Rift: PAX & The Chronicles of Telara

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

At PAX, MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy caught up with the Rift team and got an inside look at the upcoming 1.5 patch. With new "raids" geared to decked out solo players or pairs of players, The Chronicles of Telara dungeons will allow all players access to areas that might never been seen if not a member of a large group or due to a lack of time. Check out Bill's thoughts about The Chronicles of Telara and then let us know what you think in the comments.

“It’s not dumbed down from the raid,” Simon said. “It’s a completely new tale inside of our existing dungeon. It’s for two people, but if you’re already geared up, you could conceivably do this solo. Some of our guys already have.” When I asked about the gear rewards you’d receive from these Chronicles, Simon told me it’s about Tier 1 equivalent, and that of course will change as more Chronicles are released and the gear skews upward. This was good news to me, because I never really thought I’d see anything near raid equivalent gear.

As a gamer who doesnt have the time to commit to raids this looks appealing. I am looking forward to trying it out.

Now this sounds like fun, instead of the mind numbing way other games have it laid out.. Can't wait to get higher level to try this out!! :)

What I find weird is that the writer says he doesnt have time to do raids anymore.
Yet, at the end of the article he says that the raid this ingenious Chronicle is based on only takes 2 to 4 hours to complete.

If you dont have 2 to 4 hours to devote to an endgame raid throughout the week then you are most definitely in the wrong genre.

When I was raiding in Rift my guild raided for 3 hours a night, 2 nights a week on the weekend and we were able to complete all current content.
Raiding in Rift is not hard and is not something you have to devote hours upon hours to every night.

These Chronicles are an interesting idea but 30 minute duo dungeons that give you epic gear? Not even WoW is that casual friendly.

I think he means he can't commit to sign on at a specific time each night to raid. Instead, he can sign on whenever he is able to, and actually accomplish something.

No reason to be a hater.

Ah, so you know exactly what the article writer meant when he said "I just don't have the time anymore".

You must be some kind of mind reader or something.

Additionally, you are so confident in your ability to read minds that you feel it necessary to personally insult me.

Yes, don't be a hater indeed.

On topic, this looks interesting, and since I work all sorts of shifts and cannot commit to a raiding guild for any specific amount of raids per week, this will give me something to do on my 3 50s and something to aim for on my soon to be 4th.

    I'm confused, the writer says:

When I asked about the gear rewards you’d receive from these Chronicles, Simon told me it’s about Tier 1 equivalent, and that of course will change as more Chronicles are released and the gear skews upward.

    Then goes on to state:

This was good news to me, because I never really thought I’d see anything near raid equivalent gear.

However, T1 is not raid equivalent gear, far from it in fact. Am I missing something here?

Damn I really wish this had of come out before i quit rift... Just dont have the time anymore myself to commit to a raiding schedual, and i mean honestly with work, family, and friends who does have the time to commit to 3 days a week of raiding.. I mean even if its only 3 hours a night that is three hours you must be at your desk (after already being at a desk 8 hours a day for work) Anyways good idea Trion you may have convinced me to play your game until skyrim comes out.

Unless they are referring to T1 raid gear, rather than T1 dungeon gear.

    Gear goes T1 - T2 - T1 Raid - T2 Raid

this is a  brilliant idea the amount of times ive been waiting for a group to do a dungeon  and i have  so little time to play

i wish all mmo's would do this

i too cant access high level raids its not because i dont have 4 hours its because i cant  say which day ive got 4 hours

    so for me its perfect

    well done to rift

    No.

Gear tiers are: T1, T2, T3 (gear from tier 1 raids) and T4 (gear from tier 2 raids).

There is also 2.5, which are drops from GP and/or Raid Rifts.

So the question is: Did the rep from Trion mean Tier 1 Gear, or Tier 3 gear? It's very confusing the way it is worded.

I tried to understand what new this brings to Rift. I am done with that game. It is SO much just kill stuff and nothing else. It was fun one time to max level make a few instances, but after that my interest entirely died. I felt it was such a simplistic and "reduced" MMO. And this just looks like more combat instances. *shrug*

I think PAX really illustrates the problem Rift has as an MMORPG. It isn't a bad game, it just isn't a show stealer or prize winner now.

ya commitement has their perk but also some drawback!

Hmm, most people on my server refer to GSB, etc as T1 raids, and hence gear at that level as T1 raid gear.  While that may not be "official" it seems pretty common.

It's T1,T2,T1 Raid (GSB,RoS,DH,GP) then T2 Raid which is Hammerknell the new solo/duo dungeons will be T1 Raid gear

This seems to be confusing people:

    Source: http://forums.riftgame.com/public-test-shard/250697-pts-test-9-1-chronicle-hammerknell-fortress.html

""- The rewards are equivalent to Tier 1 Expert Dungeon blue rarity items.""

Master Modes: The new difficulty level of current instances with some added bosses and very intense mechanics will drops "T1 RAID loot"

This first Chronicle atleast is made to help new people to level 50 get some gear and vanity items like the water event hat or Murdantix mount.

Well for me was equaly fun leveling 2 alts to max, now 2 to go, both aprox 33. So many original ideas, bugless, ... And now that end game will be also available also for working people I love it even more. In same sense would prefer to have raids and shorter, managable "heroics", but still happy.

While I prefer group content myself this make sense.

To make the entire game solofriendly except the endgame is just stupid, either you cut the solocontent all together or you make an endgame for those players as well.

I am really surprised that Wow havn't done this years ago.

  • marganculosmarganculos Member UncommonPosts: 334

cool, solo raids?! im goin resub when 1.5 will be out :D

  • CelciusCelcius Member RarePosts: 1,878

The Chronicle is T1 DUNGEON blue gear as far as I have seen mostly. (Ran it on the test server) There may also be an epic item at the end, but it was not included yet. It is not T1 Raid gear, that will be from master modes. It is also not "more casual epics then WoW" as someone mentioned earlier in the thread. In WoW you can run a 30 minute dungeon and get epics off every single boss.

    I find your reply excellent!!

Rift, WoW, Aion are built on solo leveling schemes. But, when the players hit cap level, the companies expect them to just "play together". Then people start to whine "waaa the communities are bad'... well no wonder, who would expect anything else out of this model? Yes, solo dungeons will be a great addition to these already washed-out games. Most players play them like single player games with "henchmen" anyways,

Why does Vanguard, despite of being incredibly tedious and full of bugs, have a much much much better community than other theme parks? Because there your reputation precedes you, you act stupid, people will avoid you, ignore you, and you cannot do anything alone.

I dunno I spend a lot of time in Rift in groups... only level 29 but I'd say I've spent a lot more time in group content then doing the solo-quest grind.

Between Rifts, Invasions, PvP matches, and dungeon runs I've spent a lot of time grouped...

That being said, anything that gives more/unique content at the level cap is a good thing. Will be fun to go through these solo/duo instances a couple of times.

I guess I'm only 3-4 levels above the quest content - 29 and just finished Gloomwood.
