I cancelled my Rift account and uninstalled the game, even though this has been one of my favorite mmorpgs of all time. I made the mistake of rolling Guardian, as a vast majority of the player base on every server I have been on has an IQ only slightly higher than a rock.
I refuse to join a hardcore raiding guild. My work hours are horrible and I'm not always on a set schedule. The game (in my opinion) is easy enough and PUGs / casual guilds SHOULD be able to complete content with no problems... (or so I thought...)
The few T2 dungeons I have run since 1.4 was released have all but made me emo...
About 75% of the dps players I've run into on this game can't do over 450 single target dps, about half of those people can't do over 300. Very few people have any builds other than "this is my dungeon dps build", leaving some of my groups without any form of purge. Very few people have any understanding of the very simple boss mechanics and even if they do, would rather just burden the healer "lol heal through it" (no purge + damage shield + continually beating on the boss = dead dps).
People can't execute mechanics on T2s, I won't even discuss raids as they've been a complete and total disaster, which has left me doing nothing but scratching my head and wondering how many of these people even manage to successfully put food into their mouths and chew without choking to death.
I've tried to help people understand; mechanics, how to tank, how hit works, how to dps better... but my advice often falls on deaf ears and I've had people argue against me, despite having evidence, guides, information, combat logs to back it all up. Very few people seem to care about anything other than logging on and pushing buttons, no matter how many times they fail (because it's always someone else's fault).
So Good Bye Rift. It's a good game, but the playerbase is plagued with complete morons and I just can't take it any more.

What did you expect? The game was designed to bring in exactly that type of player, and it worked.
You have a raiding guild mentality, but cannot join a raiding guild. It's not surprising that you would find pugs annoying. You're going to feel the same way about more or less every other game you play that has a raid progression system.
The potential upside is that Trion is adding content for people who don't want to be in a raid guild, but still want to do content. The catch is that you will do that content alone, or with one other person.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
T2s are so easy now.
Dude when the game first started me and my brother would log off of rift after a four and a half hour failed run of Relm of the Fae just scratching our heads.
Now u can do most of the dungeons with a bard main healer and a tank in blues.
You dont need over 300 dps, you dont need good gear and you certainly dont need to know any game mechanics to clear that crap.
I think if u played back when i started you would have had a heart attack... lol

Only game on the horizon that does not fit this first sentence is GW2 ,but the amount of personnel responsibility and reliance on another player goes from some small percent TO THE MOTHER F'N MOON. That game is 100% mechanics based.
@OP Maybe it is you? There are other options then a "hardcore raiding guild". It sound pretty obviously like you PUG a lot. I am not sure what the elitist attitude is towards people who are playing the game for fun and not using cookie cutter specs.
There are ways to be nice about these types of things without sounding mean and downing other peoples play experience.
Yeah, Rift is certainly full off self-centered idiots who don't know how to contribute to a team, like as you said, having a build with a Purge for those annoying yet trivial bosses or blaming healers for the mistakes (standing in front of a boss' cleave). However some of the worst experiences I've had was with tanking, because people expect everyone to know what they are doing.
I came into Rift with no prior knowledge of Tanking and after 2 weeks of leveling my Warrior, tanking those basic dungeons along the way, I felt like I was ready to do some T1s. The problem is that by then people in Rift expect Tanks to know exactly what they are doing and even times when I said "This is my 1st run" I'm usually met with silence. Like the time I did expert Iron Tombs and when we got to that annoying boss you have to LOS (or it'll spawn adds/fear you), it wasn't until the 3rd wipe that some decided to properly explain to me how it's done.
So my gripe with Rift isn't that most players don't know what they are doing it's that people just don't seem that fond of helping random players. So to the OP, during those times you encountered those supposedly stupid players, did you actually take the time to explain to them where they are going wrong?
Wow, and to think I was actually tossing around the idea of purchasing this game. Thank you, THANK you for showing me the light, I might have choked to death at the dinner table had I bought this game, but at least I could go to my grave knowing it wasn't my fault... I mean, what are we supposed to do with {mod edit} the players that, I don't know, maybe just play the game for fun? Tell me, WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO!?!? At least we have players like you, to show us that it is all about the numbers, fun be damned!
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
This guy is actually in the minority and get told to go back to WoW atleast on my server when they pull out the elitist I am better then you e-peen crap. Most of us from what I can see do not have the patience for min/max'rs dictating how to play the game.
The game was designed and advertised to steal from WoW's player base. I know quite a number of people that played WoW that are now playing Rift. Seems to me they got exactly what they were going for really......
That's IF this isn't exagerrated and the game doesn't just have the same type of population that EVERY game has. I'm pretty much betting on that.

