We have just been informed about an interesting article that was posted today on FileFront. It appears that Blizzard is no longer releasing new copies of World of Warcraft until they get their server load issues under control. Here is a snippet from their artcile:
If you do not already have a subscription to World of Warcraft, it might be a while until you are able to get one. To say the least, the "test run" they mentioned in their January 10th press release has not been going so well. "We havent requested that any retailers pull the games they already have off their shelves," Gil Shif, public relations representative, said. "We're just being careful not to release additional copies to be sold until we feel the game servers can support additional players." Blizzard declined to comment on how long it would be until more copies of World of Warcraft would be shipped to retail stores. Some rumors had been circulating that Blizzard had pulled copies of World of Warcraft currently on sale from the shelves of video game retailers across the country, specifically Best Buy, to limit subscription growth. As for now, large retail chains such as Best Buy and Walmart currently do not have any copies of the game available. Even Blizzard's official on-line store currently says that they are out of stock. |

Frankly, I think it's a good move. I think it's a good sign when a developer is responsible enough to stop adding new players long enough to make sure their servers are stable for their current playerbase and for future players. And when you take into account they're undoubtedly losing money they could have been making in the process, it's simply amazing!
The players experiencing problems now are of course frustrated, but it's obvious Blizzard is working on the issue and don't want to compound the problem by adding more players.
I say GG Blizzard!
How to create Hype 101 when your product quality is arguable.
When you see the sells dropping, you have to adapt, and their marketing team is adapting that way. They could lock existing servers and launch new servers on new engines(would take a few days at most), but no, they dont want that, they want to create hype...LOL. Great marketing!

I believe that this is the reaction of a company that does not know how to fix the problem they have. By letting more people in right now all they are going to accomplish in the long term is create more negative feelings towards them from their fan base.
Blizzard is now sending out emails in reponse to players who complain about the servers telling them to move to another server. This is after they already once had told them to move to some of the servers which are having the worse problems.
All of us playing WOW are just rats in a test lab. Hopefully they find the cure while the game is still fun for most of us.
hahaha, wow!
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
honestly, I loved the game. I got it 3 days after it came out, partied up with a guild all the way to level 43.
When it was time for renewal, I saw the bad stuff on the horizon. No more WOW for me.
now, 15-20 days later, I not only have started to recover back to a normal lifestyle, but I watch as blizzard drops problem after problem. Honestly, the game is an excellent game, but it's going to be 2-4 months before it's where it was supposed to be upon release.
Sorry, WC3FT - good. WOW - nope.

What's this? An MMORPG having server problems? I've never heard anything so outlandish in my entire life!
Next you'll be telling me Wish has been cancelled!

A great move by Blizzard. Not only does it allow current consumers to get more out of the game they've already paid for, but it increases confidence that they are listening and reacting to server problems. Additionally, rather than sucker punch new users into dropping fifty bucks for a game that won't play... and really, a lot of games do that, especially MMORPG's... they release a press statement and won't sell additional copies. Marketing A+, Customer Service A+. Get the product fixed, and the users will come.
Uhh... anyone that is playing WoW right now will not argue about this. Whoever is not playing WoW will think WoW sucks and Blizzard sucks.
GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!
The game is fixed. The people have come! As a matter a fact, they came so fast and in huge ammounts that it's lagging the server.
WoW has too many people. If WoW sucked so much, they would get less people and the game will still be sold. But it's not, EVERYONE bought the game, EVERYONE is playing at the same time, thus servers can't handle ALL those people.

I avidly read everything I can on the forums and websites regarding WoW and to be honest, I don't see a problem. I played EQ for 3+ years and they had, and still have, constant problems with login, connectivity, quests bugs, and content issues. I still played. Thousands of us did. Some still do. And the game is still going strong.
Wow is making an effort here to try and correct the problems BEFORE they get larger. Why is that an issue for people? We asked for a great game, we got. We wanted customer service, we got it. When Blizzard is done revamping to appease the demand, they will be bigger and better than EQ ever was.
Blizzard is listening to us and responding. Be glad! It's more than we've received from other MMORPGs.
And finally, I hear all the griping but I have yet to encounter a problem. Maybe it's because I built my system for the max requirements of that other MMORPG, I don't know. Either way, I'm more than satisfied with my Wow gaming experience. Great job Blizzard!
Can you say eBay?

