Hey guys! i feel i should talk about how tedious games have become and how when we start new charecters they are defined and recognised by their weapons and clothing all the way through the game. how other people can see your class and know your ablities without actually playing it them selves. i call this class recognition and i hate it!
i think its about time that we had games where you cant tell what class people are by simply looking at the charecter and what armour they wear or what charecter creation options where available to them. lets face it in all games today we know who is what just by looking and its just sad.
i want a game where people dont know what my class is untill they either ask me for my build or find out through combat for them selves. im sick and tired of having a pre-devolped armour set for my class as i level up through the game, i hate having quests that make me choose only one item which is specific to my charecters class and skill set.. i think its boreing and dull.
its the same for items and weapons.
you choose tank as your class in a game and then everything you wear and use has to have toughness stats str stats and armour stats. and your appearance in game to every one else is so linear. people know your role just by the kind of armour you wear and weapons you wield.
i think its about time this level of tediousness was removed from the games and the element of secrecy was brought back so players can remain mysterious and unique.
i want it where when you group with some one its possible to make people go" WOW!! what was that you just did." or "OMG!! your so tough!! how can you do that?" or even "ummm!! what was that thing you just threw"
games dont have this anymore, and it should be reintroduced, im sick of knowing who is who and what is what before i even encounter them.
example -
tanks wear heavy stupid rediculous armour and shields or big silly two handed weapons
mages wear robes and carry staffs of bright and exotic colours
healers are fair and lightly armoured carrying staffs or wands with nice glowy blue lit magics or green
assasins are dark and small petite charecters which yield duel daggers or blades.
fighters are medium armour charecters with two swords.
my point is you can see what is what from the other side of the map and you dont even have to guess!!
its just crap. and its ruining games.

Only name and maybe healthbar visble plus some robe to cover what class you realy are would solve alot.
Or play sandbox game that dont have classes.
Even now these days in Darkfall you can see what most players are melee or magic:(
Whether I want to be able to visually tell what class a player is depends on what type of game it is. If it is a game where I will be looking for strategic and tactical PVP, such as DAOC, then I will want to be able to identify players on the battlefield quickly and based on their appearance. This is part of the tactics and can be very necessary at times in a fight. It's no different than playing chess and having to see that one of your opponent's pieces is a pawn and the other a rook.
Other than that exception, then I am in favor of "appearance gear" like in EQ2 for PVE games.
Only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the superhero games, DCUO, CO, and CoH. You can't tell by looking at all.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
In skill-based games, such obfuscation and camouflage comes naturally, but not only is it a normal part of class-based games, but since the PVP in those games is more of a sport than warfare, it helps all involved - enemies and teammates - when roles are readily identified on the battlefield.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

They're getting back to it. Ultima Online did this quite well through the use of robes. Player Killers would put them on over heavy armor to make you think they were new players before they jumped you.
Luckily, this is one of the few things they are coming back to in MMORPGs thanks to most players realizing that class armor is rather boring. LOTRO did this even better than UO with their costume slots, and now most of the more popular ones being developed have some form or another of a costume slot system.
Now I'd like them to bring back skills instead of levels and classes. I'd also very much like to see more MMORPGs with non-combat crafting.
