I know lots of people love this, it makes me a little concerned. I like the idea of devs having to come out with a constant stream of content to keep people playing. I feel like with this system once they sell you the game they have no incentive to keep you playing. Just a thought.

It worked for GW. The only way they make money is if they keep giving us content to keep us around.

No worries... They take care of that in expansions instead... about one each year.... Until they can not be botherd any more and you will be expected to grind till you cry....
Or at least that was how the original worked.
This have been a good conversation
Log onto Guild Wars and look how many people are still playing a game that now only gets a content update once in a blue moon. Still a lot of people. If anything not having a sub fee makes people want to play the game more but in a healthy way. Since you only payed for the box and maybe some fluff or content in the store you never feel like you are wasting money because you have not played the game for a week. (unless you didn't like it) A player can drop in and out as they please, allowing themselves to do what they need to in the real world but also having the ability to have fun in the game without the needed stress of thinking about how much play time= money time. I doubt everyone thinks this way but I like to think that way.
It is still working for GW2... They will have a Cash Shop that sells things like costumes and items that doesnt affect how you play. Mostly just looks and i see A LOT of people with this stuff.
Instead of taking the time to write out something that would explain why a subscription is not mandatory I will just say watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns-IIn-DG-c
It explains everything you need to know.
They actually do have an incentive... if you aren't still engaged with the community, and enjoying the game and world, how are they going to sell you expansions? They will continue adding content and improving the game after launch, because they will want people entrenched enough in the world and community to part with another $50 or so after a year. Will some people play this game more casually because of the lack of a subscription? Sure. But people can play however much they choose, as long as they stick around and continue to enjoy their time when they log in.
I think it also takes the weight off of ArenaNet somewhat in the short term, which means they won't be using cheap stopgaps like artificial ceilings, broken content, or ultra-repetitive endgame grinding to keep people paying each month. They'll be able to instead focus on putting out quality and giving value for the money the players do spend.
EDIT: When it comes down to it...if you really are concerned about ArenaNet not being able to make it without a subscription model...just buy another copy of the game every few months. It will be just like paying them a subscription fee. =D
Excellent video.
Wow nice vid!

No
great video, the only thing i would add, is that MMO's are waaaay more expensive to make. also after they are released you have to pay stuff for game upkeep. Some single player games do this as well ut not to the scale of a MMO.
Great video slappy. No I am not concerned with a no sub model. What I am concerned with is those that are concerned with the no sub model or those that say "GW2 is B2P so it allows me to still sub to another MMO." This video shows that they are all lemmings paying $15 a month just because it is how it is. Sure keep contributing to the greed machine. While some games can maybe justify a sub to keep it running smoothly, there is no and I repeat NO reason to keep it at the $15 per month mark since costs have gone down. As costs go down so should the sub costs on the consumer.

The sales from GW1 alone can pay for the server upkeep of ALL of NCSoft's MMOs combined. The myth that server upkeep for an MMO necessitate a subscription is just that - a myth. However, it is true that MMOs cost more to make, and this is why ArenaNet needs to impress you with their quality products, so that you buy their games and come back for the expansions! They would go broke if they didn't care if you were satisfied with the box because they got your money up-front. A B2P model depends on word of mouth even more than a sub.
One of the best trailers for the game I've seen
On top of all the talk about payment models, that's a lot of seriously impressive game footage.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I'm a little concerned, but I don't think my concern is really rational.
Basically, I just want this game to be as good as it possibly can and money is not really of concern for me regarding this. My only fear is that not being a sub game can always be used as an "excuse" when something doesn't live up to what it should be. Like in GW1, I always hated that you couldn't jump, but figured "well it's free to play once you buy it, so beggars can't be choosers!" And I played it anyway.
I would have never played a 3d sub game where you can't jump.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Well that video pretty much summed it all up. So move along, nothing of concern over here.
I rerally wouldn't worry so much about that because we have clearly seen that you can now jump, amongst other things XD. Well the only excuse I see fans using for GW2 is that it doesn't fit in with ArenaNet's design philosophy.
People will moan about the lack of raiding & gear progression and we would just tell them that ArenaNet doesn't want the game to have the same problems as all those other endgame-raiding-gear-centric MMORPGs. I see stuff like that being the only excuses us fans would have to make for the game.
Only concern I would have would be the younger average age of players compared to say, EVE Online, or soon; Swtor on a RP server. (At least that was my experience in GW1; the audience being fairly young).
Not having to pay a sub is a nice thing for adult players, but a deal sealer for many kids. Personally I think that Anet is very much aware of that and is aiming at a slightly younger audience considering some of their game design decisions.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Haha yes, the ability to jump was the FIRST thing I looked for in GW2 .
And I am actually really excited about GW2, more than any game in a long time. I also believe that it will deliver all the features that the devs promise. I hate raiding as well, so that's no loss for me .
The only thing I'm worried about are the "intangibles." The little things that make a game great or horrible but aren't on the feature list. Will the classes be balanced? Will the no trinity system help player cooperation or hinder it? Will there be enough interesting places to explore? Will the game be "fun?"
But as I said, there's nothing to back these concerns up. I'm just trying to be cautiously optimistic .
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
This is a good point. I pretty much agree that this could be a valid concern since I can see the fact that there is no sub model and this will attract younger people.
But then I flash back to WoW and it's $15 a month ripoff and remember how many children played that game. Not sure yet if the subless model will mean more immaturity or less but WoW proved it's not going to be dicided by a payment model. Hopefully some of the content is challenging enough to shoo away some of the people more prone to nerd rages.
As for SWTOR, I don't have an opinion if it will attract the more mature or not. Time will tell.

I am not concerned since it has obviously succeeded for GW. GW2 should sell like hot cakes. With an emphasis on should.
Im impressed with the person that made this video. He makes a very strong case
Oh, and no, Im not concerned about the no sub model.
I wouldn't never concern about a sub i have to pay for a game..
Why? cus you already pay of lot of other things in live, everyone has got a hobbys and some of them costs even more money then playing video games and upgrading your PC after 2 years orso...
And Serieously what is 15 bucks a month? dude thats even not even a hour working for most of the people on the planet..
Im confused. So, you are telling us that even though Arenanet doesnt require you to sub to this game, you are willing to pay them 15$ a month anyway? Well, I dont mind. Go ahead.
It just proves that the whole subscription fee model is one big scam, why would i pay every month for an inferior product when i can pay guild wars 2 for free? and buy new content at my own pace
Yep. . expantions plus cosmetics at a cash shop should do fine.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
