Depth in a MMO, well then if it has depth then it may be a hybrid MMO sandbox/thempark all rolled into one perhaps?
Expansive World PVP, with objectives like DAOC/SWG type ranking system/ and planetary control/bases/invasions/RVR?
3 Faction System?
Player Housing/ Decorate House/ Internal Database where it stores items on its on server?
Mission Creator? Chronicle Type System
Foraging/Treasure Hunting?
Collections?
Achievements?
Titles/Badges?
Vet Reward System?
Proper Space Component/ Epic Space Battles and Invasions?
Atmospheric Flight?
Crafter Professions/Social Professions/ Cantina Type Activities
Casino Games/ Minigames (Racing-Sports)
and the list goes on and on if one MMO in development in the future can offer all of these in a sci-fi/fantasy MMO even if its added later after launch I would be a happy panda, but will Wildstar have these things? Or is it just another gear and token grind carrot on a stick game. Don't get me wrong I like the style Wildstar has going for it and the way their roles are looking , looking foward to hearing more about scientist, but until u can show me that their moving away from the WoW forumula I will always be skeptical.
Well if they have classes and levels, there will not be any depth, your avatar will be just like every other avatar of that particular skillset
So the sandboxers are now getting to own and control what depth means in the industry. lol. I didn't vote for it.
You cannot have depth when your avatar is shoehorned into a class/level system, there is no flexibility in developing your character, you have to fit the mold they give you.
And you know for a fact there is no depth within the same class?
It's not a case of sandboxers controlling what depth means. It's been an understood, though apparently not by some here, that depth has always meant and having many, many options. A class system by definition prevents it from being this. You only get those things that are in your class structure. A game with depth allows you to pick from all things available within the game.
So, look at UO, early SWG, Darkfall, Asheron's Call or any game that allows you, the player, to put together a combination of skills as opposed to picking a pre-packaged "class".
Oh, and honestly, if you look at 99% of the class based games, the "new" abilities you get as you move toward level cap are for the most part re-hashes of earlier abilities. Depth implies variety. Rehash is not variety.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

You can have many, many options without necessarily being able to pick everything and anything.
Kill 10 saber-tooths, and I'm givin a choice to skin them, investigate them, or kill off the boss tiger and save the town. Sounds like I'm still killing 10 tigers yet they've found a way to keep me in a quest longer that has nothing to do with the larger story line.
I already feel trapped by kill 10 x beasts why would I feel the need to "trap" myself even longer.
Now have me fight through a hoard of saber-tooths to get to a boss laying siege to a town with no number required for me to kill because killing the boss would make the minions flee then you'll have my attention.
I don't understand people who say shit like this.
What is it would you rather do in an MMO? Fucking really!
You want to level while stand in a city or town with your thumb up your ass.
MMORPGs used to be about much more than combat. In several MMOs prior to WoW, there were alternative methods of participating within the MMORPG that didn't revolve around combat. In example, crafting used to be a fully fleshed out and engaging path that players could take. Other such examples are players being able to buff others, remove long term state debuffs, get other players from one point to another more easily, etc.
In other words, some players want to play in an MMO that's more of a virtual world, and not just an online hack and slash combat simulator.

Sure you can. But that game doesn't have as much depth as a game where you can pick everything and anything. Especially if those options are rehashes of earlier abilities.

I'd have to see it to believe it. Because if that was going to be done, that would mean that Class A would have access to all of Class B and C's options. In which case why even go the "Class" route. Just go skill based and let players pick and choose which skills they want.

You seem awfully upset over the fact that other people enjoy gameplay aspects that aren't combat centric. Yes, the games that use to feature extensive non-combat content aren't as popular today, and many of their players have left. In fact, this has expressly happened because the games were changed to remove, dumb down, or otherwise trivialize the non-combat roles in said games.
So what's wrong with people looking forward to a game that offers gameplay aspects that have been woefully neglected over the past seven plus years? If you want to play an MMO that exclusively features combat, go right ahead, there's dozens of them out on the market right now. There are not, on the other hand, any recent MMOs that even attempt to offer gameplay that isn't largely grounded around combat.
In other words, if you don't like the idea of non-combat roles that's your choice, but stop trying to bring down people who like more breadth and depth to their games than mindless hack and slash combat.
looks like an intresting game but i have to wonder if two, three, or five+ peeps play together and quest will there games be all over the place? will grouping with an explorer if your a solder mean you'll have to get to the top of the mountin like your friend but the quest hub wont be there for ya or you cant get them? maybe you wont even be able to get to the hard to get to place because you have none of the explore special moves and site . . will a combat event trigger in the middle of an explorer gauntlet making things a pain in the [], meaning he wont want to group with ya. will you slow him down? lots of questions in more games if your a bonded to another character you get more benifits then just by grouping with a stranger, i'd like to see this in wildstar as well as guild wars 2 and the star wars mmo coming out.

"Back in the day" was great until WoW woke up the masses of young social bacteria. MMOs turned into a mainstream myspace/facebook/twitter "all about me" epedemic. It wasn't about the nerd anymore. It's not about the nerd, the jock, the thug, and the hottie...
Complexity shifts toward simplicity. Simplicity shifts toward mass youth sales. Mass youth sales shift future developer innovation into "play it safe" cash clones.

It's funny how you say that I'm trying to bring people down. Im simply returning the favor! You guys do it all the time. Just read these post on all these boards so many of you bitch and whine about the stupidest shit about these up coming games.
I understand everyone has preferance of what type of games they like and that's great nothing wrong with that. But some of these games have yet to be release and some people already know what to expect responding negatively.

