If you want to make a new account, all you have to get is WoW standard, if you want to play as Blood Elf or Draenei and wish to continue from 60 to 70, you need to buy Burning Crusade. Wrath of the Lich King is content from 70 to 80 and new class, Death Knight that starts at lvl 55.

If you want to have all the races, including Worgen and Goblin as an option to play from the start, all the content, and all the levels from the moment go, then yes, you have to buy all expansions.

Blood elves and Nei' are included in the 20 day unlimited trial now, and in the base price, they sorta rolled it into the base game now I believe.

I didn't buy anything to make a fresh start.  I already owned all the expansions and the original game.  All I had to do was download it all again (or install from my discs) and then pay the monthly fee.

To "start fresh" I just started on a server I'd never played on before, therefore starting with no gold and no main to "take care of me."  That's what I meant by "starting fresh".....not having advantages that I would have playing my old main or alts or on a server where I have gold.

I tried this on a number of games I had played in the past.  Works for a couple of months until you get to the point where you get to the grind for those upper levels and you start thinking...  meh

I have been bouncing around in the F2P stuff and playing some old single player rpg's.  Picked up Witcher2 tonight which I never played and heard good things about.  Got a freakin collectors edition for $40. hehe, only one they had.  Was looking for Deus Ex but they apparently did a recall on the PC Game and do not have another release date for it.  So.......

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

@ the op,this is not about flaming at all,i will ask you this simple question.

Do you feel with the millions in profits Blizzard has made from Wow ,that they have put back in the same effort?

    I will use my example...

I roam game to game quite often,as there really is not one excellent effort, they all fail in many ways.I was in and out of Wow very quickly ,i just found the graphics and game to be extremely bland, then i ran into ROM.I found ROM to be an almost identical game as far as game play goes.I am not comparing pvp because i don't care about pvp at all, just pve.I stayed in and enjoyed ROM for 6 ,months that is in comparison to Wow a game i never lasted more than 1 month at a time. There is no sub fees in ROM but yes it will cost you some money, the bottom line however is that i got better value from a low budget developer than i did from the billionaire Blizzard outfit.

so i u wouldnt have to buy BC or LitchKing ? or i just  have to buy Cata.? i know about haveing old disc's..but for some people its been soo long they may has already gotten rid of them in 1 way or another..so if you dont have disc's and you want fresh start you will have to pump out 80+ dollars for a mmo that is seeing its age and a mmo that seems more like a f2p game correct?

you still need to buy Burning Crusade and other expansions if you want to see the expansion content

the starter edition includes Blood Elfs/ Draenei and their associated starting areas -- but thats all

I have never played WoW, but once I was so bored I decided to give it a go... It asked me to spend 200$ on expansions...

    I have never played WoW.

Just so you know....I don't have ANY strong feelings about WoW, and no, I don't think Blizzard has put back INTO the game the effort that their billions MADE from it would represent.  Absolutely not.  I have already, since this thread began, played two new characters to level 22 and 23 and quit WoW again, probably for the final time.  I'm playing Guild Wars now, which I had never played, and just the fact that it's a NEW game to me is making it more enjoyable than WoW.  I don't know that I'll ever be able to return to WoW and enjoy it like I used to, UNLESS Blizzard did a whole lot of work on a HUGE new expansion, which I don't believe we will ever see.  Their development department has moved on to other things, I think.  WoW is just an aging dinosaur.

I guess it depends on how much "Alt'ing" you did in WOW.  :)

I did this exact thing for the exact same reason.  In my last ditched effort of desperation, I created an orc shammy on a RP server and set all these self imposed rules on myself (always speak in RP, etc.) to make the game interesting.....and it was for a bit.

If you haven't played the Cata content, you might find the starter zones a bit refreshing, as much of the starter content has been shaken up and refined a bit.

BUT, for me....eventually the novelty of the new zones & character models wore off rather quickly and the game, ONCE AGAIN, became nothing more than a kill / deliver quest grind, with some wham bam thank you mam 5 man dungeons in between.

The majority of alts you'll run into have legendary gear and dungeons aren't a challenge at all.

With all that said, I've run the gambit MANY times with alts....in search for a breathe of fresh air, so it may take you a bit longer for that newness to wear thin.

In the end, to each its own......but as much that has changed in WOW, the core things have stayed the same.  GEAR, LEVELS, QUESTS, DUNGEONS, GEAR, LEVELS...

