OMG? 245 players online? That's even less than the amount of players we had on siege ground today in Lineage II's Inadril siege...
/sarcasm_off
I wonder when SOE will put this game offline. 245 players can't raise enough money to keep the servers running I think...
People eat sh***, millions of flies cant be wrong.
If I would do what most people do, I would read bildzeitung, spend my evenings watching TV, and eat burgers at McDonalds.
Also, L2 is an ASIAN game. So - asia has what ? Now about 4 billion people ? Each China and India have much over a billion by themselves alone, and theres other countries there, too.
And besides, your argument is stupid. The cost of RUNNING a MMORPG are linear with the cost of players who play. Every player causes network traffic cost and support cost.
It is DEVELOPING a MMORPG that doesnt depend upon the number of players.
So yeah, as SOE doesnt have to pay any license for Vanguard, they can run that game ad infinum.
So let me guess. you are content with game just running and don't care for content updates or expansions? are you sure it is him who is making stupid arguments? Vanguard is a perfect example that an MMORPG indeed depend upon the number of players. Why would a company sink money into developing more content for MMO when they are not making any profit on it?

there is a lot of content and the game play is such that it gives something a little different. There ARE people in the game. And I've met many who really like Vanguard and are content to be there.
That says a lot to me.
I play somewhat casually but I keep a sub because I enjoy coming into the game when I do have time. Sometimes it's just screwing aruond with new classes, sometimes it's setting a challenge for myself.
Not everyone requires new content all the time. Heck, i've been playign oblvioin for years now. Same with morrowind. Sometimes the setting is just "good enough".
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Im just gonna go ahead and say that this guy must not be on the Telon server because it is booming with people. Come join us on the Telon server. I got a buddy in the EU getting around the same ping as me and my buddies here in the states. Come join us.
Vanguard is a seriously good game now. You just have to find the class thats for you and find some people to play with. If your new to the game join a guild, I recommend Twighlyte Song I think is what there called a huge guild on the Telon server. Don't be discouraged if you get a class you dont like just reroll until you find the right one for you. I think I went through 8 characters before I decided upon the Shaman. Good old school game, hope SoE gives it the attention it deserves. They did say there were coming out with 2 updates soon so we will see.

VG also has years of content for a new player. Not months like most mmos now a days but years. Hell, in all time VG has been around there is only 1 guild that has completed all the raid content. So, yea and can complain about content if your 1 of the members of Veracity. If your not then it doesn't really make much sense.

Yup the Telon server. Call a day. Any day of the week. I'll log on and give the numbers.
You can "pretend" the server is busy with people all you like, just to see if you can lure some unsuspecting forum goer into subbing. It just isn't a fact.

True "booming" might be a bit over optimistic, but the population is on the up swing. How long? Who knows.
By all rights this game should be dead, just like all MMO's released too early (like most of them today).
However some people didn't give up it, and today it's a solid old school MMO.
You don't need to be "tricked" into a sub. Get the free trial, or check it out if you have an Access Pass.

