Mortal Online Impressions - A Month Later, from FSG

RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

Full Spectrum Gaming has produced a follow-up to their initial impressions on Mortal Online, which can be found here:

http://fullspectrumgaming.com/2011/08/23/a-month-later-mortal-online/

An excerpt from the conclusion:

"Any work in progress whether in beta or released continues to evolve. This evolution is what makes games one of the most desirable forms of entertainment for me. Now I want to close this article with a few comments on why Mortal Online is a piece of work worth looking into. In my opinion the time that I spent playing MO, a little over a month so work with me, has allowed me to grow as a gamer. We will always run into games that use features from other games and tweak stuff to “improve” gameplay but MO is still growing and that needs to be kept in mind. Not only did it let me experience PvP, crafting, exploring, and making friend it also allowed me to appreciate all of the features that I take for granted in other games. So with that in mind I hope that Star Vault continues to grow and listen to its playerbase. I hope they listen to all of the comments and suggestions made by their community even if something may seem crazy or out of the question. The fact remains that the staff of Mortal Online now have the experience of providing a game to hundreds of people, possibly thousands, across the globe and how many of us can claim that? Star Vault and many of the other “upstarts” across the globe are keeping things fresh, moving along, and mixing up the formula even if it is only a little. Enjoy your time on Mortal Online or drop it, but at least take the opportunity to grow a little in how you perceive the games you play."

    My favorite paragraph..

"Looking up and praying for a change in the future is about the most desired trait for Mortal Online. I do not understand how people can complain, flame, and gripe about something that is apparently still a work in progress. One of the all encompassing things that I learned about my experiences in MO was that patience is needed. The folks behind Mortal Online are providing a framework for their content later on down the road, but no one does any good by constantly saying something is terrible. Sure such and such is broken or something looks funky but that is life. Does everyone else complain when some big muscular guy strolls in with huge ears? Hell no! They do not want to get their faces broken just because maybe that guy was still saving money for plastic surgery. Anyway, just keep an open mind with Mortal Online and try not to set the standards on par with big name companies since it is a work in progress and an interesting one, so far."

Yes the game is buggy as hell.  But you need to look past it at all the potential that it has.  Haven't we heard tthis before??

It's one thing to complain about problems in beta and to harbour the realization that a product in beta is flawed. That's acceptable and is a fundamental part of beta testing. What is unacceptable is for a company to use heavy handed tactics with PAYING CUSTOMERS who had faith a product would be complete. Analogously, if a baker makes a cake to order and delivers it 25% of the way through and yells at the customer that sprinkles are coming, even though there is no flour added yet, is that baker a good one? That's what SV is.

Sure there are some good flavors and if they were baked, mixed and prepared woudl make for a great cake. But they aren't. Even in spite of SV's insistence, you can't hand people ingredients and say, enjoy your cake.

    What?

I'm not really sure what this is trying to say.

I guess some people do not mind paying for a game to be built around thier sub.  I for one will not pay for a game to be made hopefully down the line while I am paying.  And the majority thinks the same.  MO sold around 20k box sales.  And there is 2-3000 subs.  The majority has said the game is shit.  And do not want to pay for it to hopefully be a functioning gmae down the road.

I do not understand why people let game developers slide like this.  You would never let any other business treat you the same.  I was once all awed by potential but my gas tank runs light on that.  I did not understand the dudes analogy about a big guy either.  It would be different if you paid the big guy not to have big ears but he does for some reason.  Yes I am going to pay attention to glaring problems with a game I am playing only a simp would not pay attention to glaring problems with a game and just chalk it up to a "work in progress"..

Imagine if everyone used the "work in progress" excuse during our daily lives. LOL

    He's since stopped playing btw.

I guess Rohn left that part out...   Seems it is worth a look but not staying to see all the "potential" come to life?   I guess that big guy with funny ears kicked his butt.

Well, "impression" tag is pretty much spot on. This is an article on the gameplay and not a review. If it was the later, MO would have come out in a much worse aspect, while in a gameplay review you can skip mentioning up and downsides, sticking to just describing the features and what you've done. Which is pretty much what the guy did.
