So far i am enjoying the game after about a month of paly... i'll probably will keep subbed till SW or GW arives.
But somehow this very beautifull game has no immersion to me....
-The Quests and background stories don't inmvite me to read them... they feel a little lackluster.
-The game is really laid on rails, on top of that i allways outlevel content, which prevents me from finishing area's. And you need to do all these questhubs to get to the endstation... allways finish all quests before moving on... or you might end up without quests.
-Jumping from build A to Build B and playing all those different roles prevents me from attaching to the character...
-Rifts feel all the same, grinding rifts is not my idea of fun... the only very nice dynamic thing comming from them are the patrolls i allways meet.... love that part of the game, not the rifts, but the patrolls.
-Random generated groups don't add to the community feeling.
Anyone else havinf this problem? I was more attached to Pac Man then to my Rift characters.

I had the exact opposite problem
if you dont do RIFTs -- are unlucky with dungeon finder (under level 25) -- and dont do PVP
Quests out level you
but the primary issue is the same --- RIFT requires you to mix it up
the game does not have enough quest content to let you level on quests alone
I also disliked the "quest on rails" system, reminded me too much of WOW cataclysm
a player should be able to get quests at later outpost without having to do prequests
I agree with you on patrols, they made the game more exciting - not rifts
-- its easy to avoid a stationary rift, but patrols were a real threat that had you looking over your shoulder
anyhow, its a good game and it will only get better

ok deleted the part about SW and GW. Now tell how you would feel about the game if those hype machines were not in the back of your head.
People wonder what Rifts biggest problem are. There you go. Everything you are doing you are basing on youtube clips you have seen about those two games and what they promise to bring.
Instead you should be comparing it to what you have avaiable now..WoW/DAoC/Aion/EQ/DarkFall
This is the one problem I have with the game. I simply cannot get into the lore at all. It doesn't garner my interest in the least. I also think the PvP side of the equation is a bit lackluster although to be fair they do seem to be improving on this. Which is more than I can say for a lot of other games that launched. Most seem to throw PvP by the wayside while Trion at least seems to be making an effort to improve theirs.
Still, I think i'm going to start playing it as my main least for a while. Need a break from LotR and this game always was on my radar since I beta tested it. I am rather impressed with what they have been doing with their content updates. Said it before and I'll say it again that I see a lot of potential with this game.

This is honestly a fair assessment in my opinion. The lore and the writing outside of the game (the graphic novel/website stuff) is far superior to what is presented in the game.
Rift's problem isn't with the lore and the writing specifically. It's the presentation. They need to work on that. I'm hoping with the chronicles - it will bring what you seek.
If you had 50million dollars to make a game would you blow it all on CGI movies and voiced over stuff or actual content? Just remember this is # what of the Star Wars franchise and they got lore coming out the wazoo and it never has taken off.
Lore only takes you so far before people start looking for content. Is it sad they had to budget it like that, of course, was it required probably yeah
This is pretty much why I didn't stick with RIFT and have very little interest in ever returning (unfortunately). I just never felt like I was apart of the game. I was always aware that I was PLAYING a game. It was a complete and utter disconnect for me.
I played until about level 40 or so and the quests just weren't that interesting and neither were the instances. Quite frankly, the only part of the game that I thoroughly enjoyed was the secret hidden areas and the collections. That's about it.
i logged back in during the 'welcome back' week they had. and honestly i logged onto each of my characters, checked my mail, cleaned out some inventory and then....nothing. i tried the pvp, rifts, questing, grinding even, but i just couldn't see any reason why i was there.
its a AAA title no doubt. and many people are getting great satisfaction from it. but i just didn't 'connect' to either the world or the gameplay.
when i as in CBT, OBT, and even in the first month of play, when my characters were all low level, i did feel a sense of immersion and story. but once i hit the 30s it just began to trickle away to nothing. /shrug i dunno. dont really understand what creates responses like that in me and completely opposite ones in others.
im actually kind of fascinated by the whole psychological interaction people have with games in general, but mmos in particular.

One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

See, I personally HATED CBT and OBT. I pre-ordered the game anyway because I have serious problems haha. Just a total MMO-addicted person, hell I even have Archlord boxed. When I came back for launch, I actually enjoyed the lower levels, but just like you the minute I got into my 30's... it was just total bordeum.
I had the same problem in Aion, and actually the two felt similar at times, the areas that you fight in and such. Kind of odd. But yeah, never came back to Aion, RIFT may be one of those as well.
True, but I never asked for CGI movies or voice over stuff - although a little more of it would of been nice. I honestly don't have an idea of what to do for presentation. I just know that what I've read on the website and the graphic novel is far better than the quests I've read in game. There's just something disjointed about the quests that I can't put my finger on.
The endless saga and water saga are well done though.
You can hit 50 in Rift in 2 days. Aion is not even remotely that easy to level up in.
I never implied that it was easy to level in Aion. I said "the two felt similar at times, the areas you fight in and such," and they do. The desert areas look very similar to one and other and they remind me of one and other visually in those areas.
I have no idea how the heck you got the leveling pace out of that.
The graphics are the reason why it feels like that. Played Aion for 16 months and I think you are talking about Morheim desert on Asmo side. Enviromental graphics are actually pretty on par with Aion. The movements are nowhere enar the same, but that could be where you get that feeling from.
Definitely, but I was actually Elyose, so it was on that side. I WAS in a desert. Who knows. It's been a longgggg time since I played Aion and I said I have no desire to return so I'll never know which it was l o l.
However, the other thing I'd like to say as far as a massive disconnect from RIFT was the voice overs in the CG clips. God, they had the absolute worst voice overs I've ever heard in a game, personally. I really detest whoever the actors were.
LOL! The only voice acting I like was the boss in IT. "Eliaaaaaaammmm...."
And the Werewolf boss in Darkening Deeps "Get him out of the moonlight!"
I don't know why, but they make me smile.
Okay, I'll give you that. I LOVE the guy in IT. Gives you the chills a bit the first time you hear it.
But the man and woman who do the voice overs for the opening sequences when you make a new character (the name of the NPC's escape me) sound SO stupid. Disjointed from the game. They really needed to redo them and a lot of people were saying that before launch but nope, they didn't fix them.

