It is time to fight back and save what we love!

I have started a steam based group with the intent of boycotting SWTOR because it is obvious that the reason SWG is being shut down is to divert players into that game to make more money. If sony and Lucas arts will not listen to petitions then we as dedicated players of SWG must not allow our voices to be heard and must spring to action in the hope of rescueing something we love. We have a few months to rally enough support for this boycott so spread the word quickly.

Since SWG is going to shut down, killing all those Ewoks in data genocide,  a boycott of Star Wars: The Old Republic may be effective.. I'm up for it anyway, the TOR vaporware hype is just too too too too much now. Mommy!

You are massively overestimating the numbers of swg and therefore those that will have the effect you desire.  The main players of Swtor will come from wow, mmorpg fans, star wars fans and bioware fans.  This group and what you are trying to do is about as useful as putting a bucket on your head saying "Im not a part of this world".  Have you seen the guild forum on swtor official boards? Its swarming like a bee convention high on honey.

I am sympathetic that your game is being shut down, you need to realise though that because SWG isn't a massive success currently with healthy subscribers and turning decent profit numbers its a major major reason for termination.  Is that SOE's fault? I certainly haven't seen much marketing over the years.

SOE didnt have the foresight to sign a longer contract for rights to the IP.

Note: Im not even sure I will buy swtor myself, I will wait to see if the game is good and fleshed out at launch.

boycotting SW:TOR for the sake of SWG would not only be pointless.. it would be a complete waste of time.. it really is time to move on.image

    This!

It's just a game - get over it already.

Punishing BioWare OR Lucas Arts for what SOE does, doesn't solve anything. Smedley is responsible for not renewing the license - he has publicly admitted it was a MUTUAL decission - he was not forced into anything.

I don't think there's a chance in hell Smedley would accept ANY blame if it could be avoided, do you?! (OP, not you Phry)

It's been such a looong time but if i remember right, SOE was supposed to do TOR and got realy ticked off when when Lucas arts handed the project to Bioware. This being the case, just enjoy whats left of SWG, there is little time left with the game and spending it on trying to boycott a new game that SOE has no control over will be regretfull for you.

I mean if a hater gonna hate he should be more precise in the direction of his anger. Besides, TOR will launch and sell a ton of copies anyway.

But hey, fight the good fight I suppose (shrug).

The game I loved died a long time ago.  I can't help but look back at when we tried to save SWG from the NGE, begging and pleading for them not to do it.  We all know how this went.  Now, the very few (as opposed to the majority of players back before the NGE) saps who actually stuck around with the downward spiral are finally seeing the end coming up.  I'm sure there are many people who still love the game, but it's garbage.  The combat is wonky, stuff runs like on crack shooting through walls, the targetting system is atrocious, the speed messes with the actual server (having all the actions going to servers from clients at a rate the engine wasn't really built for).

As for the people saying they are going to boycott LA and Bioware, that's just really dumb.  There's no real reasoning for it except foolish spite.  LA isn't the only one to blame for the decision that was made, SOE isn't innocent at all (especially John Smedley).  I've moved on and plan on really enjoying Star Wars again with TOR.  The question I pose is, why can't these few people who have been bamboozled for the longest come to terms and accept that this is going to happen?  I'm sure even though TOR isn't going to be another SWG, the game is going to be fun and immersive enough to entertain them.

Well, I like that you want to "do something" over whining and complaining but I don't see your efforts bearing any fruit.

The people who want to play SWToR are going to play it. You getting all the SWToR hating players not to play isn't going to do much because they probably wouldn't have played anyways.

You might convince some fence sitters but I really don't see that as being a huge group of people.

If anything, you should be doing the opposite (sort of). You should be showing Lucas Arts and Sony that there are a huge amount of players who want to play SWG precisely because it's a different type of star wars game.

Might not really work but it would be more productive than getting players who hate the game to just continue to hate the game.

    Okay, okay, okay, okay....

SWG has been dead for years.  I loved the game like many other pre-NGE when it ruled.  As a sandbox it is still a good game, I just can't play it because I played what it once was.

It is childish and overly ambitious to try to "boycott" TOR.  How are you going to pull people into your group who have never played SWG or been on a MMO forum?  What about all the players outside of this website alone, who are going to play the game.  And I don't even see your logic behind your boycott?

All I can do is cheer those of your mindset on in your boycotting of SWTOR. Please please PLEASE stick to your guns and do not buy that game when it comes out. Not that it ever will mind you as SWTOR is doomed to never see the light of day.

SWTOR. Face it, in the Scooby Doo Mystery Solving Van of coolness, this game is Velma. In this current MMO climate it has about as much chance for survival as a group of inquisitive teenagers in a 1980s slasher flick. -Tardcore May, 2011

Good luck with this.  However, if SOE/LA wouldn't change it back from NGE to at least CU for the rumored 100-300k subs at that time, don't hold your breath.  Sorry to see your game go, many had that feeling 6 years ago and it stinks.

I fail to see how boycotting TOR can save SWG.

I reckon even if the few existing SWG subscribers boycotted TOR no one would even notice.

The best chance, and it is still only a slim chance, to save SWG would be to petition SOE to open source the server code so that the purchased clients can still be used.

The important thing here is to point out that the purchased clients are being made useless by SOE's decision to shutdown their servers. If they no longer wish to run the servers that is their choice but it is not quite so clear that they can make the decision to purposely break software that they have permanently sold.

While it is still a long shot, this kind of petition could be used as the basis of a class action suit forcing the release of the server code. Some enterprising and greedy corporate lawyer out there that specializes in class actions might very well be willing to take a shot at Sony's deep pockets. If Sony is simply trying to jettison an underproducing division then they may very well settle such a suit quickly. Why pay thousands or even millions to lawyers just keep the source of a dead project that is a decade old under wraps.

But the trick is to start this as a petition. First, because the petition itself might work if someone realizes it could get worse. Second, the more people that sign on for the petition the more likely it is to attract a greedy lawyer to take it the next step.

Also keep in mind that the petitioners need only be anyone who has ever bought the game, not just current users. I haven't played in a long time but I still don't like they idea of SOE taking the option away from me entirely. So I would certainly support such a petition.

I know there is a petition to have SOE keep the game open. That is the wrong thing to be petitioning. Petition for the server code to be open sourced. That is much more realistic.

    All die, so die well.

ROTFL!!!!! Will you even be able to fit enough people in a phone booth? Sorry, but TOR isn't going to sink or swim because of a boycott of players from a game that very few played.

Just give it up. It ain't happening. Experience a new feelling again in a SWG game that is a bit like it was originally intended with (at least when I logged on) a decent population....and it's free (unless you make donations). I won't go into any more details about the website that shall not be named. Google it.

So asking the 200 people who still cared / knew that SWG was still a game to not play TOR will save SWG?

My idea of politics is shaken!

Will develop an original MMORPG title for money.

why boycott ToR? it looks better in everyway.. Yes it looks like a different experiance all together. However Personally it looks like a better experiance all together as well.

i played SWG back in the old days for awhile and didnt care for it back then. I ended up going back to EQ1 which I thought was a better game.

Nonsense. Software companies stop supporting their products all the time. This is no different. Microsoft no longer supports DOS, or anything before Windows XP.  People permanently bought that software, and Microsoft doesn't support it. Should they be required to? You're arguing they should.

SOE and LA mutually chose to stop supporting SWG. It's going to close. Welcome to the world of a canceled and closed MMOs. I'm sure there are Asheron's Call 2 and Shadowbane players who know how you feel.
