I don't know why people praise 7 so much. The script/dialogue/translation was pretty bad, the character customisation was bare-bones, the villian was one-dimensional, and it started off the horrible trend of 3-character parties. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good game (the Midgar section at the beginning of the game is one of the highlights of the series--past that it's dull) but it's far from perfect.
I think FF6 and 9 are both superior, and so are many other RPGs that existed on the PSX. Grandia, Xenogears and Chrono Cross come to mind.
Current FF such as 12 & 13 are still high quality. Sure, they've been fairly experimental in game design (for better or worse depending on your preferences). Either way, they're not bad games.
FFVII was the start of RPGs being socially acceptable, and it was also the first RPG many people played. I've met quite a few people who hadn't touched the RPG genre until FFVII came out all shiny.
Firsts of things tend to have more of an impact than subsequent RPGs or games played.
FF6 was fantastic! played both the SNES version and the GBA version. i'm not sure if Square will ever get back its glory days, i mean the latest FF online was horrible! how did they ever allow that game to be released?!

I don't believe FF7 was ever socially acceptable, except to other gaming enthusiasts. No FF game has ever been what I'd consider mainstream, instead they until the end of the ps2 era were the epitome of great jrpg's.
FF X-2 was bad and FF13 was worse, both online versions play nothing like their single player counterparts, and 7 is overrated IMO. With the advent of the PSX, it was sort of like WoW, with lots of new people coming in who had no idea the greatness that came before in FF6.

I think it can be explained with one simple word: greed.