  • just1opinionjust1opinion Member UncommonPosts: 4,641

Sadly, I've played it all.  Had loads of alts and a few "mains," actually, that were 80 and 85.  I had a worgen and a goblin and played to level 70 on Alliance side and max level on Horde. I've played every race and every class and I played for six years.  There's just nothing left for me, even though it seems that I have to keep "making sure."  I think this time was the last.

To be fair to Blizzard.....you can't just infuse $$$ into the game and get magic gold.  They just aren't set up to reinvest all these BILLIONS of dollars back into the game and deliver fresh new and completely different game experiences.

They framed this game up back in 2004 as an user friendly MMORPG that appeals to a casual gaming audience.  I'm not knocking casual gamers, but Blizzard can't exactly make the game too challenging or deep....otherwise they chase away the audience they intended on bringing into MMORPG gaming in the first place.  So you will have a sort of....lowest common denominator thing going on.

Given the 2004 infrastructure in networking & graphics....they HAVE infact invested a bunch of that money back into the game.  They have world class orchestras & composers laying down the soundtrack....and have the best & brightest animators, developers....and probably a few sociologists on staff too.  The've basicly done a complete overhall on the entire game world to make the Cata expansion happen.  If you can't stoke up some new interest by literally unearthing all the original starter zones, contested zones, and endgame content.....then I don't know what else than can do.

With that said....its still very much the SAME GAME.  It's a game that is heavily geared toward progression via equipment upgrades....and you get said upgrades by grinding through similar type quests from lvl 1 to 85.  The game is geared for low difficuluty and to be solo friendly.......as a result, many players have gone through the motions for several characters over several years....and no amount of lipstick on the pig will change its appearance.

While I wish you all the best... I've been in WoW since late beta. At this point I have six 85's (five on the US realms, and one on the European).  I started over on the European realms in order to play with a long time friend who had moved to Ireland. Starting over from nothing was more of a PITA than I had expected, but it was made up for by being able to play together, and the major exp boost of the buddy system helped.

But its the same old grind once one hits level cap.  WoW for all its faults (which are legion...) is a good game up to level cap.  If you have someone to play with, it might be worth it. Other wise, you might be better served finding another game.

There in lies the challenge.....what other game? heh

I've tried Warhammer.....warmed over WOW w/ public quests

    I've tried Aion...warmed over WOW w/ Wings

    I've tried Rift...warmed over WOW w/ Polish

It's that basic level based, gear progression, quest driven model thats just been done to death.  In hindsight, Blizzard making MMOs accessible (and by accessible I mean even a Caveman can do it) with the themepark model succeeded in getting millions of people (who wouldn't have given traditional MMOS more than 15 minutes) playing MMO-lite content......but in the long run successfully BURNED OUT millions of players on that very same model.

I've been looking for that shade since Ultima Online. LOL

Its interesting that many gamers chase that same game exerience that pulled them into the genere....yet rarely find it again.

Well, you never know untill you find it. I never knew I love MMOs so much untill I played WoW, but sadly, it spoiled me forever onwards. Now, i'm looking for something completely diferent and hoping to discover another thing I never knew I loved.

Oh for sure....and thats why I've given just about every main stream title (and some independent ones) a shot over the last 10 or so years.

It's just that over that time period, I'm noticing a trend in how the games are developed.....and it doesn't look all that good for those folks looking for something different than the themepark type model that WOW has made so popular.

The precident has been set that you need to spend MILLIONS of dollars to develop & launch a proper game, and the big publishers feel that appealing to smaller niche audiences would not be economical.  Hence....why you've seen WOW like MMOs ad nausium over the last 5 or so years.

My first break from the game was also a loong one, and when i came back it was with a friend, it was infinitely more fun that way. Eventually, it was just too much of the samey thing for too long, but as long as it's fun, ride it and ride it hard.

Heh I did the same thing. . it was fun for about 10 levels.   The best way to do this would be to join a guild that is doing the same thing.  They come along from time to time.  Or play something like DDO and join a perma-death guild. . if your character dies you re-roll etc.

Chasing the dragon...  Sometimes literally, lol.

I just did this same thing, only level 12 but enjoying it so far.  Never played a gnome past 20ish, never played a mage past 30, and haven't done 1-60 alliance side since release.  Also reading all the quest text and duoing with a buddy who, despite being an MMO junkie, has somehow managed to avoid ever playing WoW.  We're planning on locking at 19 and doing some PVP before we move on.  I just want the fun to last till SWTOR comes out, then that should hold me over till GW2 which will hopefully last me 4+ years like WoW did back in the day.
