Where are the "Discovery/Exploration" Space sims with combat sprinkled in ?

I have been playing games ever since "pong" (yes im that old) and remember going over my rich cousin's house and playing "Star Raiders" on his top of the line "Atari 800" and, as I look back from then to now I just dont see a whole lot of innovation in the area of space sims

I loved star control 1,2 and even 3 ...meeting new races that might help you or kill you was so exciting but since the star control years there just doesnt seem to be much to chose from in the "discovery/exploration space sims that I would have hoped would be here by now

I have played "Eve" and enjoy it on the level that its on and while im playing it Im allways wishing that it had first person bridge views and full control of the ship .....then I wish there where alien races to converse with like they did with star trek (tv show not the game im so disappointed in the game) .Then I could just play Eve and be happy ;)

I have heard of Star Quest and like what I see but its not the graphics that I have a problem with its the point and click movement and weird camera angles that I cant get past

Then there is that "Infinity" game and I say wow gimmie that but , sadley it seems that the game will not be ready before I go blind from the waiting then die :(

Anybody have any news on a game I think alot of us want ...a good space sim with it all ?

    Started gaming on the Atari 2600 myself. =) I played Freelancer for quite soem time. It was a pretty good space sim game...but that was also YEARS ago.

     

    Haven't heard about any good space games coming out as of late....sadly. I was following the developement of Jumpgate Evolution for quite soem time, but heard it flopped. http://us.jumpgateevolution.com/

     

    Not sure what is going on with it...but it seems stalled.

    An educational "mmo" for 8 year olds, if I remember correctly. I wouldn't get your hopes up if you are expecting combat and trading and sandboxing. I could be thinking of something else though.

    X3 Terran Conflict is a pretty good space sim, a bit overwhelming though to new players. Also single player only. A pretty good cockpit mod is available if it's something you end up wanting.

    X Rebirth is also coming out at the end of this year.

    Yes I have played X3 I have it but not on this pc I seem to remember installing it from disk and it installed some program "star something" (cant remember) so I have been reluctant to re-install on this PC ...plus its hard to go back to it as its not multi player or an mmo

     

    About Vendetta I played it awhille back (even like the graphics) but I was playing with a broken joystick atm so I didnt even finish the 8 hour trial ( Im not a big fan of the realistic flight model in the game damn wing commander spoiled it for me forever)  I might give vendetta another try im sure ive missed its charm

    I was kinda hoping (and Im sure people will think me mad for liking his games) Battlecrusier online renamed galactic command would have been out by now. I really like the derrek smart idea even though I understand he is something of a mad genius so im not sure whats going on there but I am excited about watching that project as well

    And as a side note : Im sad that star wars is from what I hear going to be like wow with star wars skin (hell Im not a fan of the new star wars movies so its not a horrible loss for me) Very sad to see star war galaxy go away and do hope someone get to make an updated version of it

    For now I play my first love : WWIIONLINE (battleground europe) waitng for my space sim to come out
