"epic storylines, extreme companion system, etc."

Care to elaborate on "etc"? Cause to me is sure sounds like there is supposed to be a period after companion system. And people use WoW as it's the most successful traditional MMO, don't deny that many developers are trying to copy many of it's features.

ToR isn't innovative because it's an MMO that has epic storylines. Don't get me wrong Im sure this will be better than WoW considering it's got all that and a liiiitle more.

But people are looking for something new and fresh. ToR sure as hell won't be.

Slight correction, some people are looking for that yes, not all people are though. The above is just another example of putting a little too much importance in your own opinion, as well as those that you see and agree with. Personally a lot of what I see people asking for would just move this genre farther away from what it set out to do. The reason they've become as single-player focused as they have is because of these types of complaints. IMO of course, as I have no proof to offer of this.

I just call it as I see it, this is what I see.... Content, content and more content solves nothing about longevity, nor does combat or anything else Dev related. It's all about how people approach the game, and each other. Dev content will always become stale or repetitive. There's no keeping up with hundreds of thousands of people. It will never be doable or done. Which is why they don't try to. Part of what these games are about is making a community within the game, making firends, buidling guilds, alliances and enemies.

That's not what it seems many play for anymore, as it's hardly something that's normal as of the last few years. It's all about beating the game and moving on.  The "failure" communties that stick with these games, are all that's left of older gaming communities (who always play together) who set up shop in a given game. The horde on the other hand moves on to the next game, so on and so forth. Until they have nothing left to consume. Kind of hive minded if you really think about it, like locusts.

You can judge a book by its cover especially if the cover is a video explaining why the book is bad.

btw Swtor would be a successful game if it was a disgustingly obvious WoW clone as oppose to trying to be a "ground breaking" overhyped mmo with new and exciting voice over quests and stiff non-wow gameplay.

If that's your opinion so be it, I just have to ask, what MMO on it's own strengths has staying power? What development style does? None.... SWG would of had just as much if not less if it weren't for community, same goes for EQ, same with any MMO. SIngle player games are the same way, without mods they're nothing as far as longevity, again it's the gaming community that keeps it alive. How would D&D be without players?

Why do people feel the need for meth induced combat speeds? We're not supposed to be binging on crack or meth and staying up four days straight to level.

IF WE COULD ALL PLEASE RECALL EVERQUEST ONE for a moment. It /literally/ took YEARS to level to max level in that game. Combat was slow, deliberate, and methodical. One wrong action meant you died and lost experience with the possibility of DELEVELING! You then had to run naked back to your body to get your items because they were left there!

I think people really need to take a good hard look introspectively when it comes to the games they play. It's most likely that there is nothing wrong with SW:ToR and something is wrong with you.

Maybe MMO is not your genre, go play Modern Warfare or Battlefield or something you can be all twitchy and chug Mountain Dew and Monster and rank up all night. This is seriously getting tired.

Well, I have a full brain, havn't played it, and I don't give a rats ass how similar it may play to WoW.  I love what I see, I love the lore of the Star Wars universe and while I have the patience to wait a little longer until it launches, I'm very eager to romp around the galaxy!

You won't be "romping around the galaxy" as you did in SWG (or could). The game is Point A -> B shooter rails in space, and the ground is generally instanced to hell for storylines (like Champions Online, with little instances for your specific quest), or relatively small open zones for MANY people to see others in, but not do much in.

I also got a chance to play it at E3, game is bad :(.

I'm sorry but these are the kinds of people we're dealing with.  "I also got a chance to play it at E3,  game is bad".  Sounds innocent enough,  but looking a little closer -- http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/3839886#3839886

Faded bomb also said " With that said, I'm not allowed to break NDA just yet without actually being approved to do so by the devs."  so he's also been in "beta" since late 2010.

Don't know what else to say other than, haters are literally gunna hate.  Theres no rhyme or reason   no point to just letting players be excited for a game.  It always has to be, tear down the other guys POV.

    Yup.. callin' people out now.

Exactly...I agree ~ if someone hates a game, they'll do anything they can to try and discourage others from having their fun.  They just need to go away already, they won't convince me otherwise with their hatred.  And for the record, I've already joined the darkside decades ago so your hatred wouldn't penetrate me and convince to change sides...ROFL

In response to the hatred above ~ I don't care how much the game may be instanced in some areas.  There will be qutie the compelling story to follow that has never been done to this level of detail before in an MMO, and I'm really damned excited about it.  I care more about the story than fighting mobs endlessly or as fast as possible to reach the end game.

Bioware does a damn good job at telling a story, and what they're doing for SW:TOR is exactly what I feel MMOs have been missing.  Everything else has been boring me to tears, but with this, even the simipiliest of quests to go kill 10 mobs has been made ever more exciting cause there is heart and soul and feeling behind the NPCs voicing their concerns with the problems they're having.  It looks and feels more important than it ever has before.

Even in WoW, and Rift and a slew of others, I still read every damned word in those boring text boxes, even though most of it sucked and was hard to care about the NPCs, I still enjoy story more than anything else.

