Did people honestly forget about playable races being ONLY humanoid?

jiveturkey12jiveturkey12 Member CommonPosts: 1,262

Really guys? Everyone goes on about how this game isnt half-assed, and how the developers care about Star Wars and its Lore and creating a story based in the Star Wars universe, and you cant even play as a Rodian? A Mon Cal? Trandoshan?

Instead we get red and blue skinned humans and Twi-leks, thats it! Come on now guys, seriously with a budget of 150 mill, they could do the fans and the lore some justice and do some more intricate playable races.

I was just looking over the SWTOR offical Forums and apparently "The Developers will add more races at launch". And everyone excited because "They already have Models in the game for other races."

Again, is there where MMO's have brought us?

Where people lower their expectations completely and hope that they just magically pop in with the other races at a later date, come on, how many MMO's have you played where they have models in the game for multiple other lore based races that never make it in?

Anyone else disgusted with the slim difference in Races currently in TOR?

um what races are not humanoid in the starwars universe? i doubt there are squid-siths with 8 laserswords...

I think everyone got over it by now and either accepted it or moved on.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

There's the squid-faces, they're still pretty humanoid though.

Of all the reasons this game doesn't really impress me a whole lot, this is probably last on my list.

Are you trying to say that any of the races you have listed are not humanoid?

  • KendaneKendane Member UncommonPosts: 225

Not that your complaint has no importance, but can we keep why SWTOR will fail/bland/is garbage in one or two topics instead of the front page?

Also to answer the post, I generally play human, they wanted voice overs for player characters too, so Rodians dont work, and personally I care more on the quality of the story/gameplay than being able to play a BiPedal fly man(rodians) or a talking fish.  Maybe they will eventually be released, maybe not.

Didn't forget, just don't care about that. I don't want to play a blob or an insect or a being of pure energy anyway.

One of the main reason non-humanoid species aren't in the game is time/money constraints. For every playable species that isn't humanoid, meaning different body models, every piece of armor and clothing has to be redone to fit that specific body form. Since most non-humanoid species in the SW universe has a different body form/shape, a whole line of specific armor and clothing has to be design specifically for each of them. That is a crap load of time and money.

It is more sensible to introduce one species at a time after launch once man power, time and money is more available to dedicate to such an endeavor.

While more variety of alien races would be more realistic, races that are more humanoid (bi-pedal, a human type face) have been proven to be much more endearing and accepted. For example, aliens that resemble bugs are often viewed as enemies and are used specifically because they would get very little sympathy from the viewer regardless of what is done with them. This same lack of sympathy can be extended to other non-mammal based races.

Dog-like and cat-like races can also be as effective as humanoid races since domesticated pets of that nature are very common and are also well known for garnering human sympathy.

Incidentally this is why a lot of Star Wars main villains are severely deformed in one way or another even if they started out as human. Darth Vader is an excellent example. Most of his 'evil time' was spent in his full get-up, but was removed or missing when big attempts at gaining sympathy were being attempted.

Its ok to me, i dont care if they ever add something that is non humanoid like insect races or tentaclealiens.

"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"

Voice acting is very expensive. The only thing that costs more per hour is motioncapture.

Agreed. I would have liked to see a raft of preset iconic races on offer, and also a CoH style builder where I could make my own.

But then I would have gone own the route of allowing people to look like how they want like that game does as well, allowing character progression through slotting 'gems' rather then visible gear.

I hate the fact that I am only offered this tiny range of look-a-like races and cloned gear. It's unimaginative, lacks ambition,  and cheap.

It'sa shame they looked towards the wrong style of game for 'inspiration' for SWtoR imo. CoH in general would have made a better template for the game in terms of character development.

I just wonder how many people would have been put off by the high-pitched garble that was the rhodian speech in KotOR, or how about the incessant roaring you know all too well from the star wars christmas special, or the nonsense twileks would utter.

Because that's what you would be getting in voice-acting from your own character, and i personally wouldn't mind it too much (If they just added more than the three to four lines of alien-speak we got in KotOR) but i know from reading these very forums that many would be completely put off by it.

Now I don't know if they existed around the time SWTOR takes place, but it'd be pretty cool to play as a Hut. Or a Herglic. Or a Chevin.

Except that every race you just named is humanoid. Very few games depart from the humonoid form. Dwarfs are short stocky humans with beards, elves are tall slim humans with pointy ears, orcs are like human neanderthals. So why get upset at a game that basically does the same thing all other MMOs have done?

They, meaning Lucas Arts, apparently doesn't like humans playing the more alien species. Also it's a lot easier for Bioware to write stories with humanoids in mind as the main characters. They've already got a lot of story content for their release and they have to set limits somewhere or they'll never get done. Also the nice thing about MMOs is that they're never really finished, they can always add more races in later if Lucas Arts allows it.

I love how people bitch and moan about little stuff that the " Big companies" left out of their upcoming MMO.

All the while having no idea how much effort, time and money goes into the stuff that is in the game. I simply do not bitch about whats in a game, if I like it I play it, if not I dont, pretty simple.

If you are so upset then go to school to learn how to make games, get some investors to back you, and design your perfect MMO.

Until that happens you have no leg to stand on really.

And no I am not upset, disgusted, mad, ect ect. about only playing as humanoid. I have enuff to worry about in life than to worry about what someone is adding to a game.

  • ArezonArezon Member UncommonPosts: 282

I was annoyed at first that Bioware wasn't adding any other race but human. I got over it. It's a minor thing. It wouldn't stop me from playing. Maybe later down the line they will add other races. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

Well, the thing is when a game leainches with less vision, scope, versatility, and imagination in terms of character development and customisation then games did 7 years ago, which were built of a fratcion of SWtoR's budget, ofc people comment.

    And they are right to.

No, you choose 'bitch' about people 'bitching'. Which is radically different ofc.

Well, as consumers we actually do. I don't needto know how to build a product in order to judge it's end use and whether it's worth my time or money. Thats pretty ridiculous to say tbh.

yet, here you are,on a games forum talking about games...

I don't understand the point of this topic.  Aside from the Hutt species, everything else seen in Star Wars is bipedal, with two arms and a head.  They may have some interesting shapes, but they are still humanoid in basic structure.

Not that I would have any idea on how to implement them in the game (how would a Slith wield weapons?) but these are just a few of the more or less non-humanoid species I could find on Wookiepedia.

Can you be a robot? A robot Jedi would be schweet.

  • EladiEladi Member UncommonPosts: 1,145

The complains about the species just come whit the IP, I never seen anyone complain about a human/elf/orc game species selection or any other game before realy.

its just that people must have someting to complain about even if the game gives more species to play then most other games.  BIG IP , lots of people, lots of ungrounded complains.

henceforth I demand that every game that will ever be made based on any IP incl every single species of the IP Lore into thier game or call it a lazy crappy development team!. ... ... ...

Speaking of which, any mention of HK-47?

First of all, basicly every race you see in Stars Wars period is humanoid, end of story. Second of all, if you used the search option you'd see I've already posted sutff about the additional races that will be playable at launch.
