Educate me on the version of the Star Wars trilogy.

thekid1thekid1 Member UncommonPosts: 789

I finally found original unaltered DVD's of the Star Wars trilogy.

Where Han Solo shoots first, no Jar Jar in the end of Return of the Jedi, no muppet music scene at Jabba, no CGI period.

However, I seem to remember there were versions of the films with enhanced special effects but NO altered scenes.

Is this true?

Was this in the early 90's on VHS?

What about the original unaltered versions on DVD, do they have enahnced special effects?

I watched the newest DVD release a few months back and was disgusted how the films were raped, however I do not mind enhanced special effects.

I have now owned three different versions of Star Wars:

    Original VHS

    Remastered VHS (Better special effects)

Remastered DVD (Han did not shoot first plus all the other add ins.  This set included the unaltered versions but I never watched them.)

Soon the Blu-Ray Versions come out and I am wondering what will be changed in them.  I wonder if they can use CGI to make a better actor out of the kid that plays young Anakin?

        Hope that helps.

Yes, there was the digitally remastered version with no added scenes or other junk that came out in 90s. I bought a box back then.

Funny, even tho I was a kid when the Original Trilogy was in the movie and thus loved the old version, I always felt the makeover was a huge improvement. ;)

Other than Han shooting first getting changed and the end of "Return of the Jedi", I agree with you.

Do you know if the original unaltered DVD version also has these remastered effects?

So you like the new ending in Return of the Jedi were you see all the planets cheering and even a shot of a Jar Jar creature?

You like the muppet music scene at Jabba's palace in Empire strikes back?

You like the additional critters and creatures on Tatooine in Star Wars?

Like I said, I never watched it, but I don't think they did.  I think they were only added to the DVD set for nostalgia reasons.

Damn George Lucas really know how to market SW. A lot of people bought a few versions of the same movie lol.

There's not really an unaltered DvD version. There is a DvD set released at the end of 2006 that includes the unaltered versions though. I do not believe it has the remastered effects. All the rest of the DvD sets include the changes. Any sets released after the Star Wars prequel movies include the whiney Anakin Skywalker at the end of Return of the Jedi.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Err, yes. And the new scenes in the other 2 films. Like the open windows in Cloud City.

The only thing I don't like from the make over is the young Anakin ghost at the end of RotJ.

The thing of Han shooting first never was an issue for me. It was a dangerous and dead situation. Who was faster pulling the trigger here never was a matter for me. *shrug*

Alright, different tastes for everyone I quess.

I even forgot (blacked out) Anakin's ghost..

In my opinion the new additional stuff raped the films. Every time I see that additional stuff the magic is temperarily gone.

Then I remind myself to just ignore that stuff and remember how the films were.

Luckily with these original DVD versions I don't longer have to!

I can see waht they where trying to do when they added all the CGI stuff, but they tried too hard added too much random stuff...

Han should have always shot first stupid making Greedo shoot first..

So I do enjoy all the nice new special effects but in the end they messed it up a bit, but saying that its still awesome watching them :)

The Latest films had some of the magic from the origionals but again they just went over the top with some things and it just messed things up..

Actually it wasn't. I just now watched the original scene. Greebo or whatever he is called has a gun pointed at Han.

He was not planning on shooting him at all but take him to Jabba. Han was the ice cold killer in that particular scene.

And it set a good cool adult tone for the rest of the film.

A 70's scifi comic/pulp book vibe. Which was lost when they altered that (in my opinion) pretty important scene. (important to the vibe/feel/atmosphere of the film)

I can understand your point. But see, I am a very visual person. When I watched the old trilogy, a lot of things happened most in my mind, since visual technology was not well advanced back then. So the vast planets of Tatooine, the look of the aliens and all that, half existed only in my mind. So I felt, the new makeover was making visible what I had in my mind. It was like it became more "as it should be", with more detail and realism. Like the BlueRay version now replaces the muppet Yoda from Episode I with a CGI Yoda, which I find is good progress. For me it's all about visually detailled and believable design. ^^

EDIT: Again, the situation with Han ALWAYS felt a deadly threat, either immediately or by Jabbas revenge. Those are viscious people, and you DON'T give them a chance. I did not see it as evil when Han shot first, and I making it different just was a visualization of the threat I always saw. So for my interpretation it did not change, but make the situation as it was more clear. ;)

Blu-ray alteration to the scene in which Palpatine is giving Luke a lesson in not being a whiney bitch has Vader going 'No... Nooooo!!!' as he chucks Palpatine down the shaft. Epic fail Lucass, epic fail.

  • thekid1thekid1 Member UncommonPosts: 789

I'm also a very "visual" person but I care for atmosphere/vibe/feel instead.

But I  think the puppet Yoda looks so much more real then the CGI Yoda in the newer films.

I'm not a fan of CGI in any movie it all looks so fake to me.

Can you pls elaborate what you mean? What sort of change is made in that scene?

They got a few things right with the new versions: Mos E looking like an actual city vice 1 horse cow town, Jabba the Hutt being a Hutt not a big cubby guy, few more ships from the Death Star attack.  Mostly though it was all just marketing junk etc....

I heard Lucas pulled all the original versions when his altered one's came out so just his (current) view would be THE WORD.

Ya know if the Imp's and Rebels would have had any brains; the first thing they should have did was wiped out Gungun's and Ewoks and made the worlds a better place for us:)

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

Since you guys already answered the OPs question, I'll just share my feeling on how the original trilogy stacks up against the redos.

The original untinkered with trilogy was like a fine meal at a luxuary restaraunt, with a snifter of Remy Martin Louis XIII and a couple of Gurkha’s His Majesty’s Reserves, for afters. (Though I felt the Return of the Jedi offered far too large of a desert cart, as it were)

The final redo's where Han shot first, among other insults to fans, I would compare to a Mcdonalds Happy Meal full of Gungan sh*t.

But someone sprinkled sand over it and  you found some hairs as well.

Still a good meal but it could've been so much better and you are constantly reminded how it could have been so much better without the hairs and the sand.