Slowdoves you didn't either read the articel or just the first sentence of my post or both.
MMO's need to move beyond the kill X get Y standard. All I proposed based on the example given in the article was it would be more fun (for me) if I had to kill X but had to fight my way through some minions to get to X and killing X would make the minions flee.
I save the town and then get Y. Just sound a little more dynamic and involved than their proposal in the article. Nothing about standing in a city with a thumb up my butt.

So create your own game that doesn't cater to simplicity. Keep it exclusive amounst your friends and friends of friends your so called like minded nerd people. Try it and show us it can work!
Oh, wait! You want someone else to make that game for you. But those games were already made,. Where are they now?
Many of you so called nerds didn't have enough loyalty to stick around to keep those games going.
It does look a lot like a Pixar movie, and I am not sure I could play that for very long. Also, I am not sure if I can have more than one path. I like all of those things. I want to be able to do all of those things, regardless of my class. My class shouldn't preclude a whole host of activities.
I also agree that depth is possible with a class/level system, but it is hard to achieve, and, frankly, it is impossible to get the level of depth of a game like Ryzom or Eve. It's just not possible, regardless of which you like better.
Edit:
I want to add that depth is also more about creating a virtual world, as some have also said. Just running around killing isn't enough. There need to be other things in the world, other ways for players to distinguish themselves. There was a time when someone could make a name for themselves without fighting much at all, by being a crafter who provided top-level goods. There was a time when games were about more than "go here, kill that, and now go here, and kill that other thing." That gets boring fast.

No one knows exactly what to expect from a game until it's actually released. Anyone who states otherwise is lying through their teeth, because they don't have a clue unless they themselves have actually played the final product. That goes for both this game, and any other upcoming game.
And yes, there are posters on this site who can be overly critical of upcoming themepark games. But the difference between them and you is that many of them actually discuss and debate the issue, not just bash and put down a game and those interested in it for being the way it is.
Honestly, what do you hope to accomplish by bashing a game you seem to have no interest in playing?
Oh man. I watched the trailer, Just the trailer made me intersted and thats hard to say, Especially since NCsoft is the publisher. But it made me laugh. I wished it was longer, i expected something kinda lame and boring like most MMOs do for a trailer. But it was like a very short movie.
"Every form of life on this planet is precious.......except that one" lol, you are right, if was like a little movie. Bet they make more of those before launch. This game wasn't even on my radar but now I want to play it.
"Deepest mmorpg" We'll just see yet another world of warcraft clone amirite? Since pretty much every mmo ends up being just that. Its a trend sadly . its made me pretty much quit mmo's tired of pointless endgame with no real purpose to getting the raid gear, boring onrails quest systems etc etc. If the game is diffrent well good for it, but I won't hold my breath.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

We may get another WoW clone, or we may not. I'm not holding my breath either, but I will keep an eye on the game. How well the devs follow through on their plans remains to be seen, but the idea of trying to appeal to the spectrum of Bartle classifications is something that's not been done in a long while. I'm getting very bored of MMOs that only focus on the same lackluster combat over the past decade.
Rather than be cynical I am just going to say wow does this sound very very good.
If this game were coming out tomorrow and lived up to their goals I would cancel my SWToR pre-order, forget about the other new games on the way and dive in here. Yeah they kind of sold me in that interview, hahhahaa.
Guess we will see how the development goes and if they can reach these lofty goals for us all
Don't mean squat if someone bought a copyright on the name. But I can't see any legal documentation from GW saying they did, I just went and looked. Not even in Codex: Eldar.
Still, wouldn't hurt to change the name up a little.
You can't copyright a single word...copyright is protecting a distinctive BODY of work. You can TRADEMARK a single word but you can't prevent someone from using in it's common usage if it has one. For example, a fruit seller couldn't prevent a competitor from using the word "apple" in one of thier sales flyers as long as that reference was to the fruit, not to the name of the business. Trademarks sole legitimate function is to prevent consumers from being confused about which business entity they are dealing with....not to cordon off words from common usage.

Well, I am hoping this game may move back in that direction with the amount of activities the marketing team is stating will be in game.
I just signed up for Beta, hope to see these features in action

Well, maybe you have more options in the same class than you have as a whole in other "sandbox" games

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
WTF? No subscription fee?
No one knows exactly what to expect from a game until it's actually released. Anyone who states otherwise is lying through their teeth, because they don't have a clue unless they themselves have actually played the final product. That goes for both this game, and any other upcoming game.
And yes, there are posters on this site who can be overly critical of upcoming themepark games. But the difference between them and you is that many of them actually discuss and debate the issue, not just bash and put down a game and those interested in it for being the way it is.
Honestly, what do you hope to accomplish by bashing a game you seem to have no interest in playing?
"Every form of life on this planet is precious.......except that one" lol, you are right, if was like a little movie. Bet they make more of those before launch. This game wasn't even on my radar but now I want to play it.

New pornsite?
Nah man, it's Wildstar: PAX - The Deepest MMORPG. Ever.
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
The game is already DOA if the devs are even thinking about listening to the players.
Guess we will see how the development goes and if they can reach these lofty goals for us all
You can't copyright a single word...copyright is protecting a distinctive BODY of work.
So will it have more items and skills than AO? Will it have real twinking? Or what kind of depth they are talking about?
BTW, could you avoid multi quoting whole conversations?
You mean you don't like quote pyramids?!? :P
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I need to take this advice more.
Well, I am hoping this game may move back in that direction with the amount of activities the marketing team is stating will be in game.
I just signed up for Beta, hope to see these features in action
