Pre 2.0  (the upcoming big expac/relaunch) would be needed to invest  a lot time  playing to catch up to vets paper skill wise if you good on FPS twitch skills this time will be greatly reduced. Also prepare to also PvE to have the gold for the offline skilling system. If you do this you don't need to worry about afk-macro which btw is not allowed.

Didn't tried earthrise so can't help you here but DF's PvP is very thrilling, fast paced and almost breathtaking.

first off might as well get this out, i am a darkfall fanboi and because of that my opinion is going to be a little different then someone who hates this game but oh well here i go. first no it isn't that hard to get caught up to the vets in darkfall for instance if you start the game by lvling a twohanded skill(any they all have advantages and disadvantages and dispite what most will say there are usefull 2 hand skills that arn't greatsword or greataxe), then you lvl lesser magic to 50 greater magic to 25 an you will get spellchanting. lvl your spellchanting up and find a buddy to grind with that has spellchanting as well and you will close the stat gap with vets fast(at around lvl 20-40  my spellchanting buff would buff around 20-40 to every individual stat and last for about 2 minutes).

one draw back most experience in darkfall is one way darkfall varies greatly from earthrise and that is socially. if you arn't accoustomed doing things independantly of others, darkfall is going to scare you. the world of darkfall is pretty large and open(there are no paths to follow where mobs get slightly harder as you go like earthrise, instead you will be forced to test/poke/prod all the mobs you meet beyond the goblin spawns that surround factional cities)

another aspect of darkfall that differs from earthrise(at least from what i played of earthrise before i quit a week after launch) in earthrise you get quest then as you run from the starting areas you will progressively encounter the mobs you need for the quests. in darkkfall the only use you will find in doing any quest is they will pin point whatever mob you have to hunt for said quest. so if your bored and find a quest for a mob you want to test might as well pick it up to get the beacon but the reward is almost always going to blow. in my opinion once you get accoustomed to your world and your style of play(arrow, magic, or melee) avoid all quest. i actually saw someone rage/quit darkfall last night because" why does every game have to be a wow clone all there is to do in this game is quest quest quest im sick of games where all you do is quest." i almost died reading this considering how usless and hard to find quest are in darkfall.

now as far as afk/macroing goes, they implemented a ofline lvling system that takes ingame gold and pumps whatever skill you want to lvl. macroing up spells is going to be stightly faster then the offline lvling plus you will get to lvl the individual spells instead of just whole schools of magic. i would assume you can replicate most macros with just about any macroing gamepad(i got a nostromo n52te). gms will warn i want to say 2 times before a permanent ban gets kicked down. and if you macro while at your comp say while your watching tv and are able to reaspond to a gm tells then macroing is perfectly legal. oh and when your not playing you will want to stay logged in get naked and swim or run against a wall in secluded areas to afk quickness str and vit.

last but not least my favorite aspect of darkfall is there is allways something to do. if you tired of fighting mobs you can craft. tired crafting you can explore(random player tombstone and choas chest will be scattered about to reward you; ) ) tired of exploring go back to a player city or faction city and harvest reasourses. everything you do in darkfall lvls skills and stats riding mounts, running, swimming, getting hit, hittting stuff, crafting stuff, harvesting stuff, shit even hitting other players lvls you. lol you could go in a corner and jump and it l will lvl stuff for you. as i said before there is always something to do in darkfall.

There is no thrill like the PvP in darkfall, hunting others, or being hunted.  Much adrenaline.  THe biggest thing vets ahve going for them is experience.  You can get up to a competetive level in a few months.  Game is a blast give it a try.  If you play on US send Timothias FearsNoEvil a tell for gear and advice.

I only saw earth rise videos. Its slow as hell. I use to follow that game, but these videos makes me wonna puke.

Il say one thing tho. If you want to play DF before 2.0, then by default, id have to give it to earth rise even after what i said. The grind is still insane in df. You wont be ready before 3-4 months. When i say ready, i mean pvp viable atleast. Even as a destroyer that needs few stuff, it will still take you 3 months atleast since you will need to either swim in front of a wall or meditate your quickness to 100 before you can really start doing some damage. Then, you will need enough STR and VIT to unlock passive skills.

If you want to be a mage, forget it. there's no mages, just hybrids. Thats mean, you will have to grind everything to 75-100 including macroing. Destroyers dont need to macro, but they need to either stay offline/meditating for 3 months or swim into a wall all day and night. You do not pay a game to not play so do not take that option.

