I geuss what i mean is a good meleee class to solo with and be viable in groups. Im a newb to EQ2 so wanna make a starting choice i can play for the long haul
In that case, I'd say the two Rogue classes would be good choices. They do better DPS than bards and are less brittle than Rangers or Assassins. They're less favored in raids than bards but are very versatile, with stealth and lots of stuns and such, and can even do some light tanking if you spec them right.
If you're curious, I've written an overview of all the classes HERE. I've also played a fair amount of Berserker, so if you try the Swashie/Brig and find it too fussy, you may give that a try as well.
I played a Brig and Swashy into my 60's and I enjoyed both rogue classes alot.. However, for Raids and even groups, I saw more Rangers and Assassins being favored due to their higher dps output..
I'd suggest you read up on all rogue classes included the play style and see If it matches what your looking for.. I wouldn't pick a class based on other peoples experience,, go by what you think sounds the most fun..
Me personally, I love everything to do with Assassins,,, but I loved what the Brigand brought to the table with how versatile they are.. Then when I got bored, I did the betrayal quest to give the Swashy a go.. Both are fun, but both are or were overshadowed by Ranger/Assassin...

Assassins and rangers do great dps and you will see a lot in raids because of it but the purer dps classes are also generally regarded as more fun to play so you will compete more with others for limited raid spots. For that reason support classes make it easier to actually break into the raiding game. The biggest raid guilds will actually have a waiting list for people wanting to switch from support to a dps class and so will never offer those spots outside the guild.
Tank spots are even harder to come by.
The classes that can get you into raid spots are Troub, mystic, coerc, illy, brig, inquis, in about that order. On the average of course. it will vary from guild to guild of course. Troubies by far are needed but hard to find. You can often get into a decent raid guild with a troubie so long as you have a pulse. If you want to raid with a wizard or an assassin, level up a troubie, join a good raiding guild, pay your dues while bringing up the other as your alt and then swap them out when the opportunity come ups.
Back in the day, my main was a Brigand.. Then I did the betrayal quest for my guild since we needed a Swashy.. Eventually I quit EQ2 after most of the guild split up.. When I returned, I found out Swashy's were pretty much a useless class in raids.. So, I started a new Defiler turned Mystic, simply to win myself a spot once I got him to raiding levels..
Your right about Troub's and Mystic's.. Not many people enjoy playing them, due to the fact Dirges are more fun than Troubs, and Shaman's take a back seat to Inq's, Temps, and Druids,, in terms of popularity..
Right now I started up my old Mystic and already received dozen's of tells from people wanting me to be part of their guild, lol.. Imagine how insane those numbers would increase If I had a high level Troub, LOL...

Depends what you mean by "best." I'm doing the Brigand thing right now and enjoying it a lot.
