I personally can't wait for this paticular aspect of GW2, and would even go as far as saying I want it to be the first thing I try. (Maybe after I try Kyhlo, anyway)
I remember back when I was muckin' about in Aion at release that many were disoriented by the flight combat and all of it's multiple directions and what not. I felt pretty at home and I had a movement advantage over thosewho were stuck on the concept of ground combat and struggled keeping up in the air.
I'm excited to see if I'll still have that edge at launch if they have underwater-only pvp maps.
Sinking and rising and all that stuff also seems really interesting.
I read that the further down you go underwater, the harder it is to see due to haze covering your screen, something useful to remember if you're trying to make an escape, either by sinking your enemy or maybe even retreating into the dark yourself. I hope it's that strong of a mist to where you can't see in front of you.

Anything that adds another possible tactical element to be considered is fine by me.
I love how they are making the underwater aspect of the game usefull rather than something lame like every other game. But i wont know for sure how well it is until i try it.

.. that's pretty much my feelings on it.
Underwater PvP could be nice, but it'd work better as part of a full map, with people swapping between underwater and normal combat.
Be sort of like having a map where everybody is manning trebuchets, but nobody gets out and hits the other person with a weapon.
In general I'm not a fan of underwater anything in an MMORPG (or any other 3D asdw game). I don't feel it translates well to keyboard control. To me, the control issue is just too awkward and detracts from gameplay.
I thought 3D asdw worked pretty well with Descent...
So did I. Cool game btw. Part of that system was zero G. In Descent we could roll over and fly upside down. Z wasn't special. (OT: speaking of which wouldn't that system make a kickin space MMORPG? It would have to come with a nausea bag because so many got vertigo from it.)
Underwater in games* Z is treated as special. There's pitch and yaw, but no roll. Of course this is good for a submarine because the characters inside the enclosure would fall to the ceiling if she rolled.
One related issue is if the minimap only provides 2D representation. In Cata I had problems finding mobs because I was Z- several dozen meters but had no way of knowing it. On ground it's a non-issue.
I'm not critical of GW2 because of water zones. Just that I had issues adapting in other games. My problem, not the software's. It will be interesting to see how it is implemented.
* = at least anything I've played with underwater environments which isn't many. Only recent is WoW Cata.
no, if Aion thought me anything is that I don't want Z-Axis PvP, be it underwater or flying.
And any implementation of it is going to be rather crap
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
The PvP in Aion was just retardedly unbalanced atleast in the air when Sorc's just could 1 shot people and you had no way to counter it really.(Played Galdiator and what could I do when I was not max level , no max gear etc,)
But well GW2 will have way better balance ofc, so this might be fun or not so fun. Although sure I have to test it out and see how it plays out, but for now I'm not that excited about underwater combat > neither PvE and PvP.
Basically this. Not to rain on everyones parade, but we have done z axis pvp before, but we had wings. NOW TO NOTE NCSoft in my view is one of the most fails dev the inhistory of history and can never do anything right.
The problem with Z Axis pvp was the following:
1. Ranged automatically had a advantage because their coold downs were lower then a melee characters charge ability, so you could not close the gap and you got kited like a fool.
2. AoE abilities were basically useless. AoE abilities work on a x and y axis and are not made in a frontal conal fashion.
If ArenaNET can overcome the above, then yes it can be tremendously fun.
NC soft is great on one thing: paying up so ANET can make GW2.
But yes, underwater PvP is rather different from regular PvP. To have some part of a map underwater works fine enough but large underwater maps will take a lot of work and balancing. It is not something you just add quickly.
All classes in GW2 do have ranged weapons so at least that makes it somewhat easier.
Why would anyone want to pvp under water? what a terrible idea, you would have to make everything so slow that it would be no fun. Imagine if you had people swinging swords at full speed and shooting fireballs / arrows in the water, well good bye immersion.

