Is it worth it...

Hey I'm the big noob here @ mmorpg :p just needed some advice. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything (good or bad) about Dark Age Of Camalot. I've been to EB Games, and the guys there said this is an excellent game to get started in (I am also fairly new to MMORPG's in general). So I wanted to see if I could get any advice on weather or not it is worth it to pay for this game, or to play it rather, because if it's not so great then downloading it and then finding someone with a credit card would be too much work for a game that's not worth the time. Just want to hear what people who have played it think about it. Thanks! :)

I used to play DAOC, I played for quite awhile and in my opinion it is a great game, one of the best of it's kind, however I would not recommend it to you right now anyway. As a newbie it will take an insane time investment before you could ever even step foot in RvR warfare. But there is hope yet, they are talking about making a casual server, in which case it will be perfect for newbies looking to get into DAOC, I strongly suggest waiting for that server if you're going to play DAOC. Just check the camelotherald.com for updates on it, in the meantime you should give Lineage a try image  It's free to download and you get a one week free trial to try it out, so if you think it sucks you've spent no money so no biggie but of all the mmorpgs I've played it my FAV, if you do try it out make sure to join the LoA server and post your character name here, I'll help you out, goodluck to you whatever you choose.

Hey great thanks a lot, I really appreciate the advice. Is there a difference between Lineage 1 and Lineage 2 in terms of price to play/purchase? Also thanks for offering your help. I'll check out lineage and see how it goes from there :) Thanks again...

Lineage 2 you must buy the game first, then it has a monthly fee. Lineage 1 is free to download and has a monthly fee. I've played them both and I honestly can't stand L2, it sickens me that they even try to call it a sequel, it's totally different from L1, L2 is like a korean Everquest with PvP.

DAOC is not like any of the games out there, including Lineage.

The questions is if DAOC is right for you?  What some people consider good others consider bad.  Although the MMORPG forums are better than most, on most forums of games you will find nothing but a bunch of players who think they are the majority in the world that complain about this change or that and how the company ruined the game, etc.  Essentially bitter people who act like children because they did not get their way.  So asking these types of questions are going to be difficult because you will have those complainers and then someone will have to give the extreme of the other view in an attempt to balance everything.

I will put it this way.  What you might take to be the 'down' side of the game.  When starting out there will be fewer people to group with.  So if you are the grouping type then you might be disapointed unless you are willing to work for a group.  When the game has expanded out so much in terms of content and new players have decreased so much it will look like there are not a lot of low level characters.  You must actually use your looking for group command and be willing to send people tells for groups or simply ask advice.  You will find that DAOC has about the best in game community around.

Server populations are low on most of the servers.  This will be fixed soon with clustering.

Mythic is dedicated itself to making the new player experience as easy as possible.  Most current players do not know that because we have never played through this stuff before.  They are also adding new quests and plans to make it even easier to get into the game.  Personally when I started when the game first came out I had zero problems, but anyway . . .

You can RvR starting at level 1 now if you really want.  You can level in RvR now.  Here is how it works:  They have battlegrounds where you can fight players of the other realms that are around your level.  You get experience, money, and realm points for doing so.  Realm points allow you to train in additional abilities.  The battlegrounds are usually full of people starting around level 20.

You get free levels as long as you earn at least one free level in the game during a set period of time (2-6) days.  After you get to level 50 you get unlimted free level 20 or 30 characters.

You have 8 character slots, 10 if you get catacombs.

You have a co-op server - that is a server where there is not RvR - where you can play all the classes and realms.  You have a complete PvP server with no realms, but individual groups fighting it out.

You have artificats which are powerful cool looking magical items that can actually gain levels.

You can own your own house.  You can make your own armor/weapons.  You have have them enchanted and those items are usually the best in the game.

With the latest expansion the graphics are awsome, espically in the new zones.  They have redone their character models.  On the down side there was not nearly as much customization and players have been expecting and not as much as on other games.  They will be fixing that issue in the next two patches - one in Feb and one in March.

Highly customizable user interface.  It is the best one I have ever used.  You can even design your own if you want.

The Realm versus Realm combat is probably the best out there.  Well since WoW doesn't really have theirs fully up yet I can say it is the best.

At this point the only issues that I can think of that are any big down side is that crafting is still a grind - but honestly doing it that way is the only way not to ruin the economy for the moment.  And that many servers/realms have low populations.  The population issue will be resolved in mid-Feb.

There is high PvE content and for the moment the best RvR content.  Mythic has added the most free content to any mmorpg in history - two free expansions last year.

