Limiting DUST 514 to the PS3 is arguably not a good first move. Console FPS gamers tend to flock towards the newest titles, thus leaving anything less than stellar somewhat forgotten a few months after launch. Its already a saturated market, and the EVE brand probably won't be recognized by most potential consumers. Taking this alone into account, DUST has an uphill battle ahead of it.
Now, CCP has released its first information regarding the planned MT for DUST 514. We all knew this was coming, just not the details. Along with the $20 box price (which is smart, keep that cheap) players will be given $20 worth of MT credit (also smart).
However, the other comments CCP has made regarding MT,,, well less than reassuring. In regards to players being able to buy non-currency items with ingame currency, CCP stated "It avoids the buy/win problem that some micro-transition games have". So, incase players don't wish to further invest in DUST 514 past the inital $20 entry barrier, they can "choose to play for free and just grind".
Except they aren't playing for free at $20 box price, which, if the MT is just vanity items works out just fine IMO; however the language they've used seems to be hinting that in order for players not MTing with actual cash to compete they will need to buy MT items with ingame currency, the 'play free and just grind' option.
Now, like I stated most of the PS3 install-base has probably never even heard of EVE or DUST 514 and is looking forward to the next Battlefield/Medal of Honor/Call of Duty title to get their FPS fix. However, DUST 514 could still capture a decent playerbase if the game is of high quality compared to the competition; but if they choose to put a MT system which allows people to buy an advantage with real currency with the option to a grueling grind for everyone else?
If they released it like that on PC, maybe, but PS3 exclusive I just don't see that working. They are used to preorder exclusives, CE exclusives, DLC, etc, but console gamers haven't been exposed to the MT model enough for a relatively unknown title to force it upon them.
Good chance I'm worrying about nothing, we'll just have to wait and see what the MT store looks like.

im glad its ps3 exclusive. im sick and tired of competing against people with aim bots on their pcs in fps. i've completely removed all pc fps and only play them on the console. most people dont even know pc fps are swarming with aim bots. they just assume x player is god like and instantly kills abc the milisecond they appear on screen. i have no problem with mt either in dust. as long as you can also buy it with credit, who gives a crap if someone else can buy it for $X. just do contracts and earn that isk.
I disagree that PS3 gamers don't know about dust, there has been a fair amount of coverage of the game in ps3 circles and the response is overwhelmingly positive.
Nothing matters except for this: is the game any good? If it's good, people will play it and CCP will come off looking like geniuses. If it flops, it might break CCP.
Clearly you haven't heard about Modded Warefare 2. I play an abundance of PC FPS's. I haven't encountered a hacker in years. Most hackers are weeded out by a gameshield, or (if it's a lobby game) Server Moderators who sit in spectator and kick the hacking players. How can you encounter a hacker now-a-days in PC fps's? If DUST doesn't want to make good money on the PC; their loss. We still have Planetside 2.

You definitely have encountered one, you just couldn't tell (no offense intended).
The odds of you not having encountered one while playing PC FPS games anytime over the last decade are absolutely astronomical. Hacking is just as alive in modern FPS gaming as it was at the beginning of this last decade, and it will remain as such until long after this next decade - and the one after it, and so on, and so on - are long passed.
It will outlast both my, and your, lifetimes.
They must have hid it well. I always ranked 1-4 on the lists'; I haven't seen any 50-0's. They must not have been blatantly obvious.
Just a future note; I kinda lol'ed when I realized we're using hacking and ps3 in the same discussion.

In some games hackers are a problem but usaly its the low quality/cheap games that have this, most populair fps's have a very little amound of hackers, I the argument that I/we dont see them coz they mask it well is kinda bullshit. a hacker hacks to win, not to lose.
My only concern is that CCP may be killing off their own game by going PS3 exclusive. Next gen consoles will be out in the next couple of years and where does that leave the PS3? Its currently in last place in the console standings and will become an "old gen" console in the near future. Not to mention the fact that the majority of console FPS gamers are on XBox Live and I wonder if they are bottlenecking their target audience a little too much.
You aren't wrong. If you need to go console with a shooter; don't just settle with a PS3. Even if Microsoft said no, its worth the energy to convine them. If you notice; PS3 shooters have far less numbers then their xbox counter-parts. (Popular cross-consoles such as COD and BF.)

Net gen consoles for Microsoft and Sony will not be out for a long time.
IIRC they decided against the 360 for reasons based on their live service, or something about not always being online. I'm not sure. I can't remember, but there was a specific reason they didn't want it in on 360.
I'm kinda depressed about this though. Being PS3 only. I may or may not buy it, but I'm leaning towards not buying it. If it was on PC, I would 100% buy it and play it. Limiting it to consoles is kinda lame. Unless they actually let you use mouse and keyboard, I'm 90% not buying it for ps3 (I think the only game on PS3 that let you use mouse+keyboard was UT3? I don't think many, if any other games on PS3 are compatible)
Knowing how long it takes CCP to develop their games, I will be shocked if it comes out before Sony announces its next console.
Especially since they just fired ~20% of their staff, and said they are concentrating on Eve now.
Microsoft is smart (Bill gates dident get Rich for being dumbase) that is why Dust 514 is not on the XBOX 360.
There is no market for this type of game, the Gimmick of tying it into EvE will not make it a success, being a better more polished shooter then every other fps game on the market is the only way to attract players. And as mentioned before the FPS crowed constantly migrates too the newest game... Why because it has the latest fetures, updated grafics and builds upon what was good in the last game in the series.
Dust 514 is a fail because...
1. PS3 exclusive....
2. CCP has never done an FPS shooter before, and the competition is really good
3. RMT... Pay to win is not something I think will go down well with the FPS crowed. A players personal skills is what gives people cred in an fps game. Buying the bigest and badest gun for real money and owning will only score you points as a skilless looser among your peers...(For example dice, that makes battlefield also make battlefield heroes and they have a leaked statment that for their game they use trickery to try and fool the players that uppgrades really dont make alot of diffrence when they infact do...
There are more reason but I think these 3 are enough by thesmselfs to break Dust 514... Its going to fail and its going to Fail on an epic level...
sure biggest baddest gun.... but after he dies he no longer has it... so you should not use what you cant afford to lose... even if a dude has a lot of $ but he sucks at playing the game, he will be just dumping $ into the game.
Skill will matter... if you will have skill in this game you will be able to earn your money to get that baddest gun, vehicle, or module.... or if you have a EVE toon that is making millions a day through market, you will not need $ to get the baddest gun...
CCP is good when it comes to micro transactions... look at Plex... they got expertise in balancing $ to ISK conversion...
i do too... Dust 514 is on PS3 home page blogs... and PS3 players are posting comments about how they dont know EVE but this game is looking promising...
Oh and the talk about the next gen consoles...
I am sure CCP is tonally aware of that fact, one thing they may or may not do:
is when the next gen console comes out, DUST 514 will have same game mechanics and will still work with the PS3 version, but it will have better graphics... same as you can do it on PC lower and increase the amount of visual load on the CPU....
