What is benefit of subscription vs. free to play servers.

Is EQII completely free to play? If not, what does the subscriiption servers  or subscription payment give you that f2p doesn't? If I go on the F2P servers, what do I have to pay for?

I'm a big EQ2 fan and would love to give a long answer to this, however....there are already several threads in the EQ2 forums about this.

I will say though, EQ2 is not free, period.  EQ2 X  is free.  EQ2 still has live pay to play servers, EQ2X has one server.  Check around the EQ2 or EQ2X forums on this site and you'll find loads of answers to all your questions. :)

well unless you are okay just playing the solo content then its P2P + cashshop, you have to pay the current expansion if you want to play the current content, and if you want to do any of the harder content in the higher levels you will need to subscribe.

its good for a trial but if you want to play the game proper you should go on subscribtion servers imo....but then I really hate cashshops in subscribtion games...

The cashshop in EQ2 is nothing but ridiculous items like wands that have bubbles coming out of them (only for APPEARANCE they have no stats....nothing does), and items like that.  There is no big deal with the station marketplace (cash shop).  It really is just hogwash type stuff.  No stat items.

last I were on the EQ2x server they sold rare harvests and crafted gear, not talking about the live server cashshop in my post, even if I find it amazing people want to pay for something that should be part of the game and not a tagged on supermarket

Dollar for dollar, the EQ2 Live experience is the better deal if you subscribe.  If you want to dabble, play strictly casually or just want to try the game out, EQ2X is a pretty viable alternative. But if you plan on playing seriously, you should subscribe. in either case.

There's several recent threads on this subject in this forum; look at the last few pages and you'll find one or more.

Bottom line, I think Extended is an okay package for some types of players.  I have characters on both sides of the fence and decided to come back to Live instead, where I can just pay my $15/month and not worry about any of that microtransaction business unless I want a weird-looking mount or prestige housing or something.  (I'm not opposed to paying a bit extra for that, but nothing they have on the marketplace currently interests me.)