That all is changing for 2.0

Starting now has the advantage of all the starter areas being somewhat peaceful.  I was actually quite shocked with the amount of progress and things accomplished one can do now in the starter aread.

Most of the population that is riding out the end of 1.0 seem fairly occupied with their clan holdings and higher end content.  There still are gank patrols going through the starter areas, but its not as frequent as in the past.

Top that off with a lack of other players camping tower-range resources, and noob mob spawns, with the added bonus of a lot of crafters looking to give new players bags of starter loot....makes for a decent time to start and get aquainted with the game and community.

However once you get past the starter areas, and start visiting more difficult spawns and areas, people start to become more common.  Good thing about that is by then you at least have a basic understanding of how to play.  Before when the game was packed, you needed to deal with frequent visits from skilled players preying on the new players.  Now it seem when new players do get pk'ed a lot of times theyll get rezzed by the pker and set off on their way.

But yeah, under the 1.0 system, even if you wanted to go magekiller (which restricts the use of most magic) your still going to need to grind out the unblocked magic schools, and then use them in encounters...which to me seems retarded, since you obviously dont want to be a mage if you choose that route, yet still must take advantage of mage debuffs and some DOT skills to really be effective.

got to say i laughed pretty hard at seing this post. one funny part about darkfall is it attracts alot of "pvp" minded players who don't play a game so they can just die, they want to kill others. in darkfall it doesn't aways work out for them consider just like life there is always a bigger fish. "it will still take you 3 months atleast since you will need to either swim in front of a wall or meditate your quickness to 100 before you can really start doing some damage. " most players i kill tend to think i have 100 stats and maxed out def stats i have 4 stats above 60 and 1 of those is 65.something my ignore pain is 33 my def is 66.something. i don't think ive ever encountered a single player with 100+ stats outside of player cities, seiges, or dope group mobs. yes you will need months of work to be lvled up enough to be usefull in a seige or defence of a city, and you should probably avoid the center of the continent for a few months but if your trying to get the feel for a game and learn the basics now would be a great time to do it.

the poster before me said something about magekiller/destroyer and the few skills you would need. its your transfers(stam2health,mana2stam,and health2mana), pestilence and witchesbrew from witchcraft, and spellchanting.pretty much all of these can be done easily while grinding anything(bow, melee, magic). your transfers take resin mandrake and sulfur all of these can be harvested resin from trees, sulfur from or nodes, and mandrake from bushes. carry about 25 of each regeant while going out to grind and you will lvl them fast, bring food along and you probably won't ever have to use your rest skill.

Most people fail at being competative not by their stats, but in what they use, how they use it, and what they do during a pvp encounter.

Also, the real pros with maxed stats...your not going to see them as a new player or mid ranged player, and they are not going to be interested in killing you for a few hundred gold and jacking you r40 weapons and plate armor.

A LOT of what youve heard about darkfall is either ancient news from its lauch (which was a hot mess regarding griefing) or overblown exadurations.  Its got a hard learning curve to start out fresh, it takes a bit of effort and know how to get competative stats, then it takes much practice to utilize what you have in a pvp enounter.  Thats all, nothing diffrent from other games, except your not guranteed to be good in a month simply based on stats/gear/what skills you can use...you gotta know how to put it all to use...you dont learn that swimming against a wall overnight.

  • AluviusAluvius Member Posts: 288

That's certainly correct however the sad truth is that you ALSO need to do things like swimming afk against a wall when you log out at night in order to be competitive.  I tried DF and liked it alot except for two things, the horrible UI/controls and the need to afk swim/bloodwall magic skills.  You just can't argue that one can work up your stats and skills simply by pvping.   Especially magic skills since you'd quickly run out of reagents and spend most of your time farming them ... well which you do anyway, but at least with bloodwalling you use them efficiently heh.

I'm definitely going to check out Darfkall 2.0 though.

    To the OP.

I played DF from the start and I also fell for EarthRise when it launched so here's my take on things and I jhope it helps you out.

EarthRise was a MASSIVE fail IMO the game was half ass made and the dev's can never seem to get a patch right without breaking something or bringing back old bugs. They don't test patches very well IMO and it's really sad because the game could be great but falls very short.Myabe if it's still around in a year it would be better but I wouldn't bet on it.

Darkfall is a great game and has come a long way since launch , it's still a grind and yes you would have to macro to get 'competitive" but the PvP in that game is second to none IMO.With DF 2.0 on the horizon things are going to change a lot and there are talks about a server wipe but with gaining the knowledge of the game now could only help you in 2.0 and if they don't wipe you would be that much ahead.

