SWG v SWTOR? Which one

mgilbrtsnmgilbrtsn Member EpicPosts: 3,430

Ok, so here goes.... I see all kinds of threads and posts suggesting that one reason that SWG was closed because it was competition to SWTOR so they cancelled it (I thinks its Hooeey, but the thought is out there).  So I want to take an informal read of what the MMORPG community would play if they had their choice.  Lets see if SWG really was a threat.  So choose and list your reasons.

I Choose SWTOR.  I like the thought of SWG since its sandboxy, but SWTOR seems to have a nicer graphics, seems interesting travelling to all those worlds, and an interesting array of classes and races.  There are more reasons I think, but there you go.

It's hard to say without having played swtor yet, but my guess is that I would pick swtor. I did like the openness of swg but at this point just feel like moving on to something new. I'm looking forward to the hero engine with hopes they utilize its capabilities as much as they can. Also, on a larger scale I would simply go with bioware / ea over soe.

    swtor of course.

swg died cos of the nge the open world and player housing and the character are still the best i've seen in a game.

but swtor has fully voiced, full class storylines.

swg now is old, and since nge i haven't even looked at it so swtor

SWG died for me when the nge hit, I went back for the free 45 days  I played a total of 3 hours.

SWTOR is were to be, but this entire question really does not need to be asked, as swg dies in 12/15.

Considering the amount of players percieved in SWG, and the fact that it closed down, coupled with the amount of hype and enthusiasm TOR has, is the answer already not pretty evident?

Pre-cu SWG beats most games hands down imo, but you cant compare most games.

The answer is self evident to me.  This was more an excersise to see if you had the choice of both games (assuming SWG was gonna be around) which would you choose.  I'm doing it to put the nail in the coffin of those that say SWG is being closed (one of the reasons) because it provides competition to SWTOR.  It is not self evident to others and I might be surprised.

SWTOR. {mod edit} SWG of either incarnation is just too damn old for me to find fun anymore. Not that I ever found the CUNGE edition to be worth a damn.

To the bean counters at LucasArts,  having another game around that might have mistakenly siphoned off some subs from the new Golden Toy, was  too much.   Don't think they intended to let it live beyond the end license date anyway, so they probably just sweetened the deal for Sony.

Given the situation, player's opinions weren't the ones driving the deal.  It was all on Lucas's crew's plate.  I can tell you, with certainty, which one they prefered.....

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Neither, as long as Lucas lives I dount there will be a SW MMO that truely captures the SW universe he showed us in A New Hope, or Empire.

I predict SWTOR is going to be terrible, so I pick SWG.

SWTOR will follow Warhammer, WOW, and so on...design choices based not on what would be challenging and fun to a mmo old timer, but based on what would be ez mode and a themepark designed for 15 year old children who want everything handed to them and who want to never have to feel the pain of failure.

I'll take TOR, because it's more casual friendly and appears to be much less grindy.

Right because the death of SWG has nothing to do with the massive layoffs, studio closings, and restructuring that SOE has been doing this year, that started before they got massively raped by hackers.

Don't try to troll here, but this hype thing about SWTOR is really getting quite annoying.....

Why does everybody think this game will be so good??

There isn't even a beta or what so ever, things what I did see (movies and graphics) weren't really that groundbreaking...

Prove me if i'm wrong, but for me it's just another mmorpg, with a Star Wars pants on...

This thread is a flame bait. all you want to do is stir up the fanbois of both games. of course any true fan of SWG is going to say Pre-Cu wins. Kotor fanbois are going to reply back some form of SWG 2.0 yadda yadda yadda. we end up at the same place we have always been at...nowhere on the debate.

Kotor wins for themparkers and SWG wins for sandboxxers. night and day really.

SWTOR, because it actually has a future.

Trick question. Star Wars : Old Republic of course. But what would SWG have been is SOE would'nt have screwed the game so much. A little advice to ALL mmo developers. Don't listen to people who whine about not having what they want. The jedi loving dim-wits are what messed SWG up.

    Easy SWTOR

SWG died in CU and got killingblow in NGE (and of course is going to literally die in 5 monts so why bother).

I never followed what happened in SOE after that but if i'd be the CEO and fully understand destruction NGE-architecs did to SWG surely few careers would have shortened a bit.

The Irony is that the way the MMO market has gone the last few years...  Even super hyped MMO's have had about as much future as SWG has from this point.   Because usually by the 5 month point the server merger talks are already underway...

    Beyond that...

If someone has much interest in SWG (I don't) and they don't have a beta spot in TOR... it seems to me they could play one until they can play the other.

  • ThorkuneThorkune Member UncommonPosts: 1,969

A lot of folks are still bitter toward SOE for the NGE. But, the truth is that SWG is actually a really good game right now. The skeleton dev team that is now SOE has done a remarkable job fixing the NGE fiasco. If I were to have to choose between a themepark Star Wars MMO and a sandbox Star Wars MMO....I am choosing SWG. It might be that I have sunk 6 years of my life in SWG, but that is how I would vote.

I agree with you. I am afraid that all of these folks that have pumped all of their hopes and dreams in SW:ToR and GW2 are in for a rude awakening.

As I have not played SW:TOR yet its hard to say which I would choose...

but for the sake of the discussion I think I would choose Pre-CU SWG simply because of the Sandbox style of play. I enjoyed the 1 toon switch your profession game style that was offered. Also with the limited MMO's I have played I have yet to see another company mimic the crafting engine that was available in SWG. A total player driven economy allowing the players that wanted to be involved in the crafting could be and those that didnt, didnt have to.

Like I said though I have NOT played SW:TOR yet only watched videos so I cant really decide until I have played SW:TOR

@OP: A bit hard of a question. If you mean SWG like it is now, I don't see how much of a negative impact it would have even if it stayed open.

If you referred to if an (official) SWG Pre-NGE would exist around right now, then I think you'll have quite a sizeable group of MMO gamers drooling at the mere thought of it, because those are the people that keep hanging around forums like here because they haven't been able to find a replacement MMO for SWG that could give them the gameplay enjoyment they've been looking for all these years.

it's really not a comparison.. people who want to play SWG are playing it.  you're pretty much guaranteed that SWTOR will sell more copies, etc.

If SWG and SWTOR were both developed at same time and coming out same time, I would definitely be playing SWG.  But that ship has sailed (or rather that ship has flown solo through a well-railed space course into nothingness).  SWG is soon to be put out of its misery and SWTOR is likely the only SW MMO we're getting the next 5-10 years.

Pre cu SWG is by far the best mmo I have ever played. Even after the NGE it was still the game I would always go back to when I was bored. If TOR is half as good as the old SWG, I will consider it a success.

This is a no brainer. On one side you have a new game based off of a very popular game series made by a very respected company. On the other side you have a game that constantly reinvents itself and never got it right. Company of said game was given the keys to the most popular era of star wars and proceeded to trash the canon while putting out a boring and bug filled game that few wanted to play. What choice do you think the majority will make.

Swg is closing because few want to play it. Period. No one at bioware was worried about the tiny minority that was still playing that joke of a game. Get real people.