I'll bite,
While I am agaisn't underwater combat you comment just makes you look like a troll, if you knew anything about GW2 before bashing it like you go to the trouble of doing in multiple threads you would know that underwater combat atm in GW2 is fast, the weapons change from Swords and Axes to water weapons, like tridents, and guns change to arpoons, "fireballs" change to boiling water and so on. So immersion is pretty much covered here, as we will already have underwater maps with PvE content.
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
Having a warzone with a lake in the middle of it or something would be the way to go that way people could choose to go in it or not, maybe have a domination map where one of the nodes is underwater taht would be cool.
Here you go, have a look.
Maybe immersion is covered in your eyes but not mine. Fast paced underwater combat? Immersion breaker right there, unless your character is going to turn into a mermaid. Nothing with 2 legs can move well under water even if naked let alone with a suit of armor and weapon. I know it's a fantasy game but there are jus some properties in RL that have to stay consistant to make the game believable IMO.
Also this is my first post actually bashing the game. All my others have been directed towards the fan base and their ridiculous attacks on anyone who tries to point out flaws in their precious love child.

Maybe I've missed it, but was there any mention about underwater PvP combat in the WvWvW department? Given that these map(s) they'll be using for it are so huge one could assume that they might have an underwater segment as well, no? Perhaps a lake or something with secret tunnels leading elsewhere?
Straight out 5v5 underwater matches would probably end up being a chore, but using underwater content as strategic means to advance in WvWvW? That would be interesting.
Adding the 3rd dimension to mmo is great, it had a lot of balance issues in Aion, but you can't do anything if you don't try. I love the underwater of GW2 and the flying chinese feature of Blade & Soul. The Blade& Soul flying is just great, seam to bug a bit on some map parts, but its just an awsome feeling for the player imo, definitly something i would love to have in my mmos.
I think people should seriously learn how to make proper polls before making them.
As for question - yes i lik the idea of underwater pvp.
Arena Net has really worked hard to make underwater combat and exploration fun. They've removed the hassles, you have weapons (and the associated skills) that only work underwater and they add the Z-Axis with out adding flying and the issues that creates.
So, I see no reason why there wouldn't be some form of Underwater PVP. The simple way to do so is with an underwater Competitive PVP arena. However, I wouldn't rule a lake in the World vs. World vs World area which would place some of the action under water.
I think it would be a blast and really offer something new to the mix.

Way to prove my point, I almost died laughing when i read your post. see earlier post and youll get it
You dont even post your opinion on the underwater combat you just see somone dislike somthing about your precious game and immediately attack with childish insults. Just because somone has a different opinion on somthing doesnt make them wrong, but youll learn that as you grow.
Back to the topic at hand, I think having a lake in the middle of the WvWvW would work well that way you could chose to participate or not

I hate underwater questing / mob killing / whatever you want to call it... In my mind as well having been under water, there is not much movement, so combat would be sort of phoney. I kinda laughed always watching mage fireballs and stuff under water.. There's a million reasons why I hate it, I cant think of any why I would enjoy it
Mostly the reason though is because its annoying, breathing, unclear distortion, slow moving.... etc
I simply think its a waste of time, although water and travel in it is welcome.
What I would think is cool is having boats and stuff, something I dont think many have done.. A player or party can go on a boat,
and as they go across the water, they can fight things they see that are shallow and get loot, then bigger monsters might come try to eat the boat, so the pilot has to be careful, then maybe a big monster comes out and you have to cast and use ranged on it.. or be right next to it and fight it... that would be cool

IRL you can't run non-stop (or at all, depending on how bulky the armor is), or jump higher than about an inch, or do fancy dodge rolls, or a host of other things that not only GW2 but countless other fantasy games allow you to do with with heavy armor and multiple heavy steel weapons equipped. I don't see how underwater combat is unique in this regard.
Underwater combat looks incredibly fun in GW2 !
They have managed to change imposible skills (like trowing fire balls underwater) for more convincing ones (mages making the water boil).
YES! I´m willing to try that out!
Actually i think is the first PvP i´m willing to try.
A PvP based on skill rather than in gear....or valor points....or superduper OverPowered builds.
Some are going to CRY!!!! Hard!!!! hahahahahahaha
