Pretty basic request. I pretty much want the combat to take some sort of though rather than just mashing buttons until the opponent is dead. I would like this strategy for even when fighting the most basic of monsters. Any suggestions?

What have you played? What did you like about those games? What didn't you like? Are you only looking for triple A titles? Or other types of online multiplayer games? 2d or 3d? P2P or F2P? Is great strategy the only requirement? Need more info.
If you reply giving more info im sure we can all chip in some games

I really don't care if it is F2P or P2P. I am just tired of MMOs that are just a mindless grind (WoW and all of its Clones). I want to have think during each battle. I want a game where I plan to die a lot unless I pay attention to what I am doing.

Update, now that I've read some of your post history:
DAOC and Guild Wars (both only for PVP though). Otherwise, it's like the poster below me says: strategy isn't all that prevelant.
Strategy is suprprisingly useless in most MMOs, except for in a few raids where you have to stand in a certain point.
Guildwars have more than most onlinbe games. Eve is another game where strategy is an advantage.
But I guess we have to wait until someone makes an online version of "Natural selection" to get some true strategy.
Vindictus requires a lot of strategy, but it depends on your class. As an Evie, the game is generally extremely easy until mid-40s when you get to the forest boat, and bosses suddenly go from soloable to cheap as hell. With time and patience you can learn to solo them, but they can still take you down if you make the wrong move and don't time your dodges correctly. Lanns generally have the hardest time, die the easiest, and require the most strategy, but they also do the most damage. Fiona's strategy is a combination of precise timing for counter-attacks, and blocking/dodging to minimise stamina usage. Karok is a big lug that requires strategy precisely because he is so big; he's easy to hit, but he hits really hard as well. He also has some semi-quick time event mechanics to his gameplay, where you can stop a boss in the middle of their attack (even gigantic Raid Bosses like Titan) but you have to press the button at just the right time to grapple the boss, then you have to win the grapple.
The only downfall to Vindictus is all the battles are instanced. You have a central hub and enter your missions from there. Some people really hate that, others don't mind (I don't) but it's up to you. They recently made hard mode much harder, but the rewards are increased, too. Certain bosses are hard-mode only, and at high levels will 1 hit my Evie through her shields + armor + mana amber. I just did a Labyrinth run (41 levels of pain-in-the-assery) and we just barely won; the final boss ended up a doppleganger staff Evie (spells) with Lady Killer prefix, meaning she pretty much 1 hit any female characters in our team. Was incredibly difficult, but also fun. Had us Evie's actually using skills we rarely do, like our alchemy, just to stay alive.
As for more traditional MMOs, I wish I could give you an option. They're all much too easy these days, I think that's part of why I've found them so boring. I can't think of any traditional MMO that I have to actually pay attention to. Aion has that element, but only because of the open-world PvP aspect of certain zones. The enemy isn't the challenge, grinding while looking out for gankers however, is. Age of Conan is a challenge, but only in the instanced party dungeons. All the solo content is pathetically easy, and unfortunately no one runs the lower level dungeons. People basically power level to cap and then raid end-game dungeons for gear, skipping all the content prior to that. Those are the only two traditional MMOs I can think of that ever offered a challenge.
EDIT: Actually, I almost forgot, Guild Wars is extremely challenging. It's a bit dated in graphics (it's still pretty, just not compared to more recent games) but you'll need major strategy and position to take out most of the endgame bosses for each campaign, especially since it'll most likely just be you and your heroes. However if you resort to the community to find the overpowered skill combinations, the challenge will quickly dissipate, so it's one of those games that's only as challenging as you make it.
Some vids for you:
Vindictus - Ingkell Raid
Guild Wars - Abaddon boss (final boss in Nightfall, actually not that hard once you know what you're doing)
Aion - Dredgion
Age of Conan - Ahazu Zagam (they make it look easier than it is)
