But actually pretty fun. I'm playing the free trial (which as far as I can tell I have access to everything up to level 15) so plenty of time to decide and try things out. It certainly has it's flaws but i do appreciate now what Rift has (and tried) to accomplish.
The Good: The graphics are and sound effects are really nice. Even the sound when you accept a quest is well done. The spell effects are all better than most MMOs. The soul trees are also really neat. (Though at level 15 I can't really see the point of investing in more than two sould.) Still this provides a lot of customization. The rifts are also a nice distraction if nothing else.
The Bad: The main issue I have is the quests. They are all pretty much throw away quests. I quickly stopped caring about the story. Hopefully in the future they will revamp their quest line like World of Warcraft did with Cataclysm. Doing the quests is fine. I have no issues killing 10 of this and collecting 5 of that. That's an MMO. But I would like a quest line that makes me WANT to do those things. Again I think WoW: Cataclysm really got it right with the quest lines. Also, as far as not liking the storylilne, that's my opinion. I'm sure there are people who really enjoy it.
The only other probelm is the lack of tutiorial. I have all these planar shards orb stuff that i have no clue what they are for. Later I found you can spend them to buy stuff but.. that was just an example. Another example was the map. I see invaders going this way and that way and things popping up to say defend such and such and rifts opening up all over the place and I didn't know what I was suppose to do really. A little more direction would be nice I think.
If you just read this: I'm not totally sold on Rift but I have a new found appreciate for all they have tried to do with their MMO. It's pretty soild, and the best new MMO to come out in awhile.

It's a good game and i'm enjoying it, we just downed greenscale the other day.

I agree. I really enjoyed the journey. . .yes, I enjoyed the journey to end-game character development, but far less enjoyed the story since story elements since my personal participation in the story have no recognizable participatory influence on open-world massively-multiplayer game-play.
This genre has been fed so much lazy single-player rpg-esque instancing that community has become inconsequential and fractured to the point where these games really aren't massively-multiplayer games, other than in the sense that the main lobby is a crowd of participants whacking moles in-route to a mini-mapped instance of 5 players against pve or 8 players against another 8 players in a shoe-box minimap of third-person shooter.
In closing I have my doubts about SW:TOR and their potential incorporation of instances within instances and community fracturing tatooine 1, tatooine 2 and tatooine 3, etc. world instances, but perhaps more anticipation for GW2 approach to open-world dynamics. Only time will tell.
I agree, the game is actually quite a nice change from World of Warcraft, and the community is quite nice, there are a few trolls, but you'll never have zero trolls in any game, so it's alright for me. I've been playing for awhile with my friend, we're a tank/healer combo and yesterday we downed Greenscale with a small guild we've joined.
Yeah, I am in a similiar situation. I just got tired of Blizz's radical balancing schemes for arena. I have been just enjoying playing rift. My cleric is r6 and my other toons are on their way as well. Although, I am a little bothered by the incoming healing changes.
