other side and made my way back to the starter town. In the meanwhile I checked the help function that people told me to use because they weren't willing to answer real noob questions about the state of the game and the gameplay.
There I found that my favourite skill, thievery, hadn't been implemented yet. I looked at a few other skills that caught my interest, I forgot which, but those had not been implemented yet either.
So I went to the town center and tried to talk to people. Everyone was silent. The only guy who was there was the lead developer who had nothing better to do than spawn .. zombies? skeletons? en mass in town and talk to me.
Then I attacked a guard I think? Then I logged out. Didn't look much like a game to me at all in the current state. That's why I'm not playing Dawntide.
DISCLAIMER: Didn't mean to insult the game. Only stating my first impressions of it which were in fact pretty bad.
You need to tweak your .ini file in order to get decent graphics, to be fair. And, yeah, the starting area is only really good for early gathering / crafting. It's not even really any good for combat. You need to join a guild, get to your guild city and start off there, really.

Me and a Friend are Bad At Games
I have, and do play! I mean it's not my main game at the moment.. (it was until my backpack with all my good stuff and around 2k gold vanished) But I still play here and there.. Cant wait to see it flesh out a little more, and maybe the graphics get a little smoother.. (Ive got a very nice gaming rig, only 8 months old, yet it gives me bad stutters and random low fps. I believe it has to do with my graphics card more then my computer Ive read they are having trouble with some nvidia cards)
Anywho... great game, gives me that ultima online feeling.. have HIGH hopes for it ( higher then I had for Xyson thats for sure... lets hope I dont jinx this one :)
Don't normally do sandbox games but every now and then i give one a chance, seeing as this one is in open beta, nothing to lose...unless it kills my computer (gawd i hope it doesn't)
I'll let you know in an update what i think of the game
Keep in mind i'm not much of a sandbox person so the hook part might be a problem for me. I'll try and get past it though
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Hm.. well I'm not the type of person who just randomly joins a guild for gameplay advantages. And I don't think that any guild which recruits random strangers is worth joining.
And since I don't know if joining a guild city would be worth it or not, I won't put any effort into getting to one. I guess this is a downwards spiral for beginners.
I hope my impressions of it will be proven wrong though because the concept of the game looks promising.
Yea that sounds like a bad experience.. I dont know when you played, but Im assuming before the last major patch, but there are always people when I play. I see them in the mountains.. all over the farmlands.. And for sure I see more in the wild then in town.. Plenty of helpful people. Maybe you were expecting far too much from an indie early beta game.. dont know..
As far as the graphics yeah they are older.. But I would trade the best graphics of the generation for real sandbox content, and good people. I hope you try it again one day.. and hope your experience is better that time..
Yea, if you wont join guilds for survival purposes and advantages, arent willing to meet new people, and dont want the effort of traveling , maybe you shouldnt give it a second go :P
I think your combining WoW type guilds with DTs city-style factions.. not the same concept or goals
I want to play a AAA sandbox game (heck I"ll take single A) while Dawntide seems like a B- or C+ at this point.

Yeah I would love a AAA sandbox game. So you send me a PM when someone publishes one, and maybe Ill get it while Im busy playing DT, and other obviously inferior titles lol
ER, its called EVE, been out a few years, maybe you've heard about it? It's where I hang my hat for the moment.

I am willing to meet new people. That's one of the best part of online games. :P
I just won't join a guild for the sake of joining one. That is WoW-style. If a sandbox mmo can't entertain me when I'm on my own, it is disrespecting its smallest social and economical unit. I like to meet new people while I'm playing, in a person-to-person setting. A conversation that starts with "hi", not "looking for group for kara". I join guilds to work together with people who I know and like for a common goal. For this purpose, I have to know them before I join them.
(Actually it is more common that I create a new guild with people who I already knew / met on the way but meh.)
I also don't mind travelling. But why would I log into Dawntide, try to find a guild (I won't have a clue if the guild will be good or not anyway - probably not, considering they enlist random NOOBS!!!), travel to their place just to find out IF that was worth it. Why would anyone do that? (Apparently, not as many people have an answer to this question, right? Hence this topic exists.)
Don't know if there where a lot of changes, but the last time I played it was a bugfest all over again....

