In the example of SWG SoE actually wanted to keep the servers running as they we not losing money on the deal but Lucas said NO. Lucus doesn't want competition for when ToR releases and Free SWG servers would be even worse for ToR.

actualy Smedley said nothing of the sort, and i qoute....
"John Smedley: The decision to shut down SWG is first and foremost a business decision mutually agreed upon between SOE and LucasArts. LucasArts has a new game coming out, and the contract would be running out in 2012 anyway, so we feel like it's the right time for the game to end"
Theres nothing in there about a hidden desire about keeping swg alive, and if it was a business oriented decision... you can garuntee they werent pulling in the $ they were after, thus the shut down... SoE milks its games until the Tit blows sand... if Swg is dead, its dead..

Agreed, I think SWG is so low anyways now that it have a hard time just paying for the running costs. SOE had a tough time lately and have been fireing off people the last 3 years.
Besides, it will free server space and bandwidth for their upcomming games. And LA would probably take a good fee for prolonging the license now.
If a game dies, the company needs to let people have legal, free servers of their own.
Yes, yes and yes.
why would they do that? they usually heavilly invested into the development of the game, why would they give it away for free? not to mention that it would be giving away know-how and strenghtening the competition.
Because they have a responsibillity to their customers that ones bought the game, either they leave their servers up, or they give their customers another way to play the game..... like publishing the server software... so customers can host their own games...
thats like saying that car company has responsibility to keep forever making spare parts for all cars they ever made
what dream world are you living in, guys?
Your analogy is silly. Software is not a physical object.
It only needs debugging, which the SWG community could easily handle.
Somewhere out there an entire department of bug hunters, QA engineers and debug programmers just died a little on the inside.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
I am thinking of products that have been discontinued, for no apparent good reason from my point of view.
Grocery stores used to carry a boxed product called "chocolate mint pie". Man oh man that was soooooo goooooood.
We bought 'em all the time. Then they stopped selling them. At least where I live.
I demand that they release the recipe to the general public! It's a social issue! They are preventing my pursuit of happiness! It's a constitutional issue!
Sigh.
Well, I confess, I don't just want the recipe, I want the box, so I can make the stuff easily. Making it from scratch is more effort than I really want to get into, naturally. Hehe.
I only wish that dying MMOs just die. Then maybe a better company comes and makes a better game of the same IP. Lotro and STO are 2 examples, but there are more.
So basically you believe that LOTRO should be remade by another company? I totally disaggree!!! I admit that it's pvp could be much different and better but as a PVE game is a succesful gaming embodiment of Tolkines' Lore.