My suggestion would be to give DF a try and get into a good clan , make friends and learn the game .If you like risk for reward PvP I think you'll like it .Goodluck.

catching up to vets? Is this an EvE thread? Nevermind..I played darkfall for about 14 months and it was a great game. If you are a solo type player, you might not like it as much. I have been gone for sometime now, but you don't HAVE to afk/macro..but it helped. I swam/ran into a wall sometimes over night. I also did a simple script that cast heal self and something else..can't remember.

Having said all that, I found the world engrossing and a tingling in my senses when I would travel the world. If you are careful, you can easily ambush others and kill them. That also applies to you. In retrospect, I absolutely loved the fact that quests weren't an important part of the game...b/c I hate quests 9/10 times. Open World PvP, group oriented goals and no quests...perfect for me.

The thing that killed it for me, sadly was all the goddamn bunnyhopping...which I saw in some of the vids of Earthrise as well. I think you should be able to hop up onto terrain, etc. The amount of jumping, whirlwind, wild swinging polearm using alfar were pathetic.

Unless it's changed, the hitboxes were a bit different for the larger races...Dogs being the worst. I was an Ork, and I had to swing DOWN sometimes to hit alfar and the occasional dwarf I fought. As in if I wouldn't hit them at ALL, if I didn't swing down. I guess you could call that realism, but that was out the window with all the ridiculous bunnyhopping. You literally could bunnyhop the entire fight..it was just gamebreaking for me.

If they ever fix that, I'll resub tomorrow. Good luck in deciding.

Playing: BF4/BF:Hardline, Subnautica 7 days to die

    Waiting on: World of Darkness(sigh)
Interested in: better games in general

Unable to hop up on terrain?  You serious?

I agree the FPS style movment during combat sucks, granted they are changing that all in 2.0...not really a game wrecker the fact that epople can jump and you can get up on some cool places to ambush others....even been jumped by some guy camping up in a tree..

As per the big races, i can be hard to see the smaller races in tight quarters, and new character models should fix that, however it wasnt that bad, you dont have to look completely down to hit a small race while playing a big race.

Also...pole arms just have a wider arc..or aoe swing, than other weapons, reach is determined by race...so when playing a bigger race, especially with a pole arm, keeping a distance is key, and an advantage, while smaller races have diffrent advantages/disadvantages...its a trade off, this isnt a FPS where everything is equal.

However i will say its quite sad to see someone give up an otherwise satisfying game over something so trivial as being able to jump...perhaps 2D games and point and click movement only games are more to your liking, since they dont have that immersion runing effect of the ability to jump.  And again, new physics and momentum, along with crosshair wobble in 2.0 should make jumping during combat a losing strategy.

Really i cant believe someone would stop playing a game they like because of jumping though...thats crazy petty....

I played the trial for a little bit less than a week and basically the things that come to mind the most is the grind. And to all the players above me who say you DON'T need to macro? wtf are you srsbro? Half of the kids on this shit macro, and if you DON'T macro do you know how many hours and hours on end you'd have to play to even remotely catch up to older characters? Honestly, I definitely did enjoy the game. The FPS combat in the game is pretty fun I suppose, but I found it sort of stupid that you really can't dodge too much (at least not in pve anyways). But everything in the game right now is just a straight up grind and grinding isn't fun in any game when you have to do it as long as you do in DF. And to all you players who keep saying junk like DF2.0 is right around the corner.. stop spreading lies. DF2.0 or whatever you want to call it probably won't even come out until much much later. Maybe even another whole year? Now that's ridiculous. And to whoever above said that older players don't run around and gank new players? Another lie. I'd have to say most of the players I've seen in the game are reds, which means they WILL kill you if they just see you in the open. Not because they want your worthless equipment, but to grief you. GL in deciding to play, honestly if DF2.0 is what it's hyped to be then I'd say it's worth a try. Otherwise, I would say avoid the current DF as the grind just makes the game unbearable.

  • MaGicBushMaGicBush Member UncommonPosts: 689

Eh, back when I played last year vets tapered off on ganking noobs from what I saw. Or if they did attack me(or others) most would leave your equipment and not touch it, I even became friends with quite a few this way. The key is not to send them a tell insulting them, if you do this they will take your stuff and repeatedly grief rightfully so. If you actually try to fight back most of the time they will be shocked and then help you if your new. Of course there is always the bad apples in the crowd though.
