I want to hear other peoples thoughts on this.
what if game a game company allows their player base to sell gold to them and then the company themselves would sell it to other players for a bit more then their buy price.
this will make:
- The player that sold the money happy cus he earns some cash playing his favorite game:)
- The company will have another recourse that makes them money.
- The player that bought the gold gets it without breaking any rules and can still feel safe about his acount.
- If more games addapt some gold selling companys will be gone the ingame spam will be gone.
You might not think this is a good idea becouse you dont like the idea of players paying some money to go easy mode ingame. but there are uncountable gold selling sites they get used more then youll ever think and their are probaly people in your ingames friendslist using them and they will never go away so why not make it safe in favor for the company to earn cash, players earn cash, people that have the need to buy gold can do it safe.
your thoughts?
EDIT: people mentioning a company could go bankrupt becouse more people would sell then buy that can be solved by the company giving the seller their money at the time their gold got bought. Or they could adapt a safe trade like playerauctions does while keeping a few percentage.
And i do not think this will increase the amount of botters there are already illegal sites that buy players gold and botters can be handled by the company with some effort. I do not want to change to topic subject so i will not mention the name but even a indie mmo catches all botters and shuts the bots down.

the idea needs some work
I think reaching balance woud be almost impossible to achieve.
people would sell their gold to the game when maybe there isnt enough demand from gold buyers. the company would go bankrupt paying for money they dont want and cant profit from selling fast enough.
also, what would be stopping the RMT sites from farming gold to sell it to the company directly instead of to other players?
using your idea I'd add the following modifications:
1) people can only sell their gold to the game for ingame perks/freebies...vanity stuff like pets or costumers, quality of life commodities like extra inventory space, etc
2) people can only sell their gold to the game up to a certain point, or in certain frames.
e.x: once a while you open a place where people can "donate" their gold for that ingame freebies.
the donation stays open as long as the gold in stock doesnt reach a certain point.
after that point is reached, the donation is closed and wont reopen until enough people has purchased gold and depleted the stock.
I like what Second Life does, has an exchange system, Lindens for real money, allowing a resident to literally cash in what they have made by selling their Linden dollars on the exchange. It also creates a money trail which can grant time for fraud to be detected, so this kind of system in an mmo would kill off the gold selling black market and create a legitimate system that could be accounted officially. Bit like the drugs trade, but I won't go there.
If there were no MMO's there would be no cheaters... just like in real life...

Yeah right , who'll guarantee that game devs sell only amount of gold they bought from players?
Besides this would create hordes of grinders ,bots selling gold to game developers.
Besides I am playing a game to RELAX and CUT MYSELF OFF from real world, rl money ,etc
All gold selling, item shops are a constant reminder and ruin immersion. So well HELL NO!
Exactly what we need MORE gold sellers/grinders in our favorite games. Terrible idea. I come to play a game for FUN...not be deludged by such things. If anything, game developers need to take a harder line AGAINST such things.
Let's party like it is 1863!
My thought on stopping gold spammers has always been for the company itself to sell the gold regardless of if they buy it from the players as it simply stops the gold farmer dead in their tracks and reduces stolen/hacked accounts at the same time...
Such a simple idea that would earn these companies more money but they would rather stick the whole fanbase with capcha or security measures that are aggravating instead..
I tend to believe many gold sellers are in fact already associated with the company in one fashion or another with or without said companies knowledge so why not do it right..
Playing GW2..
I agree.. if people like to buy gold i say let them.. have separate rmt and non rmt servers that the company provides for...
the part i haven't figure out yet.. is why people like to buy more expensive gold from third party rmt rather than from the company of the game.
See Eve Online. You can buy gold there from game company. At same time Eve is infested with bots and gold sellers MUCH MORE than many other games. Gold sellers just sell ISK(gold) cheaper...
Companies selling gold won't resolve the situation.
You do realize that the minute you have non rmt servers, the gold selling companies will sell gold on them at a higher price, right?
Nope. Look at Entropia Universe.
Thats almost what you describe. With that you don't get gold farmers, you get credit card fraud.
The same with Second Life, but I think SL is more on top of it because they're smart enough to use paypal instead of direct credit card payments. No matter what you're gonna get people to cheat the system. The best thing to do is stop whining about it. A player spending money on something while you spend time on something has the same results as both of you spending time on something. Why? Cause the same ingame resources are still being generated.
Yah, but to give CCP credit, they have one hell of a tracking system in place....... I am sure a few people still get away with buying from 3rd parties, no system is perfect. I had a friend give a new accnt a bunch of isk, and there was no real trade, or transaction, and they assumed (fairly) that I must have bought ISK and promptly removed it after I recieved the contract, it was easily reversed after it was explained by myself and said friend.....but it was impressive none the less, quick too, like within 14 minutes.....
yes and the part i haven't figured out yet is.. why people who like paying for gold or w/e.. choose to play on the higher cost server?
I'm not sure about the game company buying gold from players, but if they sold a limited amount of gold to players, it could set the price of gold low enough that it would be unprofitable to run a gold selling operation as a business. At least in that one game.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
One of the reasons players cheat is to have an advantage. Buying gold on a non-rmt server will provide a bigger advantage than on a server where everyone buys.
i agree ..i get off of work to log on my fav. game to work even more...hell no!
it just opens the flood gates for even more bots and people in sweat shops working for a tenth of a penny only eating rice cakes / water
a mmo dominated by bots and gold farmers selling / tradeing back to the devs is totally NOT what i want
I don't play Eve anymore (PLEX system is one of main reasons) but threris still ALOT of bots and alot of ads and whole sites dedicated to sell ISK. I don't know how gold selling is made technically in Eve atm but it is still there and deffo not rare.
Still have friends playing Eve, I can still see lot of adds selling ISK on certain sites/forums, webs selling ISK still exist , even on Eve official forums you still have posts/threads about bots.
So yea it still exist.
So imho only thing to do is:
- stop whining
- increase account security to prevent hacking
- fight with gold sellers, bots and gold buyers as clever and much as possible.
Many mmo companies don't fight actively because gold sellers/buyers = subscriptions and alot of those.
Discussion about companies selling gold is taking place for a long time, and their ONLY reason is not becasue of fighting gold sellers but because some companies would like to do it becasue that would allow them to earn lots of $$$.
As a player selling gold by companies is not in MY interest but it is against my interest as it is ruining a game for me, so I am against and always will be.
I can compromise on most things , but this is one of few things I will NEVER compromise and will be content with.
As soon as game company sells gold I am out of the game effecting immedietaly + I will encourage everyone I can to do same.
It would be a rough game to play because you would constantly be getting hacked. Without hackers having to do all the work such as making stupid characters to sell the gold or paying someone else to do it they would have more time to spend hacking people. Wish we could just live in a world where people werent lazy and didnt have to buy gold and then we wouldnt have people trying to sell it.

