LF Sandbox Game

So I know it's a generic title, but I posted a thread earlier that was... very specific on what I want, and I decided it would be better to just post a new thread with some generic requests and sort out the rest myself. :)

After years of themepark games, I am looking for a sandbox. Themepark games don't appeal to me because they are linear and the world is pre-determined for you. I can save the world and then go back to the place where I spawned into it, and the people there will still be in chaos. That's **** I say!

Anyway, Pre-CU SWG was my perfect game, and that's what I would aim for when giving recommendations. The closer to that, the better. The kicker is, I'm shallow, and have graphical requirements: I need to be able to use 3rd person, have to be a humanoid, preferably an actual human, and the graphics need to be average.

Let loose your recommendations! I really appreciate all the help, I'm hoping for something to play for awhile! Thanks!!

Played: SWG, SWG:NGE, EQ2, Vanguard, LotRO, WoW, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Mortal Online, Rift, Guild Wars, Fallen Earth, EVE Online, Ryzom, Dungeons and Dragons Online, World of Tanks, Aion, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2

You would not be the first to feel that Pre-CU was the definition of the best sandbox game. but that time is done and gone. the only game that could be the next sandbox is Archeage. and sadly doesn't look very appealing with ToR and GW2 surrounding it.

I would say that TOR and GW2 don't look very appealing with ArcheAge coming. To each their own I guess.

The biggest thing is.. that's where the majority of players are going.. Archeage looks nice but i don't think the player base will be very big.

Haha, part of it might just be the "fondness of looking back in time." SWG had plenty of bugs and a decent amount of exploits. It's PvP system was just ok, but when things got going, holy crap, I remember people screaming in Coronet for reinforcements at the Dantooine Mining Outpost.

I am definitly looking into ArcheAge, and unfortunantely, TOR as well. I know TOR isn't sandbox at all, but I have about five friends who are also going to play and that's always a plus.

I'll look into Uncharted Water Online! Keep the suggestions coming if you can think of any more!

You and me both. Everthing that claims "sandbox" translates to forced PvP or you get a content block at 20%

I tried Uncharted Waters Online, sailed to an invisible wall and got told I didnt have a permit to go further. I don't remember that in the UW I played.

I'd like to see the PreCU engine on another title. Modify the Alpha char (jedi) so perma death is Alpha death and I think it would make a great game. Maybe one day

Hah, yea. Sandbox shouldn't necessarily mean "No Rules Allowed." I actually think that is a major mistake. Being my first MMO, SWG will probably always seem perfect to me. I also had a friend guide me along for the first couple of days. "Go master Rifleman so you can fight from the back lines in my guild."

WARNING: Major tangent incoming... do not feel obliged to read it.

I actually tolerated NGE last summer to about last November because that's how much I loved the game still. I admit, there have been improvements, but everytime I look at my character tree I can't help but think: If they just changed back the professions and kept all of the other improvements, this game would be perfect.

Well, that and a server reset... The game was quickly becoming a ghost town...

The amount of nights I have spent awake writing up game system descriptions and proposals is ridiculous. In the back of my mind, I always tell myself: One day, I'm going to make this game. But truthfully, I know I'm just not in a position where I can. I have friends that want to be video graphic designers and programmers, but there is no way in hell I could summon the money that it would take to develop this kind of game.

For those who are interested, here is a link to where I posted a very in-depth request thread yesterday in LFGame... http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/321784/Doesnt-exist-but-close-is-always-better-than-nothing.html

One of the worst things WoW did to the MMO industry is make everyone think you have to be similar to it in order to succeed. Screw that, I say. Sandboxes AND themeparks are possible, the problem is, sandboxes are still, oddly, a new frontier, and often from independent developers. This means they are bug prone, not completely ready for release, and don't have the back end support.

If TOR has 10,000 bugs on Day 1, they can fix 5,000 by Day 8. They have a tremendous amount of financial backing and support (rumored to have surpassed $100 Million), from EA. Mortal Online has something like 3 programmers. SWG probably has less than 20 people total working on it now, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was under 10. Darkfall is growing, but doesn't allow the free placement that most people MUST have in a sandbox.

Sometimes, I wish ideas were enough to succeed, but money is so much more necessary than anything.