As for the space game, its not an "on-rails" experience.  In those you have no control over the vehicle or whatever you're riding in.  In SW:TOR its a tunnel shooter, where you can freely move your ship around in a designated space as the screen moves forward.  One of my favorite games from the days of old was Starfox back on SNES, and that is a tunnel shooter for those that can't comprehend what I'm explaining.  Even the devs have that it is so...go look it up.

It's used to relate one experience to another, and as most people understand or know what WoW is, it's a great way to let someone know if a product is similar, the exact same, or even close to the same.

Thats the problem with the term. If it means the wide spectrum of similar, exactly same or close-how does anyone know what that means? If it's similar (which all mmos are in some way) then just say it's similar.

It's exactly the same damn thing as saying it's similar, to call a game that closely resembles WoW to be a clone. If it bothers people, that's fine, but all you're doing is arguing semantics. Clone, simliar, the exact replica - whatever. If you use it as a point of reference, people istantly call to mind a number of features that are centric to that particular type of game.

The problem is it's synonymous with a bigger problem at work here. Tunnel vision, all arrows point to WOW, this type of mentality has taken over the gaming world from a business perspective, as well as from that of the consumer.

While the term may just be typical slang talk now, it started out because of what I said above.

I've tried the said game too and the combat is not as bland and boring as you make it out to be. The game is heavily influenced by Knights of the old republic (duh) and thus the combat is similar'ish to that game, but much faster and no auto attacks. Sure its the "normal" mmo combat but if you dislike that then you must dislike almost every mmo out there. But those that loved the kotor games will -love- SWTOR.

We have also evolved from Eq1, and we are no longer the long-over-time meth heads we used to be. Compare combat videos of World of Warcraft & SWTOR, you won't see much different other than one has axes/spells/swords & one has glowybats/guns/explosions.

Plus, that business analyst calling SWTOR "WoW in space" was spot on.

The reading comprehension is not strong in you. :/ The point I was making is that people want some sort of insane crack meth combat speed for quick satisfaction. It used to be 1000x worse.

You know i was playing CoX (that X stands for  heros/villians for people who aren't familer with the term) and had a video of SW:TOR's combat right next to it and i was kinda surprised by a few things.  It actually seems like SW:TOR combat is closer to say CoX rather then WoW

    SW:TOR                                             CoX                                                                 WoW

Move while using abilities        Move while using abilites               Stand still while using abilities

+1 group of mobs all the time    +1 group of mobs all the time           usually 1 on 1 figths

Just a few examples.  Just to me it seems like it's closer in how it plays to city of heroes/villians then WoW, just seems that way when i look at them side to side

I agree, and the haters need to go play a different game then.  Mostly the 1P action/adventure or FPS if they can't stomach the slower speed of most MMOs.   They're changing though, albeit slowly, but that is why there are multiple genres to choose from.  If SW:TOR doesn't quench ones thirst, then play something else, and stop bitching about it...heh

Thanks..now i know why i kept thinking COX  in my mind over and over again. I agree, SWTOR is more similar to COX than WOW in comabt. Videos does not do justice to SWTOR though. One has to play it to understand the difference between WOW and Swtor combat mechanics.

People complain about the graphics, comparing it to the graphics of Dead Space 2 and Battlefield 3, but if people had half a brain, they would realize that in a mmo, you can not have graphics of that quality, or EVERYONE would have to have a top end system to play it with any sense of satisfaction.

Bottom line, people really need to stop PREDICTING what the game is, considering the fact that, I am willing to bet, NONE of the ones predicting how it is or what it will be, have even played the game. Seriously...get a life. Stop trying to ruin peoples hype to suit your own opinion.

Because you have a very, very shallow outlook on what innovation is. Innovation means taking an existing thing and improving on it. (example: taking your typical MMO quest structure and improving it). That's innovation, whether you like it or not, or whether its in an area you want it to be in or not.

Don't come back with well, story means nothing to an MMO, that's just utter BS used to throw up a smokescreen as to what TOR has innovated on.

If adding dodge to the combat ability formula in GW2 is innovation a lot of what TOR is doing is innovative, unless you have a personal bias for one or the other of course.

To SB fans, please stop making our demographic look bad.Stop invading threads that have nothing to do with sandboxes.

And thats exactly what Bioware has done with questing.  Added a deep vocal story to everything...

I mean really, to all that are saying SW:TOR is not innovative enough, what more do you want?  Really, explain it exactly, instead of just saying more innovation...you can't can ya!?  There really isn't much more any developer can do, than what is already there.  I sure can't think of anything solid, other than what Bioware are already doing!

I'm in the same boat as everyone else too.  I'm hoping someone will come out with something astoundingly groundbreaking that nobody has ever thought of before, and since we havn't seen it other than a few tweaks here in there based on what Blizzard did to the previous generation of MMO, I'm doubting we'll see that anytime soon.  I'm bored of whats currently out there, and while yeah SW:TOR is very similar to everything else, there are a ton of little tweaks here and there that expand on the usual and make it better.  Just gotta roll with whats being thought up, and enjoy it for what it is...