i think eq has done a great job in slowing it down..
in the chat box it just pops as the word "spam"..so you dont see the plat./ gold farmers adds only if you click on the word "spam" link...if your were new you would think no1 is even doing this untill someone explained it to you..even then you your not bothered with it imo
did they stop it totally ..hell no..will they or any1 else..hell no
as long as theres a market someone will do it or find a way around it to sell wether if its gold plat gear or lvls they will be selling it
their line just couldnt be any harder...anmd still it isnt enough.
I wish people could understand that there is absolutly nothing game developers can do to fight RMT with a bare minimum of success...
its like telling the police that they need to take a harder line against drug criminality...well, they do, and still the problem exists and gets worse and worse....
@ Sulaa
As I said, I am sure it still happens, no system is perfect, but lemme say something to you and others stating they see adds all the time, look, just because XYZGold.com or whatever says it sells in game currency for Vanguard SoH doesn't mean they are selling gold in said game....meaning, in an very unpopulated game, no one is buying if there is no point to it...
In my example, what if I had bought ISK, and same thing happened, it's not like they would give it back if I complained...I should be lucky at that point to still have an accnt IMHO....so I am sure 3rd parties sell ISK all the time, doesn't necesarily mean the player gets to 'enjoy' said ill gained ISK. At least it is apparent to me, what they have going at least puts a stop to as much of it entering the economy as possible....it's a step in the right direction.
You know, let them bot, let them add to the company's revenue, let em be a part of the sub metric(s), just fight against the hacking, exploiting, and advertising (in game spam), and when it is obvious a player has bought some, take it away....and move on....3 strikes or something....cause believe me, this could be done effeciently, players are gonna more then think twice if they pay RL moneys for a product they get, and then quickly lose, cause you aren't gonna get a refund, lulz, and be lucky if you can still play the game.
If there is no demand, who cares about the supply
i think it was blizzard(not sure) that sued a gold selling company while there were alot bigger companys around selling their games currency and left unharmed wich did seem fishy to me.
Maybe blizzard does not but i am sure many game companys create their own little gold selling sites and i cannot blame them it is a gold mine.
and to other people mentioning a company could go bankrupt becouse more people would sell then buy that can be solved by the company giving the seller their money at the time their gold got bought. Or they could adapt a safe trade like playerauctions does while keeping a few percentage.
Players should never be able to take money out of the game. It's just too ripe for abuse.
A free to play game came out on Steam recently called Spiral Knights. In Spiral Knights, there is an Auction House (more accurately a Stock Market) in which you post an offer to buy or sell a fixed amount of game time (somewhat similar to buying and selling PLEX) using the ingame currency. The cheapest (or most expensive) offers are then shown first on the list, which encourages people to undercut.
The market looks like this:
Now, in order to get this to work in an MMO it would need a currency that is only acquirable through purchase with real money. Think RiotPoints in LoL. What would then happen, is players would place offers to buy and sell gold by the 100/1000 for a RiotPoint cost they deem fit. A fairly hefty (~15-20%) tax would be applied to the RiotPoints but not the gold.
This would allow players to give money to the company for the purpose of purchasing gold, and give gold sellers an incentive to sell their gold through the ingame mechanics. Players would then use their acquired RiotPoints in the same way they do LoL. Buy cosmetic items, EXP boosts, other misc items.
No chance of fraud, and the seller is effectively getting paid by not having to spend money where they otherwise might have.
I would only be interested if the gold sellers themselves were forced to display the Chinese flag over their head, and they could be ganked anywhere.
