Maybe Im missing something here but isnt it strange, that in 2011 we had only one major release (Rift) and maaaaybe SW will be released in nov-dec. Whereas 2012 is filled with major releases: gw2, tera, d3, ArcheAge, TSW, blade and soul, next wow AddOn(who knows how many F2Ps). Isn't it, from a management/economic point of view, a failure? You release your big thing during the time where it would have the most business competition.
I somehow understand Blizzard. They dont really care, because D3 is somewhat a different genre and doesnt really fit in the mmorpg trash bin. And the next WoW AddOn will most likely release dec 2012.
I also understand AreaNet to some degree. GW2 is not a pure mmorpg and with the huge fan base it will probably crush every other game. However, D3 and wow addon are still big threats.

Diablo 3 is a threat to action RPGs not to MMOs. And how is GW2 not a "pure MMORPG"?
Anyhoo... I bet Blizzard's newest expansion to World of Warcraft will have some form of dynamic events. Being a market leader, their's doesn't even have to be better than what DEs are in GW2 or what they were in Rift. They just need to be "good enough" and their huge fanbase has little reason to switch to something else.
It is always like that with market leaders: Copy your competitors "well enough" and let your position do the rest. Has worked for Microsoft for years now.
The new trend of having more active combat is something that WoW can't copy however. Or I'd be very surprised if they did.

Sure... Just like GF/wife aggro is a threat to MMOs.

There is some illusion to 'next' years releases. It has always been like that. Since MMO's have the habit of being pushed back a year, sometimes two or three years. Next year usually always seems like a bigger year than this year. You get a combination of games not being pushed back yet, and games from this year already being pushed back.

GW2 is not a "pure" MMORPG, huh? Uhm....where are you getting your information? GW2 is NOT GW1 with newer graphics. You need to read up on GW2. Here's a thread that has tons of beautifully organized information.
Everything We Know About GW2
On topic: Games release when they're ready. I'm sure some of it has to do with when the competition is releasing too. I'm not sure there's anything to the 2011 and 2012 releases. They're releasing when they're ready to release. Just my opinion. If you think there's some conspiracy behind it maybe you should play TSW. Just playin'.

@quir, from my point of view D3 is a threat for mmorpgs. It is an online multiplayer rpg. It has a character creator, AH, Arena PVP - things that make it more similiar to mmorpgs. On top of that its Blizzard and its Diablo.. Diablo 2 was a disease back then and a huge part of the D2 community moved on to wow. At least for me it is a sign that HnS rpgs share their communities to some degree with mmorpgs (same interests).
Back in my Aion time I met a lot of ppl who talked about D3, just like during my Rift tour.
@darkness, It wasnt my intention to flame GW2. Ok, then it is a pure mmorpg now, but thats not the point of the thread. If it is a pure mmorpg, then its even more threatening for others.
@Joli, as long as they dont push a few games on my list back to 2013, its not an illusion. The only game that could be pushed back to 2013 is blade and soul.
@just1, I dont like Lost or Jack Bauer. I highly dislike religion, myths, astrology, conspiracy theories or stuff based solely on a subjective opinion or a glue sniffing session. Im talking about a business thing going wrong. Its only a prediction, but a good one. Pretty sure that all games on my list will be released in 2012, which could lead to unnecessary market competition.
After watching a Diablo 3 beta stream for an hour the other day before Blizz told the streamer to stop all I can say is the game is aimed at the young teens of today. It's lost the feel established in the first two games as they aim it at a new young generation.
In a perfect world yes. Most MMOs tends too launch far too early.
But you are right, few companies could afford waiting to launch a costly game like a MMO months in the hope it might affect competitors... I could see Blizzard doing it actually but no one else.
When a game is done you want to release it ASAP.
That's partially hindsight bias. If a highly anticipated game flops, then you don't count it as a major release after it releases. You would have counted it as an upcoming release a previous year, though. For example, DCUO. Other 2011 releases that got some attention on this site before launching but not much since then include Earthrise, Gods and Heroes, and Black Prophecy.
Even which games count as major releases can be altered long after the fact. At the end of 2003, if you were asked which major MMORPGs released in 2003, you probably wouldn't have bothered to mention EVE. But from a distance of several years later, how can you say that wasn't a major release?
Im currently playing 3 MMOs, your point?
But not really, it's like the console wars ~ or 50 cent vs Kanye ~ blu ray vs HD ~ and all those sorts of shenanigans. Bsaically it creates a larger ruckus over the products involved, and the companies releaseing the games will get a chance to say that they are the "winner" ~ not that any will concede to being the "loser" ~ just they'll be spinning their game's strong points against the immediate competition, even moreso than usual. "Best PVP in 2012" ~ "Largest Launch of 2012" ~ "Most Critically Acclaimed of 2012" ~ "'Beats the competion in crafting by a mile...' - some buy with a blog on a website, 2012"
It's not a bad thing, really. To go into a big hype-fest like this, the publishers have to have a metric crapton of confidence that they'll be able to take something from the competition, rather than the other way around.
also: 2011 has really been a big year for f2p games ~