i downloaded it 3 weeks ago or so and tried it for 20 mins.
I didnt had any probs with crashes or visuals. I found the areas nice. Some hills on the horizon, mountains, opes steppes like,i said to my self good to go. After 20 mins of running in the wilds i found a boar. Ok combat time.
I cliked to attack the boar .After 3 secs the command i gave reached finally my avatar's brain. With a way too ugly and clunky animation he performed an attack to the boar. the boar fighted back after 2-3 secs. Very poor work in combat, coding? who knows. What i do know the combat system in this game like in pre pre pre pre pre alpha stage.Makes shadowbane look like skyrim or something.
Anwy for me combat is a-z for any rpg .If they somehpw finish the programming work in combat i ll give it a shot cause the world design was nice.Graficks and deails of the wilds were nice. In 20 mins of running i met a forest, hills, a river and a nice waterfall,.It was great to the eye had the impression im really there. At least the speecific areas i visited.
I tried it but my female character was so ugly. Really. The rest is fine.
Uh anyway, so since I didn't get to find that out when I played Dawntide, what's in it? Housing, obviously, and guilds? Even though combat doesn't seem advanced, is there a war system and/or territorial control? And uh, what do most players usually spend their time on in Dawntide?
Currently none of that is in yet, at least to my knowledge. I was going to try DT, but I don't have the time atm. From what I know its in very early open beta, so they stil have a long ways to go.

I've been thinking about trying it but haven't had a lot of time lately.
But---I have to say I feel more or less the same way Redrocket feels about guilds. I don't like joining random guilds just for the sake of being in a guild. And truthfully I really hate it when the design of a game basically requires me to join a guild. Nothing good can ever come of a game design that makes people feel like they HAVE to be in a guild. All that does is force people together who really shouldn't be together which leads to bickering and drama. It gives guild leaders far too much power over other players which tends to bring out the inner jerk in most of them.
Yeah, I don't ever want to feel like I'm screwed if I'm not in a guild. If I join a guild I want it to be because I've met and liked some of the people, not because I feel like I have to. When I'm in a guild I want it to feel as much as possible like a group of friends who are equals and are free to come and go as they please. I definately don't want it to feel like I'm a lowly peasant who has to take shit from my master just so I can play the damn game.
Honestly, that advice you gave to Redrocket where you basically told him to join a guild if he wants to play has almost convinced me not to try it.
Not only that it gives guild leaders too much power, but most of the good guilds will not accept newcomers because they will have fear of the same issue, the person being a jerk. Only once did I ever ask in world chat if there was a good guild for me to join, and I ended up meeting a freind of mine from another MMO in the process, subsequently joining his guild.

I have already tried it and un installed it too. I don't mind ugly graphics but there is also this thing called art style. Dawntide world is bland and boring. I tried my best for two days but it put me to sleep.

I couldnt figure out how to make money with my mage/alchemist character, like not being able to sell the gathered foliage i had collected over the course of a half-hour, to a vendor. And I couldnt find the alchemy spot to brew a potion at, I recall. On top of that, animations still need tweaking.
Their website is really nice, but it's decieving when you actually go into the game and have no idea what the hell is going on.
Actually you just made me realize why no company will ever make a good sandbox game. Because tutorials usually introduce you to the story, whereas a sandbox has no story. Perhaps if the fixed this problem somehow. Why not give something called a guidestone or whatever that you can ask questions to so you can figure stuff out in the begining.

And the mob aggro. There's that graveyard just outside the newb starter town. As I was getting accustom to and learning through trial and error the combat mechanics, I had to run away from a skeleton. . .it chased me for the longest run I can remember in an mmo back to the starter town where the guards had to interceed; the longest aggro I remember experienceing in 15 years of mmo playing.
Get a gun..blow my brains out...or...play dawntide??
hummm hard to choose...ok ill get the gun
Well I am about to try it, but I am probably going to hate it.
