Are you new to Rift? If you are, then this post is for you!
While Rift has excellent class design, and much of your character is based off the soul classes and abilities you choose. Often a new player will feel undergeared. Which if you stick to strictly the PVE aspect you will be for a while. Til late 20ies early 30ies. As such I am going to give away some of the things I do when leveling a new character. Gear in Rift , along with attunements often enhance your soul classes. Mind you, these hints are not available to you til after level 10.
At level 10: The first thing I do is go to your major city and pick up the Rift quests and PVP quests. There are two main types of Rift quests currently. Runeguard quests which drop Runeking currency, and regular Rift quests which often give planarite currency.
By doing these quests and Rifting at the same time you will be able to pick up 2 Runeking items which are both epic items. A necklace with great stats and a attuneable gem which also has great stats. The Rune quests have two really easy daily quests that offer 25 Runeking currency each. One is to collect buckets of shadowrain. Which you find around your major city. Your other is to douse shadowed citizens which you also find around your major city.
Both the items mentioned above can be found on the Rune vendor. Total cost is around 200 runeking currency. Which should not take long.
Now to Rifting. Every Rift counts! When Rifting make sure you do the minor rifts and major rifts. Also make sure you do bosses. As bosses drop the key sourcestones needed for your gear. That means lots of running, but its well worth it. You also get a significant amount of Rift quests which also add to your currency. Early on just from Rifting you can get two really nice blue items(or purp). A very nice chestpiece and a good attunement stone as well as planar attunements. You can pick these up at your starting area planar goods vendors.
By the time you finished the Runeking and Rift items you should be around level 12-14. This is a good time to start pvp. While some players start pvp earlier. I prefer these levels so you can be a significant help to the team you join. Below level 18 you can pick up 3 blue items. One is from a pvp quest(Win Black Garden 5 times) the others you can pick up off your lowbie area pvp vendor. Total cost is 1028 honor for two very nice blue items. Hands and Feet! The third blue item is a weapon you gain from the main pvp questline at your major city.
At this point and time you will see a significant difference with your character. Gear that you now have helps alot! Also at this point you should be level 15 or 16. The next step is to get to 18(PVE, PVP.. up to you!. At level 18 you can get two more pvp blue items. But its not a easy task. As you have to travel to the 20ies area pvp vendor which is found in the level 20ies area. Still being a teen, it can be quite dangerous. But the reward is great for the level. In this case you will need around 1200 honor. You will be able to pick up two very nice blue con rings from this area vendor at level 18.
By level 18 you will be close to decked out if not decked out in mainly blue with a couple purp con items. This will help you greatly if you pve or pvp. Which will help you greatly when you start in your 20ies and hit up instances or pvp.
I hope this helps someone. This is the strategy I use when building a new character.
Sincerely powder

Great post, i'm shure this is very much appreciated! Every now and then players like you make me believe that the general mmorpg-community is not as bad as the ingame-chats make it seem to be...
Interesting guide. Problem is that it's incredibly easy to get gear at those lower levels and also gear is not that important, since any player can vastly outlevel their gear in a couple hours (especially from lvl 1-30). It isn't until you reach mid level 30, that leveling starts to slow down and gear starts to become more important. However doing a dungeon each level & a zone invasion, every now and then, is usually enough.
You forgot that planarite can give very nice blues and purples before level 18 as well, just PvEing (rifts and invasions), including a weapon. Now that we can trade excess purple and blue gems for more planarite, it makes rifting even more important.
While I appreciate the commentary and even some of the advice. This post is for new players. I really do appreciate the insight given. Hopefully, some of the new game players will take all positive advice for what it is.