If you really want to experience what it is like, then I would suggest you buy the platnium edition of the game AND the Catacombs expansion.  The newer classes are awsome, you get the best graphics, and the new zones make it so easy to level.

BTW either I totally suck or Grim is just so much better than me.  I do admit that part of the problems were not remembering where to level, but with my vamp I think it took about 10 hours to get to level 20.  Just grouping with my girlfriend it is taking me about 90 minutes to get a level in the mid-20's.

Well thanks to everyone for their help.. I know it's not the greatest idea to ask someone for help on a forum, because no matter where you go, everyone will have a different opinion, biased or not. Not everyone likes one certain game and that's pretty understandable, but I can definitely get a good idea on how to proceed when trying to figure out which game will be great for me. I was surprised to see how much depth is involved in daoc, and aside from the information I got from these forums, I have also head a lot of good things about daoc and that it is a good game despite a few "shortcomings" whatever those may be. More than once I've been walking past the game box and wanted to pick it up :) Now I can have a better idea of which game to blow my mulah on. Thanks again and hopefully soon I'll be picking up a copy of the game, maybe I can find out if one of my buddies has it so i can fool around with the game a bit, but i have a pretty good feeling I'm going to be picking this game up. image

Grim you must not have read my post, I like DAOC, it's probably my second favorite behind Lineage 1. It is a very good game but the fact is at this point I would not recommend it to newbies, as I said the time investment needed to get your character competitive for RvR war is massive, anyone who says differently is either clueless or lieing. When/If Mythic adds the casual server(s)  I would recommend to DAOC to a newbie, until then there is no way I would.

Ok, I'm not one to normally reply to things like this but I will this time. I have literally played the game sense the beginning. Yep, sense the first week all the way through the exsansions. As mentioned before, it has good sides and bad sides.

If you are completely new, your best bet would be to go with the co-op server in the beginning. It's a no pvp server but you can play any class, any realm, any time you want. It'll help you get a feel for the game and test out which realm/class/race you like the most. Once you've fully decided, move onto a large server.

I currently play Albion/Lancelot. I have a 50 necromancer there name Magmuss(Necros are the best pl class in the game.) I can hook you up, get you some gear, and some pocket change to play around with. If i'm not on him, send a tell to Uglykid.

In the end, try it out. If you like it, keep playing. If not, find something else. Gods know if one mmo doesn't suit your fancy there are 15 others out there that might.

newbinator hmm i didnt mean anything about you and DAoC (sorry if i sayed something wrong). JulianDracos  this time you out done your selfimage  what i tryed to say that its not so hard for new player to start that game.

P.S. btw Diesel021878 try to lay vampiir and try to repeat that necr is best pl char (stiil best if you whant to farm some arts)

lol sorry, I misunderstood image  DAOC isn't hard starting out but what I'm saying is to get 50, get ML's, arti's, and a decent RR it takes crazy amounts of time unless you are an uber powergamer who plays 24/7. I love DAOC and I will probably roll me a new character once the casual server comes out but for now I'm not playing since I don't like being an RP cow for those that play 10 times more than me, I don't mind being out skilled, but losing everytime because I don't play 24/7 and have the goodies the powergamers do is not fun, so we'll see how the casual server turns out.

My problem with the game now is too much content, too many high level players, and no game cards. Plus my account is in limbo.

Type Seed Game into your search engine. Go to the game's website and learn about it. It may be the best game you've continued to ignore.

You see here is my issue with people saying that you will never be competitive in RvR w/o a bot, or w/o the ML, or without really anything that will take you forever and a day to do it.  People do it all the time!

Think about it.  People make new toons all the time.  People are making the new classes and leveling them up.  They will end up going out to RvR w/o doing most if not all of the ML.  Bots I think are overrated.  My NS has taken out many toons with bots allbeit often I nearly died.

So I really do not think it will take forever to be competivie in RvR.  I will put it this way, unless you are in a good group or a natural you will most likely get your ass kicked a lot when you first start going out.  But you learn, get better groups, get realm points, etc and things will start to work out better.  Not to mention by the time you get to 50 there will be server clustering, and they will start to make ToA easier.

So I don't really think even at the high end of the game it is too bad for new players.  Just don't get upset when you get your butt kicked a lot at the begining.

As for too much content and too many high level players, unless they did server whipes and never expanded they game this will always happen.  I call it the suburban effect.  People move into farther and farther out with the new zones.  So people spread out giving the game a dead look to it.  So you can either just get used to that way things are, or keep moving to the newest game and starting over.

Since 99% of the games suck I would much rather stick with a good game than waste money on something like EQ, SWG, L2, Shadowbane, Horizons, etc.
