And Rift is already giving away free copies less than 6 months after release....

And has had free trials for a few months already.

Rift cost $50 million to make...

They made a very nice profit. Plenty of servers are full. There are wait queues at login still on major patch release weeks...

SWTOR is confirmed at over $100 million, rumored up to $200 million. It has 200 hours of unique class content, per class. I'm betting that this game will be a little popular for at least a year.

Funcom>> Heh heh.  Did you see THAT?  We teased themn a bit and had a restricted Beta and then pre sold thousands of games based on HYPE and a well known IP and we cleaned up!  It was a couple of weeks until they figured out the game wasn't complete with all the features turned on!

Mythic>> Heh heh... Yeah... we couldn't figure out how to balance the game... but we gotz our money!  All your pre orders belongz to us!  ROTFL!

Rest of the MMO industry>> Gee guys... that's pretty selfish... we weren't ready.  Now how are we supposed to make our money?  Like, make good games?  (Fat chance of that)

Cryptic>> Meh... let's try again.  Hmmm we are gonna try "life time subs" only available pre release and linking stuff to beta access...

Rest of the MMO industry>> No way dude.  0.0

Cryptic>> ROTFLMAO!  Did you see THAT!  They fell for it AGAIN!!!!1111!!!1!111!1!

Rest of the MMO industry>> LOLZ!  OWNED!  Awesomesauce dude!

Cryptic>> And letz do that again!

Rest of the MMO industry>> No way dude!

Cryptic>> It's Star Trek dudez!  Heh heh... we aren't even letting the reviewers play the game and they are STILL WRITING AWESOME REVIEWS!  Oh... oh... lets link it back to an expansion pack of our other game AND chuck in life accounts again!

Rest of the MMO industry>> No way... no way they will fall for it.... they must be on to this by now....

    Cryptic>> LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!

Rest of the MMO industry>> DUDEZ! ROTFLMAO!!! PWNED!!!

Bioware>> Holy Crap.  You can't be serious?  I want in!  Let me! Let me!  I gotz Star Wars!

Funcom>> Wait for me!  Wait.... I WANT TO GO AGAIN!  These guys are n00bz!

    To be continued....

Age of Conan looked bad from the start. If a salesman is trying to get you to buy something and they throw topless female characters into the bargain BEWARE! IT'S  A TRAP! ... Never played the game.

Warhammer Online was awesome for 5 or 6 months! Got my money's worth lmao.

Champion's Online didn't look exciting enough. Nothing jumped out as amazing. Not graphics, not pvp, not story.... Never played the game.

Star Trek Online was fun for about 1 month. Bought the collectors edition for $9 on ebay... And the auction said the seller had hundreds for $9 each...

SWTOR might be worth full price. It seems to have a lot of content, which is the meat of an MMO. It's got ok graphics, great sound, gameplay is a mix of story and typical MMO, the servers will be packed, and it's scifi. SCIFI MMO? A GOOD ONE? FINALLY? I CAN HAZ? Seems like a must try to me.

The Secret World looks really interesting. Although it's giving me a Star Trek Online feeling, beautiful but be wary of lacking content. I'll probably pick it up on ebay a few months after it releases.

Sorry but that's simply not true. EA has stated the game cost between 80 to 100 million. They will not be anymore specific than that. That's still quite a bit more than most MMOs but it's not the excessive amounts that have been spread about on the rumor mill.

Age of Conan has a free to play option now and I've tried it, it's really not bad. My only real complaint is I feel like I spend too much time on loading screens. I especially enjoy the combat for melee based characters in the game.

James Ohlen called Star Wars a 'space fantasy' the other day at comic con, and I think he's probably right to do so. It certainly does have a lot of fantasy elements to the game. But even so it should be a nice change from all the mideval fantasy the genre is subjected to.

I also think The Secret World looks interesting but if I like TOR, and I strongly suspect I will, I won't be playing any other MMOs for a long time. It would take a Deus ex, Blade Runner, Shadowrun, or maybe Mass Effect MMO to pull me away from TOR and it doesn't look like anything like that is in the works.

The quote must have gotten garbled in the reply. It was "SWTOR is confirmed at over $100 million, rumored up to $200 million." Rumors probably aren't correct, but with EA who knows. There are all kinds of tricks to write off certain costs as unrelated. But I do believe it cost around $100 million, $80 million seems a bit low for the technology that they're using and all the advertising. Plus the massive amount of preorders, limited supply of $150 collectors edition sold out. Some of that money might go into further development.

We'll see. MMO developers should know by now that fans expect a content update very soon after launch, and an emergency patch sometimes even sooner after launch. Does that factor into development costs at all?

I would perform serious sexual favors (the kind my elderly hubby wishes for, but would throw out my back) for a Blade Runner MMO.

    Just sayin'.
