PvP 5-man rewards

TrenkerTrenker Member Posts: 88

The problem with WAR scenarios is that nobody cares who wins the scenario because you do not get a lot for it.  It's all about the kills for more XP / RR.

What is there in GW2 PvP 5-mans that encourage the objectives to be won, instead of just mindless fighting, apart from Tournaments where your ranking is the reward?

Thanks

    Fun.

    This is not a game.

Fun should be the primary reward. Other than that, I could see weapon and armor skins. Perhaps titles, rankings and special emotes or something. Basically cosmetic stuff that you can brag with. What kind of rewards did you have in mind?

    From what i understand.

Hot-Join PvP is just for fun/practice.

Tournaments will have rankings, title rewards and perhaps some reward system since players will be able to organize those within the game as well as there will be regular "official" tournaments going on.

WvWvW - still no details on that one.

Actual, that's not true. From the wiki (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_PvP):

    Rewards

There are global and individual rewards available in World vs World combat.

    World benefits

Territories and control points within the map will confer benefits to the world that controls them, such as faster energy/health regeneration, increased drop rate or increased experience gain for a time.

    Individual rewards

Players can gain experience and level their character, including rangers charming pets,[7] entirely in World PvP. Killing people in World vs World gives the player loot which means a player doesn't need to leave World PvP to get better gear.

There will most likely be titles similar to GW1, hopefully with awesome emotes as well.

Oddly enough, I'd like to say that you actually get the point.

If they take out the most obvious rewards and carrots (Here, get a little piece of loot!  Good boy!), then people end up only having one real reason to play.  Because they enjoy playing.

Which means that they have to make it a fun experience.

    THE HORROR.

Games are much better when they're not fun to play, and you're only doing it for trivial rewards!

    Exactly

GW2 is not about the rewards, but just about having fun.

Did you ever hear anyone in Call of duty hear asking for rewards after a victory...

Your supposed to rage at me!  bad fanboi!  but yes this is the largest draw to this game imo you can pick it up and compete from day one.

Why should I rage at you?  You were right.

There are people who demand loot carrots to do activities.  While GW2 will appeal for a while to them, it won't have any long term staying power.  I mean, you could try and get the rare cosmetic stuff I suppose, but some people demand better and better stats, which GW2 won't be providing them.

All the games I've put thousands of hours into, it was mostly just for the fun of it.

I also like the PvP aspect of things, and I don't need to be given any reward bigger than 'So I killed a bunch of other players, got a great K:D ratio, and learned some cool tricks'.

    So GW2 appeals to me.

GW2 won't appeal to some people.

I am totally at peace with this fact.

(... and I do totally love that you can hop right into competitive style PvP from day one... and if you leave for a year, you'll just be behind on tactics, you won't have to do some laborious gear grind just to get back into PvP again.  The PvP aspects of GW2 alone would be enough for me to buy it, the fact it has PvE I'd pay for means I'm just getting twice the game for my money)

We didn't do PvP in GW1 for the rewards, why should we care now? -Ofcourse I am not going to say no to rewards (more for us) but hey, why the hell are you playing if not for fun?

EDIT: Actually scratch that, sigils were quite valuable shortly after the launch. But AFTER their price went down (or we were filthy rich), we didn't care much.

It's kinda like why people played FPS games even before the whole "persistent" element hit the genre with levels, perks and hats to keep you playing. People played them because they were FUN.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

Actually in GW lot of guilds and player did PVP for titles and to be on top of the ladder list. Fun is subjective and players always want something as a reward for PVE or PVP whether it is ranks or physical loot as rewards.

... or just because you're competitive!

I kill people in games because it's fun and I like competing, not because I get a fancy hat or something. :)

If I get a fancy hat that's a BONUS, but it's not the point.

True. And while I did play in a guild that was ranked high in the ladder, I played for fun. Unfortunately due to the poor matchmaking system at the time, the higher you got the less matches you got (or you spent more time waiting in between). That is why many started to form smurf guilds. To play more.

The point of this thread, despite the  valid comments herein, is what if gaining the objectives (as important as they are to winning) is less fun than just fighting other players?

If it is all about fun (and I agree with all that), then what is going to motivate the player to play the arenas the way they are supposed to be played if taking the objectives is not fun (you just stand there for 10 seconds or so is all).

I've seen many cleverly designed scenarios in Warhammer, but players don't bother winning the scenario - they have more fun running around fighting than gaining the actual objectives.

So my question is not 'why PvP', but rather what is going to motivate players to gain the objectives (apart from the ladders)?

In other words - what does winning mean to you, your character, your guild or your server?

  • PalebanePalebane Member RarePosts: 4,011

Some people just want to win.

Some people just want to kill.

    Some people like both.

Why not have instances where you control objectives to win and instances where you just kill, like a deathmatch?

Why not have instances where both are important?

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Winning means you go up 1 point in your Gladiator title track.

On a more serious note, winning in the instanced arenas doesn't do much for your server or guild or character, its just there for amusement. The tournaments are a different beast entirely so you probably know what comes with that and finally World vs World vs World is where all the characters and guilds and servers get to actually have "winning" mean something to them because it benefits the server in a positive way. Either by increasing experience gain or allowing them to get better loot drop rates (MOAR LOCK PICKS NYAAA!!!).

    This is not a game.

Some kind of Achievment System like Call of Duty, with ranks, that is incredibly adictive I find.

Plus odd achievments like Call of Duty that had some like Kill an enemy, pick up his weapon, and kill him again with his own weapon.

Some cool stuff like that, plz not the WoW style ones of:

    Capture a graveyard 100 times

    Defend a Base 100 times.

    meh

    To answer OP question:

Provide deathmatch style modes with same maps, that way ppl doing the objetive modes are there for team wining
