Games with Decent Role-Playing Communities

I've been searching for weeks on end now, looking for a game with a decent RP community. And as of so far, I've tried World of Warcraft and Champions Online. I still have World of Warcraft loaded on my computer and am using a Starter Edition account to judge the RP community there. But I've found the game so bland from what I remember when I played it a couple of years ago that I've found myself dreading going back into the game.

Champions Online peeked my interest because it was a fresh walk-away from the over-saturatation of Fantasy in this MMO market. However, I didn't find much of a RP community there and have since then quit do the game having problems on my computer. I'm not sure why, but I would play the game for a couple of minutes and then the damn thing would try to disconnect from the servers.

So, I thought that while I am still searching, I would put out an "APB" for anybody who knows of an MMO with a decent RP community. I'm currently in the process of downloading LOTRO (what a friggin' long time to install) and am going to give it a run. I really have no preference for MMO genre. It would be nice to find a sci-fi or other genre game with a decent RP community, but I've become so used to the Fantasy over-saturation that I'm perfectly willing to deal with magic.

I just ask that the game is fun along with having a decent RP community. Thanks to anybody who can answer my call for help.

Unforchantly im in the same boat i have tryed most games to find a good roleplaying community and the only one found that i enjoyed and actualy sparked my roleplaying addiction was Ultima Online on the Europa server but due to it being a very old game (one of the first mmorpg)and there comunity are dwindeling, In my own personal opinion roleplaying is not what it used to be due to the theme park mmo's. I will explane, you start a game at level 1 then spend time finding a guild/community then unless you just roleplay in guild chat only and then with everyone wanting to add there little part of the story it gets confusing. You have to spend time grinding to get to a certain level but i remember can back in the golden age of Ultima Online you created a charicter and you could be in a roleplaying guild and out doing something with your guild within an hour.

So i am kinda putting all my hopes on the old republic  which i think might be a happy medium between a world of warcraft clone and a sandbox game (which is gonna be awesome) im hoping that a good roleplayer base will start up there but only time will tell i know this really has not helped you in your search but if you ever do find one let me know  >.<

LotRO, Brandywine or Landroval servers have had active RP guilds. The guild Second Breakfast was going strong the last time I was there and they were holding regular, weekly RP events.

LotRO has been the only game I have found active role players just sitting in town playing music together or talking or whatever your storyline is. While themeparks are difficult, it is entirely possible to build your own sub-story woven into the game's larger story. I think with a game as lore rich as LotRO its actually easier.

Another option is Rift, check out the guild Magitech on Faeblight(?) server I believe. I ran with them for a while, before the game drove me away. That guild was a heavy RP guild and kept it balanced and w/o the drama you so often see in RP communities.

    good luck.

the last really great roleplay-community i found was in lotro on a dedicated rp-server. we even had 3 ingame visible gamemasters, who created rp-events based on ideas and help from the community, approached players with non-rp names (like xXdestroyaxX etc.) and changed them and always had time for a little chat. well, but that was years ago ....

I haven’t played LOTRO in a while. I don’t know what it’s like now but it was one of the best net havens for RP interested players in the MMO world. Landroval was the unofficial RP server and had a goodly amount of RP going on in my day. It used to be centered on the Prancing Pony (Bree) for random meetings and there were the Lonely Mountain Band RP shows. Since the merger, the Euro RP server is now international and located in Boston with the rest. It might be worth a try too.

Moonguard on WoW used to be popular for RP but I’ve not forgiven it for the ERP house of ill repute in Booty Bay back in the day.

When I think of all the games I’ve played in recent years the RP populations simply do not seem as strong as they were a few years ago.

Based on the number of people I’ve seen trying to RP Vampire the Requiem characters in every MMO, I hereby predict the CCP’s World of Darkness MMO will have a substantial number of role-players though. LOL… ;)
