Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of the most anticipated games coming down the pike and during Gamescom 2011, MMORPG.com's John Milburn had the opportunity to sit down for a brief chat with Bioware Associate Lead Designer Emmanuel Lusinchi. Check out our exclusive interview and then leave us a couple of comments!
MMORPG: What do you feel is the most exciting aspect of the game?
Emmanuel Lusinchi: We wanted to make the game feel more like a story then just another level grinder, we wanted you to care about your character, so that you aren’t just playing to get more experience instead you are playing because of the feel that your character is immersed into the story. For example there is a Star Wars scroll that is constantly being updated with your personal story every time you finish a quest to help remind you what is going on, the idea is to get you so involved in the story that you would forget what level your character even was.

I love what I hear about the game, but really, I thought Bioware was smarter than that to waste energy and resources on something so juvenile as raiding. For a group that knows and understands story with the table top background that they have, they just disappoint. I'm really tired of hearing about "raiding" in ToR. I could care less. If I wanted to raid I'd play WoW, not a role playing game.

I agree, Bane.
But this game has to appeal to "everyone".
Its a Star Wars product. And that means #1... make as much money as possible off of your 1977 Blockbuster. In five more ticks of new calendars it will have been 40 years of this mindset.
Yea seriously, there shouldn't be groups either, or guilds. Can't we just have a single player game with a chat box and auction house already?
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
guild ships? Where? I will look for a link.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
There are plenty of other things that "raiders" enjoy aside from raiding. Most people don't raid. The only people that will tell you otherwise are the frothing at the mouth rabid fanbois that like raiding. Even Blizzard admitted at their first Blizzcon that most people don't raid and that they were shocked to learn that fact. They said when they datamined the numbers were under 5 percent. Most people that game are casuals. That's why you see alot more indy developers churning out casual games nowadays. Also keep in mind, the people that Blizzard hired to develop WoW, were ex EQ uber guild leaders, so there "vision" was eschewed going in.
They LOVE raiding, but the majority of gamers can't stand it. There is plenty else that they could do for MMO's that don't include raiding. In fact there were at least half a dozen MMO's that came before EQ that I could name right off the top of my head, none of which ever had raiding. Raiding never existed until EQ did, and foolishly, developers and corporations continue to copy the mistake and waste resources on something most people will never even bother with.

Its all part of the big plan of EA to get on top of Activision, they have some personal thing going, plus EA wants to have the top dog game on every major market, like battlefied with fps, sports with Fifa and so on.
Raiding in SWTOR is just about getting on top of activision blizzard, they really hope to bring down WoW
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
"apperance system"
oh... thank god...
Now hopefully it'll just let me wear a normal Jedi outfit with no freaking stupid armor pieces....

If I read another post regarding Swtor were the writer states his personal preference as a dogmatic truth to which everyone should subscribe I think my head will explode.
My brand new bloggity blog.
I just have a habit of looking at things as is, not to mention I did back up what I said with factual statements. Did you know for example, the first raid was in EQ? The dragon Lord Nagafen followed by Lady Vox. The reason they were put in? To keep people paying subs. A lure, nothing more, nothing less. It didn't have anything to do with the initial role playing game that Brad McQaid promised when the game was still in beta and at early released.
Fir3 I understand what you're saying, but they are never going to bring down WoW with more of the same. Alot of people (myself included) want to see something "different". For example, I think I've played more of City of Heroes than any other MMO that I've ever played. While I play for a while and quit again, I always keep going back because it is different from most MMO's out there. It's not the same tired wash, rinse, and repeat game that many MMO's are. I feel similarily about DDO too.

Well that is very factually, exactly one way of looking at it. And calling raiding "juvenile" like in your first post isn't helping to see your posts in an objective light either.
For balance sake (even if I dislike too much raiding myself as well):
Raiding offers challenging pve group content and long term objectives requiring skill, knowledge, organisation, teamwork and social skills to be succesful and it is appealing to a great amount of mmorpg players.

yep, i feel the same, but sure as hell, they are gonna die trying.
They are trying to beat WoW on their own league, not gonna happen, as far as raiding goes (I havent played EQ) but blizzard does make the best PvE encounters, and has pretty much burned many mechanis on the 6 years of raids they've put in the game to a point where hardly anything is really new in instanced raiding.
Just have to look at Cho'gall and Atrimedes(just go on youtube and watch the bars in the middle of the screen) fights to figure out why they are putting those mechanics in the game, its something new and shinny, altho it feels clunky and hardly has any real effect (specially cho'gall fight).
Still I expect many more mechanics like that coming into raiding on both games in the future.
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
I don't really know any other way to look at it Pony. Raiding is juvenile, that's exactly how I see it. I'm not some little kid with hours and hours and hours on end to go raiding for loot that "maybe" I can use, only do it over, and over, and over again. I'm a gamer. I'm not going to play a game to have a second job for pixels on a screen. If I want a challenge, I'll play a single player game on hard mode. Role playing games are supposed to be about story, not guess the magical tactic or die in frustration over, and over, and over again, or looking at a cheater site to figure it all out, thusly taking all the "adventure" out of it all. Everytime I see "Raiding" added to games, I see the antithisis of role playing, I see greed, avarice, and all sorts of petty bickering that ensues. I see people leaving guilds because they just have to abandon their friends for mythical pixels on a screen for a character that's not real. It happens constantly with raid based games.