Actually there are still some bosses with a DPS requirement that just can't be beat without good DPS (like the crystal boss in DSM). Time and time again, whilst playing a healer, I've been in groups where we just had to kick out DPS because they weren't geared high enough, which kinda sucks cause queing as a DPS takes an eternity.
Oh and I've yet to see a Bard main heal an entire a T2.
Sorry for the crappy dps output your coolness. lol Anyway, it's people like this that have turned me off once again to doing dungeons once I hit the level 50 cap with my second characfter as a mage. I was trying to do a T2 and assumed I was doing pretty well with about 300 to 400 dps. That is untill some dbag elitist started to tell me how crappy my dps was and laughing and complaining all the way untill I rage quit the instance lol.
I've tried all types of things including wasting all my coin on armor, etc. to increase my dps and it hasn't done me any good. I have mental problems and just enjoy these games to have a good time. I'm not looking for a job here and that's the way people like this make it out to be. It's no longer fun when dealing with people such as yourself who think they're the s**t because they push the buttons better more or less.
I've played less and less ever since that experience. Reminded me too much of the WoW bs I used to put up with when I tried the dungeons there, only this time I was enjoying the dungeons up until that point. Thanks for ruining MY fun too OP!
This website is a safe haven for trolls and haters. I'm done with this pathetic site.
Current dungeons in Rift require zero skill to pull off, i've main healed with my bard in my melee deadly dance combo build with my brother running an INquis/justicar Support spec atleast five times.
Before Trion changed the dungeons so anyone can clear them they were quite challenging and something i looked forward to nightly. There are very few bosses left that require any type of concentration to pull off these days.
The dungeon system has been gutted and quite a few of my friends left the game because of it. since the change i've run maybe twnety dungeons because they are so boring now. thankfully i only needed one more peice of t2 before we started raiding when they changed shit for the worse with 1.2.

any team based stuff in most online games is best done with friends. one or two is enough.
why?
well... imagine catching 10 random people on the street and giving them a task. whats the chance of them doing any kind of teamwork? very low. video games are just reflection of this.
i mean seriously look at any game... battlefield bad company 2, find a friend, get into chopper and youll be at the top of the scores dominating everyone without much effort.
league of legends, dota. hon - random 5 matched players just dont really work good together, get a few friends and gaming experience will improvwe immensely.
team fortress 2 - while even game title states that teamwork is crucial to winning the matches... everyone is doing what they want, how they want. get a friend, do a famous medic+heavy combo and you increased your teams likelyness to win by 10 times (atleast).
now you are saying that you have horrible work hours... well... does that really prevent you from getting some of your friends online? finding new ones? the internet is quite big, you are bound to find people that you can get a long with eventually.
So what you are saying is that it is like every other multiplayer online game out there?
You have a game with a multitude of people, you will have some that aren't the sharpest in the world.
I think you may be confusing intelligence with giving a shit.
Its a game. Some people take it very seriously more like a sport, use parsers, study their builds, ask for feedback on builds and rotations in guild or official fora. Some people wanna log in and bash crap.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
The average Rift player isn't any more or less stupid than those playing other games. On the dungeons in particular, sure they got easier. I love the fact they listen but I have felt that the Trion team is perhaps too willing to jump too soon and in some cases maybe too far based on criticisms in forum before they can see how things trully pan out as people L2P.
Based on the ad campaigns at launch (we are not in Azeroth anymore), they were obviously targeting players disenchanted with WoW so I was not surprised by the intial dungeon difficulty as that group was experianced at it. However, I am not sure "disenchanted WoW players" are actually their sustained player base of subscribers since irregardless of the truth there is enough pereption of a likeness in play that those folks have probably quit by now...
So the dungeons got easier. Amongst other things. It begs the question though, who is subscribing to Rift? What is their current target audiance? One could speculate that it's actually a more casual, less grindy, into the action bunch, wanting more out of a couple of hours play time with less stress per week based on mechanics and patch note tweaks. Maybe some younger folks too. I am not sure how sustainable it is.
EDIT: It would pan out then that the average PUG... May not care as much as in some games.
I am not ninja enough to sneak into their offices and find the subscriber demographics data to know for sure. And if I were, I'd not admit it.
I think part of playing an mmo is finding people you enjoy playing with. That is a task unto itself. Spend time running around doing raids, dungeons, battlegrounds, group quests, rifts, etc. and slowly build up a list of friends that you can rely on and have fun with. Sometimes you can form a guild that way. Other times you will notice that a lot of your friends are in the same guild and you can join theirs.
In any case, its unfortunate to quit a game before you have a chance to meet people you may like. You cant realistically expect to have quality people come out of the woodwork looking for you to play with them. If you rage quit and post about it on the forums, youre not exactly attracting the type of players youre looking for.
You do know that an Inqis/Justicar/* is a self healing Cleric spec don't you?
