I'm playing the 6 day free deal and thinking about subbing. I have two questions :
1) I got my second soul as a quest around level 5. I almost paid 20 gold from the rogue trainer, but then got the quest for a free one, so I got lucky. I'm now level 9, will I get my next soul for free as a quest ?......I guess it would be no big deal to pay for it as I already got about 30 gold as a level 9, but just asking.
2) Is this game on rails ?.....It seems as if I only have to do about three quest per level. You do a small section then move on to the next. This makes it seem as if the game is on rails. I guess I'm still in a tutorial area but Is the entire game like this or does it open up at later levels ?

First of all, you will have to pay for all your souls after this. They used to be quest based, but I think they went with just paying a flat fee to get them.
Second, yes the game is on rails if all you do is quest, as each quest leads you to the next. It is meant to be this way as each area follows a sub-story. But by doing rifts, PvP or instances you can level up without doing most of the quests if that is your thing.
The game is very much a themepark MMO, but unless your on of those "emo"-gamers that hates themepark MMO's just because WoW is one of them and WoW is popular, then its a fun game if you just open your mind and take in everything it has to offer.
Also, you will spend the majority of your money on extra specializations. You can have up to 5 different "specs", but the price really goes up after the first 2 or 3.
1. Once you get to your major city, you can search out each of the soul trainers and do the required quest for each soul at lvl 13.
2. Pretty much, several quests per area, do them, move onto a new area of the map. If you're higher level from other experience, then you can run through an area and progress to the next harder area (or choose to do all the quest, I started outranking my quest difficulty with my lvl).
Looks like things may have changed, lame.
The 20 gold from the trainers are not for another soul they are for a whole new setup of 3 souls. you can get several roles and set them all up and switch them out on the fly. your first three souls are free of charge. Also in your capital city one of the first things you will want to do is unlock all the rest of the souls from the soultrainers. Quests to obtain a soul shard from a rift and release a mob and defeat it for each soul. You will do this for like 6 times to unlock all the souls for your calling. Also there is a PvP soul you might want as well from an npc near the warfront area.
The game is indeed on rails as you move from quest hub to quest hub but what the game does do around lvl 30ish is open up ..something people aren't expecting to happen and can get a bit overwhelming after that but still very basic gameplay with some twists. Really an excellent game overall I guess.
No it isn't lame. The quests they had before to get the souls were lame. They should have really challenging epic questlines to get the souls. Not this watered down stuff that goes like "run to location A, press button X, run to location B press button X again etc. It doesn't only go for this but also for every daily in the game. So boring and unimaginative.

Since he/she has posted a question here....
I think we can safely predict that this means the OP is an above average MMORPG player....
So ..... they will soon realise that RIFT is pants and won't be subbing.

You can get 3 souls in the starter area for free. Don't do the rift at the end of the starter area until you have 3.
Yes, the game is on rails, although you can level by doing rifts, dungeons, pvp, and even some crafting quests so the quest chains are not the only option. Personally, I think the quest design - and especially the writing - could get better but despite this I still love the game.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went from Apprentice to full 5 star Elite in under 2 months. I was pleasantly surprised again when I went from Elite to just barely Hardcore in 2 weeks. Apprentice, here I come!
