Have you tried the newly released game Dungeons of Dredmore? It looks real fun and it's been getting a lot of praise from some of the big youtube guys (TB for example).

If Diablo isn't a spiritual descendant of Rogue, I don't now what might be.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

its a spiritual descendant alright, but diablo isnt a permadeath, try to survive game, and if you try for example nethack, or even the never dweller, you know what i mean, hard to describe the feeling since im rather new to "roguelike" gametypes :)

edit: i see you wrote Rogue, which is regarded as the original, didnt mean to sound  patronising :)

There's also Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

    http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/

It's an open source roguelike game with tiles. It's as hard as any of the old text based clones.

There are also versions of Rogue games with isometric views. The just take the code and replace the ASCII characters with larger graphic tiles. You won't see your avatar doing double spins that the lop the head off a gorgon but it's a definite step up from this

There is an indie game called Powder. It even has a gameboy version. Graphics are SNES-level but its very fun, at least for me.

I heard some of the Super Meat Boy team are working on a roguelike called The Binding of Isaac.

You might could keep your eyes peeled for that.