Agreed. On that. I actually like the old voice of Alsbeth too before they changed her.
The immersion really is crap in RIFT.
Hate to say it, but the world is just too damn dead. The capital cities, and the world of Telara are so miniscule that it really feels underwhelming.
The zones are ghost towns - which makes an alarming statement about the game's population: how the hell does a world as small as Telara feel so lonely?!?
Factor in a community that is quiet as mouse in church and you have an overwhelming feeling of isolation - not at all good. I have played since headstart across 4 servers and my experience has been this across 3 servers. (In case you're wondering, Sunrest was my favourite server in terms of a lively community).
The game art outside the game is actually pretty characterful: whenever I see a RIFT ad banner with Cyril Kalmar and Asha Catari, I see a tonne of potential. But then I hop in-game and I just don't care.
RIFT's questing also sucks. There are too many gratuitous "Go kill 15 boars" quests, and what's worse is that you're usually sent back to a location that you recently spent a good chunk of time in to complete the new quest.
The characters, races and factions lack distinct silhouettes: At Zareph's Return, I have run to the Defiant side so many times as a Guardian mistakenly.
By giving the player characters and NPCs a different set of models, Trion has creating a gaping disconnect between the players and their game world.
Lastly, you seem to cast a negative light on the LFD but let me tell you that this game's community has always been pretty bloody antisocial. Been here since headstart and the first month was great fun, but even then, people hardly spoke to each other. No one stopped to chat in zones. No one said anything while closing RIFTs. This is a consequence of the sad playerbase Trion has chosen to primarily attract: jaded, bitter ex-WoWers who somehow think they're too good for whatever game they play. In their minds, they're too good for "kiddy" WoW, so now they enjoy being big fish in a small pond. At least in WoW, you had the mom who was so sweet, or the chill Army guy, or the funny dad who teases his son while they play.
I am sure there are chill people in RIFT (I knew some before Trion killed servers), but your point on the LFD sounded so damn hollow that I couldn't not speak up >_<
Trion has done some good things: Wardrobe tab, even though it's half-arsed, is a good start. AA will be a major step: I'm willing to give them that chance. I loved this game in the beginning and I would love to love it again.
But I just played Aion (free trial), and listened to AoC OST... those games might have sucked big time, but man do they have character!
PS. The dungeons are also really well done too.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I need to take this advice more.
I agree the immersion was poor but I did like the classes (I tried all 4 to the upper 20s)
if RIFT had better quest content -- I would have stayed with the game longer

I probably should have said: that is the only thing keeping me in RIFT: everything about the soul system.
I PvP, I know how imbalanced it can be, but I think RIFT's soul system is one of its biggest selling points.

Wife and I did a 6 month sub but around month 3 we were still in the mid30s and it became a chore to log on. I just could never get into the game it had no immersion for me.
I agree. I enjoy the game, but I'm not immersed. the main reason for me is how objects in the not-so-far distance materialize out of thin air constantly, breaking me out of any kind of immersion within the world. I have the graphics cranked, but for some reason, Trion opted to have no low blurry low polly versions of the objects for great distance. It doesn't need to look perfect from 100 yards away, it just needs to be there.
Ooh I've got another one. How about poppin' a wheely on your mount every time you start to cross a bridge?

Its slick and smooth, plenty of polish and good looking animations and visuals. A flexible and diverse class system while keeping it in a familiar play style and setting.
The game lacks depth or variety on several levels. Idle and attack animations are shared between Eth/Mathosian, Kelari/High Elf, Never played Bahmi or Dwarf so cant say. Questing is decent up to about scarlet gorge and the 'storyline' just becomes uninteresting from there. I got tired of attacking the same Undead, Wolves, and Humans every zone, with very little rehash between them.
Rifts and Invasions are dicey. They seem to either be you steamroll them due to your numbers or they steamroll you due to lack of numbers. Never mind the fact that a good chunk of the 50s pop the 25 and under rifts due to that they give the same rep as the higher level ones.
Add to the fact that they cram more into an already small claustrophobic world.
I gave it a two month run. It was fun, but in the end looking at what content waited at level 50. Just was not worth it to level the rest of the way.
Thats why i allways start out with monthly subs..
And thats why i could cancel today after reaching level 50... still 8 days to go in my 2nd month....
I moved back to EQ2, because somehow that good old aunty has allways some lore and secrets left to immerse me ... Rift felt really to blant to me, which proves that just good combat alone isn't worth everything... Next game comming up is SW:TOR, seems like those stories are really immersive and i can live with standard MMO combat till GW2 arives....
