According to the MMOG chart around 30,000 still play. Which is kind of sad when you think about how AC1 really is far superior to most other games except graphically.
There certainly quite a few of people left in the game. Not as many as once were, and some servers can be pretty quiet.
Most of the people I know have left for other games, as I will probably be doing too. The cost per month is getting a little steep for me. It's a good game, and I've been playing since just after beta, but for me it's probably time to move on. Some other great games out there, and some have no monthly fee, so I'm leaning towards them. Been playing the beta versions of them and they are pretty good.
Anyways, I digress. I'm going to be sad to leave, but I have 5+ years of great memories to remember.
I beleive you can download the full game with DM for free now, they consider it all one client. A current player will either tell me I am wrong or right shortly I am sure.

"What happened to you, Star Wars Galaxies? You used to look like Leia. Not quite gold bikini Leia (more like bad-British-accent-and-cinnamon-bun-hair Leia), but still Leia nonetheless. Now you look like Chewbacca." - Computer Gaming World
Is it still possible to play if one only have a good old AC (no expansions at all)? If so which server is most interesting to play on?
Yes, you can still play with the original AC. They upgraded people who didn't have the expansion pack and gave it to them. You can install the game and setup your account, but it will take time to download all the updates.
Many people still play. A lot of people have left, but it seems a large percentage of them eventually return. Most leave to play a new game and are gone for a few months and come back. Many never come back.
Overall there is still a decent population and there will be a lot more people playing b/c of the expansion pack and b/c of the agreement with Sony to distribute the game.
