What If: Star Wars Galaxies Relaunched

Hello MMORPG.Com im new to the community here, so excuse me for bieng a little nieive or a bit newbish. also excuse any spelling errors this forum dosent exacly have good spellcheck. image

I'm a long time gamer so I've seen my way around the industry, I've played many titles. Right now one of those titles is star trek online, but I have played others, like the one this thread is about. I thought my first post should be something thought provovoking and a current concern for some, so I picked a what if topic as my first try. and slso, If this topic garners enouph intrest, I may even try similar topics like this as an anual basis.

Since we all know star wars galaxies is going to shut down later this year, I thought now would be a great time to explore the good, the bad, and the slightly ugly, parts of the game itself. Allot of thing's about the game were of one of the three catagories, So I wont get into debates of why they were good bad or otherwise. But that bieng said, I do want to explore them for the sake of getting to what they can mean for the industry of online gaming as a whole.

Well, for starters lets go with the what if,

What if Star Wars Galaxies relaunched?

In terms of what ifs, I want to ask this gaming community here the above question.

What if Star Wars Galaxies relaunched under a new title, or company?

Do you think it should be relaunched? If it did, what would you like to see changed? What company would you like to see making it?  Would it play differently, of would it be simply a reworked version of the same old game with newer graphics? Would it use a new gaming engine, or would it use the same one it does now? would you play it? and if not why?

I really want to speculate on what was good , and what was bad, I want to get dowen and dirty, and see what previous players want out of the game itself, and even get what some who have never played it may think would make them want to.

Feel free to post up your thoughts on this, I would love to hear what you would do to the game if you had some say in what it would be, if it were relaunched as a new title.

It would probably be more profitable to just transplant the most liked features into a new game. SWG is too old, long in the tooth and has such a bad reputation that a plain relaunch, even tweaked, wouldn't see much success IMO.

I think it would have a chance as long as it was not put out by SOE or EA and if Lucas Arts left it alone. However, I think a better idea would be to take the game and give it a graphic overall while keeping pre-NGE gameplay. Unfortunately its not gonna happen and likely a new Star Wars MMO will only be revisited after ten years and when SWTOR has played out.

I, for one, loved SWG even after the NGE (once I got used to it) but even I am ok with seeing the title die. I would not want anyone to remake the game or re-release it for the simple fact, like most MMOs these days, it would just be another WoW knockoff. I heard rumors that SOE is producing a sequel to SWG but that is just a rumor. As of SWTOR launch, that will be my fix for Star Wars.

R.I.P. SWG, you lived a long, healthy life, got to see wonderous things, experience the best and worst the MMO community had to offer, now it's time to say our fairwells and you will be missed.

SWG could only successfully relaunch if it was the Pre-CU version.. and its never going to happen..  so, when its gone.. its gone forever.. image

If it relaunched the exact same as it launched orignally it would crash and burn.

If you took the game as it was right before the CU, and spent another 18 months balancing and making content before launch it would be a hit.

Yup.  I fail to see how relaunching the original swg wouldn't result in the same failure.

It would do much worse, because there is less tolerance for poorly launched games then when SWG launched.  WoW/Rift level polish isnt a must, but at least being fairly bug free with content in place (*cough* ffxiv *cough*).  SWG at launch was awful, unless you liked crafting for your main activity.  that worked right out of the box.

Is it that time again already? It seems to come around so quickly maybe it's a sign of age.

    Gotta agree!

SWG launched at a PERFECT time and it was a PERFECT title for an MMO. High speed Internet was just becoming mainstream, online games were new to most people, VERY limited competition, no true 3rd axis, no collision, SWG did a LOT right...but there were also a ton of negatives. The plethora of bugs, broken promises, unbalanced gameplay, incomplete quests and classes, one character per server - things that simply would kill a game today.

As mentioned above - the best thing to do would be to take the things that SWG did right, and build a new SWG off of that.

Id Say launch it right at the point of just a few weeks before the CU...... Cannot forget all the things we hated like waiting for shuttles wookies didnt wear armor. Besides LA isnt going to release another game to SOE while SWTOR is coming out. I do like the idea of taking that pre cu model coming up with a new game idea and updating the graphics though. The Character classes were awesome. If the SWG ppl that left and went over to Fallen earth would change fallen earth to the pre cu model of swg.... now that would be something special

It wouldn't do any better than what it is doing right now. Plenty of people have had the oppertunity to play the game and most have chosen to stay away from it. The game is simply not fun to play and no amount of rebranding is going to change that. In fact, it already HAS been rebranded multiple times and nothing worked. No company worth anything would want to touch it because there isn't anything they could really do with it.

The best option for a company given the right to make a game from the original trilogy era would be to dump the game and start from scratch.

SWG was fun but they would have to:

    -update the graphics engine

-create code that the server wouldnt crash when a 50 vs 50 battle happens

-they wouldn't need 1-2 hrs daily to restart the servers at the daily DT.

-add more content then the bare would SWG was at launch

-have a different developer/hosting company (certainly NOT $$$$OE)

-it would have to be a sandbox, not a spoonfeeding themepark game.

Think that would do it for me......

Star Wars didn't do very wellt he first time BEFORE the NGE, so why does anyone think it would hold subs this time?

I played it, and I quit long before the NGE, just like most of the people who quit. The game lacked terribly.

  • Honestly once they did the combat upgrade it all went to hell. If they released an original version of SWG where I could headshot people and rofl as they tumble down in a single shot because their mind was allocated so low then sure.

I would re-sub to the CU Version...Nothing else...Was not a big Fan of Pre-CU or the NGE...But I LOVED the CU...I could send out one bulk email and get a minimum of 10 people to join me too...I still play other Games with a bunch of them, and we all enjoyed the CU immensely...image
