You know what, youre right. Come to think of it, i cant name a faction based mmo where opposing factions can be in a guild together. Am i missing something here?
I don't think you are missing anythng. Immagin a faction based game (let's take wow for instance). Can you see dual faction guilds? Built in spy networks. If guild members could talk in a guild chat to oposing factionsin their guild, battlegrounds would become a joke. In the secret world I believe I read (I could be wrong) that factions would "take over" territory with their faction influence. Cross faction guilds would just make for a conflict within a conflict ... in other words a mess. You could not know who was your enimy at any given time ... is it the illuminati of guild X or the dragon of guild X or even the templars of guild X or perhaps the dragons of guild Y or maybe the illuminati of guild Y, that oppose you (assuming you are a templar inguild Y). Know thine enemy I say. Any who have played eve online kinow what a gamewrecker a well placed spy can be. In a tri faction guild at any given time, two of the factions in the guild would be classified as spies depending on what the guild was doing at the moment (faction wise).
I mean, factions are put there to diferentiate your enimies from your friends. Guildmates are bands of friends, Opposing factions are enimies. Oil and water flolks, oil and water.
Having cabals be able to have members of multiple factions doesn't make sense. These people aren't exactly friends, they might come together, loosely, to combat the coming darkness but that's where their unity ends. And since there will be faction specific rewards for capturing and holding grounds, cross-faction cabals wouldn't share these with all members.
When the Dragon let their poor little, misguided Lumie and Tempie friends in their cabals they wouldn't be able to share the wealth. As well, how would it play out when the Dragon starts unravelling the secrets of an ARG. The little Lumies and Tempies will undoubtedly not be privy to their gracious hosts information...they might run back and tell their mother-factions.
So you have these little red and blue ragamuffins, no real place to belong. They can't be trusted by their benefactors in the multi-factional cabal of unity. And they can't be trusted by their parent factions because they're always hanging out with the enemy. They'd have no place to call home, lost in a lonely world slowly watching the rising tide of darkness engulf them.
I gotta say that I think The Secret World is going to be another huge mess for Funcom. I really hate the way their lore doesn't fuse into history to give it that gritty realism which might be really cool in an mmo, where the fantasy then builds on those solid roots or foundations to give us a special treat of a game.
Take for an example of how its really annoying if you have half a brain
Faction..........Funcom........where it really was at

Dragon..........@ Korea..........Bruce Lee folks ;-)
It's this type of anyoing detail that really irks. Massive pass on this one I think.
Eh, well you could look at it this way;
Sure the Templars started out in Jerusalem, but over time they expanded into Europe up untill they were deemed Heretics by the French king and the church and hunted down (The origin of Friday the 13th = bad ). Bits and pieces of the templar order are found strewn throughout Europe and even North America to this day.
The Illuminati may have started out in germanic Europe, but their influences could have spread over time as well (follow the power in hopes of gaining that power).
As for the Dragon, well, no idea on that one.
But you also have to remember that the factions in TSW are very loosely based on these 'real life' groups. In the real world the Templars and teh Illuminati are heavily based around religion and religious themes. In the game they are not due to the fact that FC wanted to stay away from as much theological debate as possible. So creative license was taken.
And who knows, maybe they will allude to the actual origins of these groups throughout the game as a special treat to us history buffs
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

If we were playing TSW at the timeline where these factions originated, I could see your point. But your argument doesnt make sense in the context of the game. Its like complaining that Americans are currently residing in the United States when clearly they originated from England.

you know nothing about the game or the lore, go to the TSW wiki / official forum or avoid posting in this subject.
The lore is just strung together nonsense as near as I can tell or why not post a coherent 250 word summary of it and prove me wrong...heck, they even have hollow world hypothesis in there. IMHO load of old bullocks!

I really don't like this forum, if you want a 250 word summary, go to the official forum of the secret world, hell, you would even get more then 1000 words there. but you are not interested in the game, otherwise you would already have gone there.

I'll cover the Templar and leave the rest to common sense or someone else to explain. The Templar did not begin in Jerusalem. Their headquarters was moved there for a short period of time, built on the Dome of the Rock. This was likely just a cover, however, for the excavation activities that they would not have wanted to be public. They were disbanded/arrested/killed and lost their headquarters along with everything else. Obviously Israel isn't about to allow them to rebuild, it's just not an option. The Templar were bankers, they traded in both money and power. Jerusalem suited them for a while, but at the current time, London would be a very plausible choice. (When they were disbanded, the only two places in/near Europe where they could safely seek refuge was Scotland and Portugal. Scotland is pretty close to London, so it wouldn't have been too big of a move

I would like to add that the illuminat were kicked from europe by the templars. so they moved to new york.
PS: we didn't even need to explain anything, the factions have no link with religion, , they are older than christ, and their goals are different.
I'm intensely puzzled as to why anyone thought I was suggesting Cabals be cross-faction. What I *did* point out is that having multiple cabals is going to be difficult for a number of guilds, because it makes it more difficult to maintain a sense of internal cohesion. If people are scattered across several groups (even just 2, I've seen this in WoW), then the meta-guild itself doesn't hold together as well.
I never ONCE suggested cabals should be cross-faction, and I'm a little irked that this is what the comments devolved to. However, I should know better by now than to be irked. /shrug
