Crafting vs. Harvesting for money, your opinion ?

Ok I'm only a level 12 Rogue.  And to be honest I have not really analyzed the auction.

But in every mmo I was never a big fan of crafting, its always been adventuring.  I play so many group dungeons that I never really have to buy anything.  But now I'm playing Rift and will need a mount soon.  I usually seem to make big money by harvesting and selling the mats on the auction.

Most auctions in mmo's are usually loaded with everyone crafting, and it seems because of this a lot of stuff that should sell for a lot are worthless.

What do you think, what's your experience, what's best to make money ?

In most MMOs I've ever played, it seems that resource sales make you more money than procuced goods.  For the couple of months I played Rift, it was no different.  Generally in most games, you can make some money from higher level crafted items, but don't make shit before that.

My philosophy, based on the games I've played, is to always use my first toon, one that I plan on levelling all the way, as mainly a resource gatherer, depending on which game you are playing.  Then sell your ore, herbs, leathers, etc and pile up money. Once you hit endgame, there is nothing wrong with respeccing one of your gathering professions and crafting to max level from there since you'll have the money to do it.

There is ALWAYS a need for gathered mats.  There is rarely a need for that level green +3 strength piece of armor you made at level 12.

You can quest your way to enough platinum. You don't even have to have any prof.

    Currently playing GW2.

I tried crafting in Rift but I soon found out that it required far to much of an investment (time, money & resources) to be worthwhile. Whereas I can pick all 3 gathering professions and have enough platinum to buy all the gear I need to do some T1s & quite possibly T2s, as soon as I hit max. Like for my Rogue, I had 100+ Hit the moment I reached 50, just fromt the gear I bought.

This has been my experience as well.  When the game gets heavy on crafters, the value of crafted goods drops due to oversupply.  At the same time the cost of raw materials goes up.  I'd suggest harvest.