Can you see say `Thanks for paying to beta test our turds!`
The server issues have been disappointing, but this is a reasonable quick response. Dumping more users into an overburdened system would be a bad idea.
The server stuff is slowly getting better, although I know there is still quite a ways to go. No beta would provide the kind of load they are seeing right now - it's not just NUMBERS, but levels, activity, items, etc. that's causing their problems I believe.
The biggest mistake they made was that the stress test beta didn't come close to accurately reflecting a 'real-time' game environment.
Meanwhile, I'm playing on a medium pop server that has had minimal issues, and I'm loving it
Hey nice!
Who wants to buy my account???? I chose eq2 in the end after playing both, so its just siting there freshly cancelled
Sounds like a very intelligent, well-thought-out decision, and an excellent way to alleviate the server load.

Truly a victim of there own sucess - you make an MMORPG right and people actually like to play it.
Too many people, though I haven't had any more - or fewer - problems than any other MMORPG I've played. The only difference is that having one server down upsets thousands and thousands of players. For any other game you'd have to crash an entire server line-up to get that many people to even notice. Take a shot naysayers - the only point is that the only PROBLEM is that so many people LIKE this game.
It's only a matter of time until they get the servers up to meet the huge demand. It's obvious they are working hard on it. Things can only get better from here on out!
Those who whine and complain or are just too impatient - or unable - to find something else to do when a server is down can leave... perhaps try opening the shades and catch a little sunlight. It'll make it better for everyone!
I swore I wouldn't even visit these forums ever again, given the wonderful optimistic respectful and constructive community. But hey, I guess I couldn't contain myself. I lied... and even worse I'm missing some good WoW time!

You go make a MMORPG that sells 5x as many copies as you thought and deal with it in your own way.
"You go make a MMORPG that sells 5x as many copies as you thought and deal with it in your own way."
Blizzard screwed up plain and simple. The problems they are having are the result of poor planning. They obviously knew how many servers they had. They also knew how many players could be on a server before the game became unplayable (as told with stress tests). They should of planned to sell the software based upon the number of players they could handle. If your servers can only handle 300K players, then you don't sell 600K accounts. It's that simple.

Current player of The Saga of Ryzom. I waited 3 months for promised live events in City of Heroes, it never happened. Ryzom had one in 2 weeks.
who said they did this to create hype is a moron.
people in some areas havent been able to get the game in almsot a month.
as far as server issues, most of them could have been avoided by switching to a low population server at the beginning, but no. people didnt want to lose thier uber lvl 12 paladin. so they playin lagfest, wait in 2 hour queues.
i did switch to low pop server, and other than when servers are all down, which really isnt that often, i dont have any problems.

"Dont make me get my flying monkeys"
My thoughts exactly. How come they had more copies of the game on sale than they could possibly handle? Greed is obviously not their only vice
Well, I hope they dont do the same mistake with the European release, we want server that work over here... preferably.
whatever, this is just because theres so many people, and with so many people, they bitch.....
wow quality assurance is just as good as anyother mmorpg, but if the mmorpg noobs want to cry to blizzard about service, go for it, i'll get better service in the long run....
but realistically, wow is smooth and with alittle downtime and thats very understandable, 350k people are alot of fuckin people, thats almost the amount of people at the presidential inauguration, and i saw that yesterday in person.
remember, wow owns you.
and if you dont like wow, dont play, dont buy it, dont lag our servers, and we dont need you haters or griefers...this "hype" advertisement is real and the hottest shit on the planet and if you dont see that, yur sleeping....the game talks for itself.
And yet again Anofalye shows their ignorance.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
If you don't play WoW please stop being ignorant and stop complaining.
i think the people who are actually affected by the servers that are down should be the only one that have actual valid reasons to be frustrated.
My server is fortunately up all the time. SO I'm good.
Stop making it sound like ALL the servers are down.
You look like idiots complaning when you dont even play the game.
I second j3kki!
I have not had any problems and I started on the first day. These flames must be from people who don't, can't, won't play the game.
Get a clue...too many people LOVE the game!
GO BLIZZARD!!
