hey look its another carbon copy of world of warcraft but THIS time they set it in the star wars universe , MAN oh MAN i cant wait!!!

    /insertsarcasm....

real open world sandbox mmorpgs are dead people , might as well play games like fall out new vegas and elder scrolls there what mmorpgs are supposed to be but arent...

sadly things are only gonna get more easy button , the largely in  depth fun sand box mmos of the late 90s early 2000's  IE: daoc , eq 1 , asherons call , everquest 2...  are over which is maybe a good thing for ppl who started with games like world of warcraft but for the rest of us veterans who have been at it since UO  we have basically just been sitting back watching the industry turn into a greedy passionless money grind where all the games resemble the newest flavor of the season and originality is out the window!

i mean cmon do we really need another failed starwars mmo? ... ugh good luck with this one ppl

This is what makes me wanna cry. I don't want a game where my father will hold my hand... If I do stupid things I should be hurt, if I jump off a cliff I should die.
    Whats up with the handholding?

Their goal is millions of players, not thousands of players. Things like killing your character are counter to that goal. It's a game, not a virtual world.

Sorry but what has this anything to do whit millions of ppl you dont think that ppl playing swtor anyway if your companion dies.

Same general idea. They do not want to make people angry at the game. They are avoiding the idea of punishing the players because being punished isn't fun. Since their goal is to make a game and not a virtual world they can safely skip punishing players by letting their companions get killed.

If you look at the movies, bit players got killed, but companions didn't. They got electrically fried or incapacitated, but they never seemed to die. Maybe it's a law of the Star Wars universe. Only main characters and bit characters can die. Companions can't die. It's built into the quantum fabric of their universe.

    ** edit **
Casual games draw more players than non-casual games. It seems like the more casual a game is, in regards to player punishment, the more players it draws. Bioware wants more players. So, more hand holding.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I would have hoped that stuff as core as the map would have been nailed down months ago... hey ho.

Maybe Bioware DID think they were nailed down months ago, but based on tester feedback, felt changes were needed?

Yes, this. It also seems to me that much of this is tweaking, and things like maps are one of the last things you want to put in an MMO.

Yes, there is an acheivement system in the game. Plenty of things to do and see if you take the time to explore. Lots of things to interact with in the enviroment as well. I know people are upset that you can't sit down in chairs and do other things of that nature, but at the same time, there are plaques on statues you can interact with, and corpses of creatures as well. They will add entries into your codex, as well as give you useful info about the game and story.

I think they mean doing things that will ruin your overall gameplay (losing companions), not things that temporarily set you back. Jumping off a cliff just means a respawn, losing a companion permanently could derail your personal story and/or invalidate all the energy/credits/whatever you've poured into said companion.

But this is a themepark, and there is a bit of hand-holding in all of those.

what about hitting a respawn button as well if ur companion dies? or BW give us a special skill to revive companions? at least that gives more immersion than giving them straight-forward inmortality

it could be a nice idea ;)

Actually in combat you are defeated and then resuced, you or your companion don't die. Thus they aren't immortal in battle. You don't get the option to kill them in dialog thus doesn't lend to mortality.

Killing your companion is suppose to be a really evil choice that at first was suppose to be the point of no return of evil. Thus being able to revive them negates the choice. Now your just killing your companion for giggles. Makes the choice irrelavent. If you allow them to kill them and not revive them to make the choice important you gimp overall progression.

You can incompasitate your companions in carbonite for a time if you want which is sort of the same thing without breaking the immersive of being able to bring people back from dying.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Well no surprise they mention voice acting is piece of cake,i already mentioned that several times.

As for the aged old excuse that crops up yet again,we hear the "to reach out to more people" again.I heard this over and over with WOW.

There is two things need to be said to that and why it is BS.

1 If they TRULY were after the MOST possible fans, this would also be released on xbox 360 AND PS3 and it is simply not,so i call lies.

2 There is NOTHING to stop them from making a low res and a hi res textures pack.I know two versions of the game is asking too much ,but it is also possible to make a DX9c AND a DX11 version as well. The TRUTH is COST,it is not to reach out to more players. There is also more that goes in to graphics than JUST textures, there is the architecture and detail in the game, objects, animations ,particle effects TONS more involved and SWTOR falls short in all areas.

What i would accept is if the dev tells the truth then if their game is turning a good profit as Wow is,then make an updated texture pack for hi resolution. You can also have your staff go back in and improve maps, basically make the game as good as it can be.However you know what really happens, the staff is immediately told to start on the next xpack.

Yes i am a very hard critique, someone who accepts mediocre gaming won't mind this game, but these devs know darn well they can deliver a LOT better effort and still profit a very tidy sum.Bioware is not alone, you can expect the same thing from A-Net as well, cutting corners everywhere to save cost.Yes this is 100x better than Eve was released and that game has 600k subs, however i am not one of those supporting poor game releases.I didn't even support my fave FF series.
