I was just looking at some video of Raiderz online and it got me curious, alot of MMO's like Raiderz, Aion, most F2P like Vindictus as well as some other P2P games keep putting in these gigantic oversized extremely stupid (IMO) looking weapons.
I was just curious what the draw is, is it some kind of fetish or what? I just dont get what the appeal is.

Most people play games for a certain amount of escapism, and of those people, a good number who are interested in a fantasy setting want fantastical things.
There are varying degrees of fantasy/sci-fi. There's grittier, more "realistic" low fantasy like Conan and The Witcher, and there's high fantasy like Aion and WoW. Not everyone is going to like everything, and if you're one of those people who doesn't like the over the top items, then I can see why you'd be unhappy with many games out there.
I reckon that makes since, and yeah, I prefer the grittier more realistic look like Conan. I guess everyone likes what they like...

Maybe some guys want giant oversized swords for the same reason some middled aged men buy expensive pointless sports cars :P
im guessing a big part of it too, is just lazy designing. A lot of the weapons in WoW started looking stupid but for some reason, got "bigger".
Lol, compensation.
Lazy design, IMO it just looks a little pathetic. To some extent it makes me laugh I only really care for gameplay so in reality it is not something to burst a blood vessel over just lazy.

Sorcery must persist, the future is the Citadel
There is a few reasons for it.
Cultural: For some reasons does it seems like people in Japan, China, and Korea often like oversized weapons, or they do at least often appears in mangas/Manhwas from those countries as well as games.
Estitical: Bigger weapons are easier to see and many people think they look cool when you animate them.
Some kind of complex: Maybe some people just got a small **** and want to overcompensate.
Personally do I think that they are silly, besides polearms and lances that are supposed to be that big. I wanyt my weapons and armors to be realistic. I on the other hand are rather annoyed that my male characters must wear earrings and similar stuff like a girl or be punished for it.... Can you imagine Conan with a full MMO jewelry set? I can't, just pimps.
I wouldn't say its MMO lately, Final Fantasy 7 had Cloud with a monster sword, think it's more of an eastern cultural thing.
^ I think Cloud set the trend for the over sized sword honestly.
Partly, but some older Japanese manga and anime had them even before that.
But in this case it is the Japanese fault. Funny enough are there a few Chinese real swords that looks rather oversized.
It's not the size of your sword.... it's the motion of the...
ok, it really IS the size of your sword.
Ask Kim Kardashian... she's not marrying that lumberjack simply for his Blue Ox.
No bitchers.
As every woman will tell you, size does matter.
MMO's and their gear are not known for their realism, so artists take liberty with how large a weapon a person can wield and face it, one handing a great sword looks far cooler than a swining a fencing foil.
I used to like DAOC back in the day because the gear was more proportional to real life so perhaps that set my future preference.

My guess is that the weapons represent more than “weapons”. They are symbolic of power and the will of the warrior.
I imagine there is a lot in manga/anime “what have you” that is representational and has other meaning besides what is no the surface.

yea, even 2 handed swords shouldn''t be more than what, 5 or 6 feet. If you have a sword that is 10 feet and your 6 feet, your going to have a problem even wielding it. In a long drawn out fight, people with more realistic swords at 3 or 4 feet in length will eventually pwn you because you'll tire out. Even in dynasty warriors they had these huge swords.
I wonder if even CONAN could wield a 10 foot sword, and if so, for how long? Talking about CONAN, I'm wondering if we will see any huge weapons in that movie coming out soon. Probably not. even in the original Conan, you had huge weapons, but they weren't totally unrealistic.
==========================
The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
Speaking of Conan movies, the prop swords in there were made of aluminum. They had to be or they would have been too heavy for the actors to swing during shooting.
Thats just a polearm with a blade attached to it. In the west we had halberds which were similar. In weight its still way less then a claymore or any large medieval 2hnded sword.
While games use hammers with a solid metal head as large as the player's head and wield it as 1hnd weapon (just compare a sledgehammer for size and try to wield it ).
I would like to see a game that uses Anime size weapons , but then with realistic physics So that when someone swings one of those huge swords and misses, needs help to stop spinning
But that's only true for 'humans'. In most of these MMOs, the players are more equivalent to demigods, so weilding gigantic overweight weapons isn't a problem for them.
I don't like oversized weeapons in mmorpg's or any games for that matter.I tend to avoid this kind of games.
I prefer more realistic looking and sized weapons , even if this is fantasy world.
I agree i didnt see many big swords in video games until FF7 rolled along in 1997

That's one of the earliest video game examples of a giant sword that I can recall as well. That is, the Buster Sword was very noteworthy and everyone seemed to notice and talk about how big it was. Either way, it's not a recent phenomenon in the video game world by any means.
I have been travelling along the Yangzhe River when I was much younger and hit upon the small local museums housing the tombs of old day war heroes. I have seen the weapons in those museums, they ARE that large.
Likewise I have spent nights in caster/keep converted hotels in Germany, and have seen 2 hand swords that are almost as tall as me (I am short). So no kidding, there are such weapons.
Of course, these weapons are wielded by the strongest, tallest and most powerful warrior/general/soldiers of their era, and they are mean to kill a heavily armed enemy in a strike. They are not for us.
Why oversized weapons? Some of it is partly an art-style choice, anime isn't the only medium to have overly large weapons (its just the most popular at the moment so the easiest to reference). It's about visibily and emphasis. If you look at cartoons or fantasty and sci-art you'll see that the things they want to emphasize are made "larger than life" some how, not just in size mind you, but they are "glowier", larger or more wicked or complex looking than a normal item. It doesn't even have to be an item, often character builds or charactistics are emboldened or skewed some how to set the character apart from all the background characters.
Giant weapson in MMOs are because in most of the standard MMO game types we play we end up really spending all our time trying to get Better Lootz. Being large and extra glowie makes them stand out from normal loot or just sets the tone for you not feeling mundane. I'm not saying this is the way to go, it can either be a cool or lazy way to try to set player characters apart and make them look and feel special.
Personally I don't want my characters to look plain, I want some style to them. I also want to feel some thought was given to what I have to choose from though, not just a bunch of guady things to slap on. More of the standard MMO games are starting to allow more customization though, and I think that is really what we need, everyone has their preference after all.
1. Aesthetics. In particular, the Eastern manga/anime aesthetic. Most of the games mentioned in the OP are Eastern games brought to the Western market, or heavily influenced by Eastern games/anime.
2. Phallic symbol. Little weewee. Giant sword.
3. Demographic. The same reason that full plate on a male character translates into pasties, and a plate thong on a female character. The games, for whatever reason, cater to adolescent males, even if they're 30. Many Eastern games are particularly egregious on this one. The look of Lineage II, for example, though it's hardly the only one, or the worst offender of the bunch.
Gah.
I hate oversized weapons just as much as:
- every woman is extremely busty (man games, even in the old Baldurs Gate every woman was extremely huge)
- women models with stick thin arms (Vanguard has these, and they annoy me without end)
- unrealistic armor aka "bikini chain mail" (again mostly with women, men usually get realistic armor)
