Hi all, I'm currently playing WoW( have been on since vanilla) and while I'm not dreading it, I'd like to get into a new world.

The biggest thing I like in a game is community. Looking for a big, quality game that feels populated and has intelligent people. I've played WoW, Rift, Aion, Priston Tale (Wayyy back lol), MS, AoC( during launch), DDO(during launch) LOTRO, GW and others. I prefer P2P since I'm usually not a fan of item shops etc... Thanks in advance!

EVE - 30-50k people on the same server at any given time. Quality game, very different from WoW. Lots of intelligent people (there is a fair amount to learn to do even basic things)

Warhammer - Almost always find a battle with 30 to 100 people any time of the day. Fun people, less elitism than WoW, since gear matters less than just paying attention to warband orders.

Sorry should have mentioned I tried Eve, wasn't terribly impressed, and how is WAR doing? Last I heard it was in a sharp decline and most people abandoned ship.

There are a lot of people butthurt over WAR not meeting their expectations at launch and cant get over it. I was dissapointed too, because I love the WARhammer lore. BUT they have consolidated servers so the perhaps not huge population is concentrated. It also was never that bad of a game, it was just way overhyped. It is some of the best open world MMO PvP out still. I was in a fight in tier 3 last night with 160 people in the zone.

There is a free trial which gives you the first tier. Know that things slow down a bit in tier 2, pick up some in 3 and then are allout full map brawls at tier4.

Yeah that is the case. However, they consolodated the servers into 2 US, 2 UK and a German one so population 'seems' healthy. Whether that is stil the case in 6 - 12 months time is anyones guess but you're not looking for a long term MMO anyway.

Of the existing servers Karak-Norn (UK) & Gorfang are the two with this most population. Scenarios (BG's) don't pop in t2 & 3 on any server but that's due to gear gap in tier 4 forcing everyone to maximise their renown level before hitting 40. To do this they spend all their time during t2 & 3 doing RvR in the lakes and taking keeps.

I just made another go at Vanguard after playing at release for a couple months.  It's really improved and there are a lot of new people playing.  The community seems very nice so far.  Free 14 day trial, so you can get your feet wet.

     ya good points.

And I agree Vanguard is a great game. I just couldn't find anyone to play with. :(

if you want to test out a more sandox orientated game you could give perpetuum online a look. is somewhat similar to eve at first but combat and quite a lot of other things are done quite nicely.

regarding WAR..i also recently returned to it as i like to play a more themepark orientated game also in between my sandabox and have i say i really enjoy it and will very likely switch my second game from WoW to WAR for a month to check it more closely.

first i really like that there is (like in daoc) a meaningfull advancement path besides just gear with the rvr ranks and the rvr got better a lot ( i quit back then due to just PvE-RvR). basically when WoW is the "log in and have instant fun with PvE" type, WAR is the same on RvR/PvP. you log in, check the war report and move into the RvR zones where the action is, you do not really need to search for a grp (tho having a good guild around you surely adds to the fun a lot) and get right to bashing other ppl and the city sieges happen quite often as it seems :P same goes for the battlesgrounds where i have to wait way less compared to WoW most of the time...odd enough :)

atm i find it odd that WAR went down so massive as the game itself is good and at least the remaining servers seem stable and healthy.

    hope that helps

Okay so, so far WAR and Vanguard are on my  to-do list, any others while I'm researching?

EDIT: Also, I've heard good things on Aion, anyone care to share any past experiences?

Question is what do you mean by "filler" ? Do you need some fun before some specific game comes (such as gw2) ? or are you prepared to switch to another game for a long time ?.

Colored as I am I must recommend everquest progression servers if you are in for a long haul. There are plenty players, and the game has so much content and dept that wow will feel like pacman. Progression means it is a new server that starts with first expansion and expansions are rolled on at 2-3 month interval if player votes accept it - This means you wont be overwhelmed by the mighty 18 expansions and can enjoy the game as it builds up.

It is however a tough ride, and not everyone will like it. Graphics are poor, there is grind, long raids and grouping and guilding is a must if you want to experience anything but the surface. There will be moments of pure frustration and moments of awesomeness. And this is probably the last chance to experience the greatest pve game ever imho. Players can be a little reserved at first, but once you find a friend .. All I can say is if you can live with the flaws, the game will gain on you for years. If you decide to quit after a week because it is boring, then you are right .. if you decide to stay longer because it is exciting, then you are right. (I am currently playing eq progression server Vulak, so feel free to message me here if you want more info).

Vanguard is my next recommendation, also called the true everquest2. I am not sure how populated it is, but it is the most interesting pve mmorpg since everquest. I would say Vanguard is a great filler, because despite what others claim the content is pretty limited (still my opinion only). Open world, best and most interesting classes in any mmorpg, somewhat grindy but not as much as everquest or wow. I loved it for the time I played but I still think there is only so much to do, and combined with the fact that it is abandoned (read no expansions will come), it will make a great filler for half a year depending on how much you play and how much you will like to do the same things again. Oh and on the graphics side, I would put it in top 5 of all mmorpgs. A real good pve game with all the right ideas.. with no future hehe. Players are/were friendly.

Conan might be good too. I havent played it since release, but what I hear is that it got better. Better get opinions from someone who plays it now.

Aion has some charm but if you are not a hardcore pvp player I don't think it can hold your attention very long.

Aion. Looks good really good. Decent story and cut scenes. The lowest level of character (powers skills) customization I've seen in a P2P MMO and even many f2ps have better. Makes PvP, when is a big focus, so predicatable. Longer grind than many other games which is a plus or minus depending on your play style.

You should give age of conan a try now.  They got it running very smoothly now.  Its got a f2p model, the graphics are amazing, and the combat is refreshing.  Loads of people playing now that it went f2p.