I hope not Fir3, I personally would rather see something that involved actual intelligent thought and combat. Something more reactive ala along the lines of DCUO or DDO or one of the other action games. Something that requires more thought. As I said in my post above, I just don't care for playing guess the magic tactic, and getting killed over and over again. That's not fun either to me, especially with the rewards are always so miniscule in comparison to the grief. I could just go spend my money on single player games and be much more entertained instead. Hopefully Bioware does their PvP game right at least.

deppends the way you see it.
There are ppl in my former guild who would put 2 weeks of work when a new patch comes out to raid, and I do mean raid for 12-24h a day.
While I am not proud of having been part of this crowd, i am also not ashamed of it.
In most guild they raid 3 hours, 3-4 times a week, if you like group content, raiding will be the ultimate goal, and 12h a week for a game is not that much lets be honest, yea you gotta be there on time, but how else do you group with 25 ppl at the same time?
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
Pretty funny that BW actually was quoted hinting of maybe offering giant guild ships down the road the same way SWG did and never finished either.
Overall some pretty weak questions from the interviewer. The interview sounded like a fanboy wanting to ask the easy questions.
I'm interested in the journey not the destination lol i enjoy leveling, exploring gearing up for tougher fights and all. Raiding is a good end game thing to do to me over pvp i always kinda sucked at pvp lol. I wonder how good the crafting system is or if there is any i just started reading afew things about the game. Most games that i've played aren't worth a $60 dollar price anyway maybe 20-40 at best. DA2 that bioware made was maybe a $25-30 tag not 60 lol i pray to the bioware gods this game will not leave me unsatisfied and with buyers remorse.

Exactly people have to remember while they are always calling for isolation from one part of the community or another perception is everything and real world economics can't be forgotten do we really want to have to pay forty dollar sub fee's just so we can play a game that doesn't have raiders or pvpers in it, I certainly don't I'd rather them find a way to serve all types of gamers willing to buy the product so long as my gaming needs aren't being overlooked and I don't think people who prefer not to raid, group or pvp can say that with this game since it is one of the first games I've ever heard say they are focusing on your characters story as opposed to just your place in the game world.
Raiding is one of the content / features and not the main focus of game. A good MMO is one which caters to all kind of players. Non raiders can just do PVP (10% difference compared to PVE armor) or craft considering crafting gives you the second best armor and even cosmetic gears can be upgraded to raid level with upgrades. If you are only focusing too much on raiding part it is not fault of the game since it offers you lot more besides that.
They should take a looksy at what happened with WoW and Cataclsym when it came to tough end game content. Yes yes this isn't WoW etc but the idea is the same.
Look at heroic dungeons which were only 5 man. They came out too tough for people, to which having nothing much else to do.. eventually left the game.
I'm all up for a challenge, but there is some writting on the wall here.
This is something that I am not getting, isn't there a PvP stat?
If they give PvP worst gear than raiders they are shi*ing on every PvPer
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
Difference is 10% and will be hardly noticeable and don't forget you can also upgrade your armors with help of crafters. So let us say a PVE guys enter PVP with his PVE gear, PVP gear will be only 10% more effective. Similarly, the same 10% difference will take effect when you enter dungeons with PVP armor, giving 10% edge to PVE armor.
The execution of appearance tabs in many mmo works because it is simple and straightforward. It is a feature that tends to be requested by the social, roleplayer types, so I hope their system will not be overly complicated, difficult to achieve, or convoluted. And really, in this day and age this feature should be common place.
The game that changed this formula was DCUO, and I have to say I did enjoy their system quite a bit. It was probably my favorite design aspect of the game.
lol, I can't be the only one who noticed this:
"Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of the most anticipated games coming down the pike"
It's "coming down the pipe"; a pike is a fish.
in regards to raiding, its and mmo. theres a reason your connected to thousands of other people. Mingle, socialize, its not a hard thing to do. Everyone gets a fair chance at loot with there loot system. If you want to play a single player game dont play a mmo.
Or a resting place for severed heads. Hidden 'stab' at other games? Probably not but.. maybe ;P
