I think the whole point of MMOs is having a YOU that can do things you wouldnt normally be able to do.

So, fight dragons, yes. Play soccer, no. Maybe as a mini-game IN a MMO. But not a MMO based around playing soccer.

If you *really* wanna play soccer in a game, get a console single player game. Or, hell, play soccer with some friends.

After seeing someone like me try to play soccer, a MMO that allows you to do something you normally wouldn't be able to do could be a soccer game.

image samer here but I don't know why anyone would want to pay a monthly fee to play soccer, there is no crafting and nothing else that will make you play it for quite some time so maybe in multiplayer but never in a mmorpg, but i would like that as a minigame in a mmorpg but with the heads of fallen enemies.image

Actually if they made a football(american) game like this I think I'd love it.

Will you love it so much you are willing to pay to play per month? Buy a console if you already don't have one and buy an american football game, will get you started real fine.

Hrm that sounds similar to your regular NHL/Madden/Grand Prix type of "online leagues" ? If you think about it, for a Sports game you only need the playing field [or race track]. On top of that, you will be limited to the sport's 'regular amount of players' in a particular game. So for Soccer, if you go on individuals, 22 players?
That's not really massive. Yes, alot of players will be playing matches, but it'll all happen in somewhat isolation, unless they add some spectator effect. You will probably not 'run around' looking for a match, you'll sit in some chat room and arrange a match from there.

Main obstacle to all racing/sports/fps type of games are the issue of player-keyboard skill vs. ingame-statistics driven skill. AD&D type of games almost solely uses statistics, which you build up over a long time. Sports games are exactly the opposite, it's generally based on how good you are with the keyboard/gamepad , which means you play it because you can be good right from the start. Imagine if you could not strafe in DOOM3 because your agility stat is too low [and to raise it you first had to do some really boring "treadmilling" by killing a zillion little crabs for a month].

I wouldn't play anything that involved "soccer".

I'de be very interested in a football game though.

    This is a great idea.

However, alone it would not be enought.

It would need to include many big sports, and been in the high end of 2 sports should be nearly impossible.  Soccer is a must, football is a must, hockey is a must(never replace folks OR only 2 groups that replace each other and on the bench they should have something trivial(memory game to get more stamina back?) to do(so can afk fast but not wanting to do it systematically), basketball is a must...baseball should either be for solo players(running whole team) or optional, it is boring to wait, players want to PLAY!

It would need many other smaller sports and new sports that are invented for the game only.

But yes, this idea is great and peoples COULD get addicted a lot, just dont limit yourself to soccer only, or baseball only, you are doomed before you start if you do.  However, by embracing many big sports, players can try a little of each and then play where they are making more fun.

And for the peoples saying doing stuff you cant do in RL, well, I can play hockey or soccer, but I will never qualify for INTERNATIONAL levels of competition.

    You would need:

    - A calendar for ''professional'', call me all the names you want, the match is scheduled precisely in the high end, period.  You miss it, your toon have the diarhea or fail a test about drugs.

    - Different gameplays.  A hockey game and a soccer game should be completely different and have about nothing in comon beside a net.  Your fighting skill may matter in a hockey game.

    - Many tournements on a regular basic.

    - GMs run professionall teams(who try to hire players, they are coachs).  You need a minimum of competition, and you may turn the leadership to players and take it back at your desired, of course successfull stars players should be able to start their own team in a somewhat midget setting.  Of course every player can be coach of pee wee teams and learn the basic there.  Eventually a GM team may hire only staff of the game and act a mean way if the players have the tools to beat the crap out of them(you dont want to win with the GMs teams at all, you want players to take over, however, when they are to little involved, well, you can encourage them to take over in many ways).

    - Financial status of the team.  Many peoples want to run business and play those aspects, and peoples playing the online sport will be quite more involved if their team have issues and they have to do something to get it the financial boost in order to compete with the GMs run teams.

    - ''Garage leagues'' should be fun from the starting moment, have no calendar and play whenever they want, however, like I say, ''professionnal'' leagues need a calendar.  Skills beyond a point should only apply to professional league, so ''garage league'' can be fun and not owned by a few bored professionnal players(like a level cap).  A very few skills from professionnal league could help in the garage league, but it should be trivial, professionnal players wont get that involved in lowbie games usually, they are still the best, but they aint alone, because they dont risk an injury.

    - Each player should developp his replacement toon in case he get injured, this is a whole different system to developp and you never know when you will need it.  Replacement should be more resistant to injuries but not immune, if he get injured as well, you are out of the game and the computer play the replacement, this should almost never happen, boogeyman tales.

    - The worst injury should affect the remaining of this game and no more then 2 others games and it should be rare, current game or next game injury should be happening from time to time...it is about FUN, not reality.

    - I would love a version of Bloodbawl!  image

    kiekko

Kiekko is a hokcey game what is just like you saud, but theres not xp... Theres reputaion if you gain it you can go to play example to the final, and you get reputation from every match you win.

And then theres shot online too

But i think game houses wouldnt take your idea, because it is so risky does it come popular.
