Would you play an old game?

Every year, there are probably hundreds of new games and MMOs that are being released. Obviously, some of them will have more furnished graphics and/or game play than their older counterparts.

Given this, will you still play an old MMO?

For me, I will. I actually did. For some reason, I got tired of playing the "new" MMOs and I'm sure many of you will give various reasons why. As for me, I tried playing With Your Destiny (WYD) Global for a change. It's a very old MMORPG. I just tried it for the sake of experiencing something old. And guess what, I wasn't disappointed. I'm still playing it (I've been playing for a month now and will continue playing for a few more months). Of course, being an old game, there are only a few newbies, but that's ok. I was surprised that there are games which really stand the challenge of time and still be able to keep an active community despite being old and amidst intense and newer competition.

I actually would. I play alot of old mmorpgs already so, ya. Some of the new MMORPGS aren't that bad. It's just that makers rush to make them and not take their time to make them the best that they can be. Most old games are better because they have been updating over time.

I'm playing an MMO that launched in 2003. Does that count as "old"?

Age is irrelevent. What matters is whether the game is being actively developed and has a thriving player community. Most new MMOs are "pump and dump", and go into maintenance mode after the first 6-12 months.

I would play an old game absolutely, but I'm not sure I'd ever go back to a game I left in the past. There's a reason I left after all. Of course there are some caveats, such as CoH which i left only because RL friends wanted me to come to WoW with them (which was the only reason I left).

I've currently re-started Everquest :)  Ironically the progression server is at the same place the Game was when I quit, shortly after Kunark :P

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

i think i do on a regular basis: eq2 and vanguard and istaria

other than that i would love to go back to an active shadowbane or daoc, both of which i never had the opportunity to try in their glory days.

Yes,  I have had a lot of fun playing some older PC games, both MMO and offline games.

A few of my old favourites I can no longer play because:

    • they will not run on modern hardware or operating systems; or

    • the graphics were so low resolution they look very blocky and pixelated on modern monitors.

ya, ive had a helluva time trying to NWN2 to run on win7. read forums, checked discs, ran it in compatibility mode, just could never get it to work on my system, though i know it should.

oh well, all it would make me do is wish even harder for the impossible: a 3.5 dnd, faerun based mmo. (even though i know there are private servers.)

I love to go back and play old games. Especially when I see on steam a game I wanted to play when I was young and i see it on steam for cheap. You get the advantage of knowing what games are truly good when you buy them 4-10 years after they were released. Any game that people still talk about is worth paying 5 bucks for.

This is a big assumption from me:  When you ask many veteran MMORPG gamers if he's willing to go back to an older title, namely one that he used to play, they'd want the older version of it.  Meaning a state of gameplay that a game used to have before the devs f'ed it all up.

There are reason(s) why they left to begin with.  Dig around and you'll hear a variety of reasons why someone would never go back to UO, SWG, DAOC, etc.  Usually it's because changes implemented that were not popular.

Personally, I loved SWG back in the day.  But excluding the fact that it's shutting down in December, I would never go back due to changes that critically changed the game in '05.  Not to mention the once great, tight-knit community that existed has been gone since that year also.

    Edit to add:

Since others have brought up non-MMORPGs, it's a given on the PC platform that there's a bunch that play old games.  Recently it was brought up in the General game discussion about Arcanum, an RPG that came out in 2000 from Troika, and I dug it up and playing it alot right now.

In the same forum, I got the inspiration again to dig out Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines again.

I've also been playing in recent months BF2 and BF2142.  BF2 came out in '05 with 2142 in '06 (I think), and IMHO, are better than the competition of FPS so far.

RPGs?  I still have a heavily modified Oblivion installed as well as FO3 (not quite old, an '08 game, but not quite new).  Heavily mod'ed also.

    FO3 > FONV, BTW.

My rig at home has SFC3 installed still (Starfleet Command 3) with some mods installed.

In 2010 I had back on my rig my X-Wing Collector's Edition (X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter plus all their expansions), reliving a time when Lucasarts was a bad*ss development house as well as publisher.  Oh how they've fallen since 1999 / TPM.

Another thing that helps are some mods that add onto or totally convert a game.

In short, the PC platform is a great home for dusting off alot of old titles.  Some, especially those that were released from the 90s, may take a bit of work to function properly (i.e. DOSBox for some 90s stuff).  You can still use the same rig with some utilities.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Been back to City of Heroes tons of times.  That game is getting aged for sure.  Still a blast.

This. I started playing it again last week hearing that the Progression Server was time locked, which means you don't have the idiots rushing through content opening expansion after expansion 'because they can'. So I'm enjoying it, nice old feel EverQuest.

Looks also matter a lot to me.

Not that I would only play the best looking games out there.

But clunky graphics like EQ1 are definitely below my tolerance.