Is this true? Can someone confirm that only 1 guild has ever completed all of the raid content. That seems absolutely amazing (in a good way). If it is true, is it true because there is just so much content that most guilds can't finish it, or is it true because of another reason?
How much content does Vanguard have compared to EQ1?
Yepp is true just one guild and there is a HUGE amount of content in every lvl range I for example atm I am playing a new char when I go under the lfg window and I watch the dungeons in my range I can chose one of 17 dungeons 17 DUNGEONS for lvl 11 and I'm pretty sure with the coming udates even the most hardcoreraiders will have enough content again
If we could keep this updated for a couple weeks or so, I'd be interested in pop count on EU primetime (lets say CET) myself.
Two weeks ago when I was leveling a new char on Isle of Dawn, there were constantly over 50 people on IoD alone each and every night during EU primetime (CET).
The game itself was amasing, though I agree the launch was bad, not WoW bad but bad non the less, then again.. Microsoft is a horid start for any mmo.
The game indeed was released too early, SOE should have put their footdown instead of letting their investors force a release.
Granted the game wasnt running all that bad on a top of the line computer.
Sigil couldnt get the game.. fixed and when SOE brought in their own team(which was a smart thing) bugs where getting fixed at an alarming rate. Unfortunatly the damage was already done, people where already returning to their previous games, not returning to VG. Despite the fixes and added content the game kept on bleeding players. So yes no matter how much I regret it, it is understandeble that they kinna.. stopped investing in it
I truely do regret the game is dieing a slow death, but in too many ways I am gratefull for endles hours of joy the game has offered me. So yes, and Im sure Ill be the only one, I am gratefull that SOE took over the debris from Microsoft. I highly doubt that any other company could.. or more important would have tried to safe fix the game.
So personally, I rather think back to hours of fun and good memories, its the least the game deserves.
WoW launch was bad? VG has a less bad launch?
We must be from different planets. The VG I tried out from beta to launch was one of the most disappointing, bugged, unstable online experience.
VG also has years of content for a new player. Not months like most mmos now a days but years. Hell, in all time VG has been around there is only 1 guild that has completed all the raid content. So, yea and can complain about content if your 1 of the members of Veracity. If your not then it doesn't really make much sense.
This is quite true, depending on what a player want from his game.
The classes, the skills and the sheer number of places to visit. This game can be entertaining in some ways. It was the disastrous launch that killed it right off.
We must be from different planets. The VG I tried out from beta to launch was one of the most disappointing, bugged, unstable online experience.
If WoW, or any game, launched in this day and age in the state WoW was at first then it would bomb.
I was there when WoW launched, I remember minor issues in terms of gameplay.
The real bomb was server bottlenecks. Too many people and too few servers.
In comparison, modern day launches are mostly bug ridden and plagued with design issues. FF14, VG, and tons of small indies that simply are nightmares. The only really smooth launch I can remember in my decades of gaming are WoW, CoX, and LoTRO.
Since launch WoW was consistently the best performing MMO, with least bugs and issues and an excellent support service. I left WoW for over a year but that has nothing to do with the game engine or performance/service.
I wonder when SOE will put this game offline. 245 players can't raise enough money to keep the servers running I think...
I don't understand when u guys r so negative about the game, why u bother to write n see t forums even..
on 24 hr basis VG on an average has 225-230 to 425-450 players online all the time depending upon time and day (I am not counting halgar which also has 25-30 players mostly )..and this is only for Telon...if u extrapolate it (i hope u know wat i mean..it will easily give 3000 suns for the game..
assuming tht few of them are station pass holders..game easily genertes 40-50k for SOE per month...
I'm not negative, just realistic. This few players can't be enough to make the profitable. And yeah, a few player might have Station Pass, but do you realy think a dime of those station passes go to VG? Don't think to. All Station Pass profits will go directly to EQ2 development (99% sure of that).
And don't give me crap that this is only Telon. The EU server is close to EMPTY. And I know. I recently gave VG an other try (I agree with others here - it's one of the best MMO's out there), but that EU server is DEAD DEAD DEAD. And 450 players at prime-time..? kinda DEAD DEAD DEAD too in my book.
I also saw a few ppl suggest VG to go F2P. It might be a good option, IF SOE didn't hold the game. We've all seen with EQ2X what happened to the game. You get milked and get close to nothing in return...
I loved diplomacy in the game. I wish other developers would use something similar. Graphics were kind of a mixed bag. I took some amazing screenshots!
I'd like to make note, as a network engineer, that network traffic costs the company almost nothing. Having the infrastructure to handle the desired traffic is what costs money. Aka, laying lines and buying new servers. Say if a server can handle 1000 users you will need a new server whenever your growth rate of active online users nears that mark.
Just to educate users and make you wonder why people pay for things...
Texting piggybacks your message on the automatic message your phone sends to the satellite to keep it connected... that is sent every 15 seconds or so. It is totally free to the cellphone company.
Sending cable internet to your house is totally free once the lines are connected.
Internet only costs so much in the US because our infrastructure is insanely dated and companies save money by delaying upgrades to the last possible second here. They wait till the tech is mainstream and upgrade and until then bide time by doing nasty little things like capping your bandwidth to make it look like (to most of their userbase) that they are fulfilling their contracts to you.
I'd like to make note, as someone who is not a network engineer, that once the infrastructure is created there are still plenty of ongoing expenses.
"Sending cable internet to your house is totally free once the lines are connected."
The head end, repeaters and routers don't run on magic. The support, administrative, marketing and maintenance team are not paid in happy thoughts and good wishes. To claim that "Sending cable internet to your house is totally free once the lines are connected." is just absurd.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

WOW's only major issue when it launched was the queues. Can you link to what brought you to this conclusion about WOW's launch?

I know in my country the power companies pay the owner of the power cables money to use them. My guess it the same would be for the owner of the internet cables. Beside that like you said my Internet provider promises a 99% uptime or something like that. For that to be possible you need to replace hardware before they brake down and have a team ready 24/7 to react.
Same for a gaming company. I am sure they want there servers to be online. They also have to actually store data and not just transfer it.[ http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2009/11/25/wows-back-end-10-data-centers-75000-cores/ ] imagine the cost of running all that. 15 euro's however in general is WAAAAAY to much from what I have been reading. The actual cost per user is much lower. The box sales (of the originial or expensions) in general pay back the investments made. As long as MMO gamers simply keep paying that much money that is what we get charged.

there was rampant rubberbanding and server crashes, but nothing to the scope that was the nightmare of VG at launch.
The main difference is WoW was still a relatively good game back then.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
I wonder what people who write such bull are actually thinking.
Something like: Vanguard is something like EQ2 so everyone who plays Vanguard would just as well play EQ2 ?
Thats like thinking ozone is something like oxygen, so people needing oxygen might as well breathe ozone...
For the record, if SOE shuts down Vanguard, I would start playing Star Wars: The Old Republic. I would NOT start playing an old game that is essentially just a much weaker version of Vanguard (less challenge, less interesting classes etc).
So let me guess. you are content with game just running and don't care for content updates or expansions? are you sure it is him who is making stupid arguments? I think you missed the point. he is talking about well supported MMO which Vanguard is not and players always tend to shy away from MMOS like these. Vanguard might have a lot of content for new players but then there is also this thing called retention and holding on to subs. So yes it is silly to say that Vanguard doesn't need more players.
In its current state how anyone can even make such comment is mind boggling. Problem is everyone just thinks about themselves 'but i am content' well that is not good enough.

I was interested in buying this game on steam but this one topic made me change my mind.
240 players? Gimme a break.

Err, for the record: I will start complaining about lack of content in Vanguard the minute I've actually seen it all.
I have never met anyone who has seen everything Vanguard offers. Theres just a megaton of stuff to do, nobody managed that so far.
For example, until now I never had a highlevel diplomat. I am just getting close to actually have a full range of crafters at my hands.
